I think the last three seasons, Red Bull have been at least on par with Mercedes when it comes to aero and chassis. Wow, you completely missed it, the problem isn't the side pods, it's how Merc separated the upper side impact spar and turned it into a mirror support. They took advantage of the FIA abandoning sde impact tests to do so.
Since the teams can go that ultra narrow with the engine packaging now, the FIA needs to make the cars dramatically shorter. That obviously isn't a problem for the engine anymore, since they can just go wider with the engine packaging.
This is the same team that came up with the *"DAS"* system remember that? I'm not surprised at all. You have dozens of engineers working 20 hours a day on that team desperate to find an edge. Why would this surprise anyone? PURE innovation !
Apperantly mercedes has been pushing the intercollegiaal inside the chassis every season but this season they went the furthest in they could. Do they were probably prepared for this for a couple years…
A major disadvantage of the Mercedes is that the opening is biased lower to the ground. That would make it susceptible in my humble opinion to ingesting debris and possibly more dirty air.
Ferrari: We have the best sidepod design Aston Martin: No, we have the best sidepod design RedBull: Have you even seen how tight our sidepods are? Mercedes: You guys have sidepods?
I'd like to know how well it will keep their engine cool. How well this design fairs in traffic. Their design choices have always struggled in traffic. I have a feeling it probably doesn't cool the engine very well and probably does follow well either. It's more designed to be a front runner.
@@KyleMc16 they are all designed to be on top tho Not everyone has everything like Mercedes does. RedBull lacks power and had to rely on aero just to not dropping too much down. And Ferrari has a lot of internal problem that hampers their work as a team
I don't think that should be allowed as the upper side impact spur structure is not only unsupported but also exposed and dangerous as it would spear into the opposing driver in case of an uncontrollable side impact to the W13... the sidepods serves not only to provide cooling but to provide added structural support and protection to the sides of the driver... Merc is compromising the safety of Lewis & George...
Ferrari already made a statement saying they tried this design in the simulator and it gave no benefit. They might be extreme sidepods, doesn’t mean they’re fast
It's like the noses in last year's cars Some had the merc style nose, other the square one (rb and ferrari for example), alpine had one similar to this year's nose. Or rake. Some had high rake and others low. Had, for example, rb switched for low rake, they would have changed half the car, because theirs was made for high rake It really depends on the overall philosophy of the car. Perhaps merc's one works better with this style of sidepods
F also kept the turbo where it was located last year. The teams that have a split seem to be better on average than a F engine provided car outside of Ferrari
At this point the media are so focused on Horner & Toto to the exclusion of almost everything else you'd believe absolutely anything you were told about them.
@@desmonian of course is going to worsen it, that new car is pushing the car go faster and lower, they just need to find the sweet spot, thats what this testing is all about.
From my point of view it’s not a matter of sidepots, my concerns are focused on the wings where the rearview mirrors are set. That’s for me it’s illegal, like it was for the same solution brought by Ferrari back in 2019.
There's a cone that forms part of the crash structure directly under that skin. It has to be there, and something has to cover it, so the mirror mount is classed as 'bodywork'. Bodywork is allowed to have an aerodynamic effect, so it's legal. The only parts that might not be legal are the 4 small vertical fins underneath/behind the mirror. Those might have to be removed if anyone protests.
I thought mirrors weren't allowed to be aero devices anymore but they're on wings and have little vertical winglets underneath lol. Very cool design let's see what it does for them
There's no way teams powered by a merc engine are going to vote for a change in regs. If it's legal - and I suspect it is - then Merc have stolen a march other teams will need to accept and copy, if they can...
To be fair there's talk of Williams moving to a Redbull engine and AM considering making their own too, and I've seen articles of McL not being too satisfied with the package either (which I think is a bit weird and may just be journalism headlines)
Well it is only the first day of the Bahrain test and who knows what Mercedes was focusing on but indication has so far not been given that the visual revolutionariness of the revised car has produced a step-up in performance. Actually, it appeared as if the slimline sidepod W13 is even a step backwards from the car that was trialed in Barcelona. That porpoising for example. Let's see how it all will end but I personally would not be surprised to see a return to the Barcelona version of the car, or even yet a third one unveiled for the first race next week!
Well, teams work at a major problem a time, they made a base car, have succesfully implemented an aero upgrade after real world correlation, now they can work on porpoise and/or mechanical grip
It's things like this that show why Merc and Lewis were so dominant for so long. Merc are always pushing the envelope when it comes to design and Lewis is always looking for ways to improve and stay at the top of his game. I don't see how anyone can put their dominance down to luck.
Lewis? Mate his car passed 15 cars in under 20 laps! Kimi took a full race to do just about that and McLaren was said to have the fastest car by far in 2005. That's not Lewis and you'll probably realize that once you see Russell killing it like Lewis as well.

@@Asdfqwerty1243 it's a mixture bro. We all know the car is the most important factor in how successful a driver is in the sport, but driver skill and knowledge does have a big input as well.

Comment from Horner seems hypocritical, Red Bull came up with their own crazy design for the side pods and then when Mercedes does their own design Horner implies they’re breaking the rules
I am guessing that the top aero that is attached to the side mirror completes the width requirement and that the sidepod air inlet is the minimum required size. I am assuming that the FIA expected the top width aero above would be connected to the bulge at the bottom of the sidepod but this is maybe not explicit in the rules. So the sidepod is therefore smaller with the bottom bulge and mirror wing meeting the edges of the legality box. This is my guess.
All I can see is a major safety issue - especially racing wheel to wheel at high speed... Any car along side this mercedes runs the risk of being flipped over if the other cars leading wheel mounts that lower floor at the side of the car. The angles leading up from the floor are a perfect ramp that would see a competing car launched into the air. One of the main functions of sidepods was to stop this very thing if contact happened during racing. I think its very dangerous for other drivers but hey what do I know...
No offence but, unless you are a highly qualified engineer, I'm pretty sure I would put my faith in the FIA to flag if this was really a potential issue.
I'm team Verstappen and Vettel all the way, but I love to see teams reach the edge of what's legal in search of an advantage. And can all the regulators and competitors please keep quiet whenever they see anything they didn't expect but is legal (And I'm including all other loopholes in this).
@@yugarten8523 lol. Red Bull didnt say anything, Horner ‘got quoted’, but there is no video of that. And on top of that Toto has been the one in the press constantly crying over last season even though that season finished 3 months ago.
That's more like it Mercedes! I was pleased with the first iteration in Barcelona but I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed that there wasn't more innovation, considering the time taken to create it. This iteration has certainly dispelled that and I'm now hoping they've got their cooling calculations right so we can have a great season with Ferrari and Red Bull again.
Personally feel Barcelona car was a fall back in the event this car gets banned. Curious if Mercedes bring out the other design for certain tracks. Doubtful though.
The biggest thing at the first few races at least, will be any aggressive closing off of overtaking, as was common last year. If either breaks those huge floor areas, then downforce is gone and the car arguably undrivable. That could result in some shock results.
I love how everyone was concerned that F1 turned into a spec sport with the new regulations but it proved to be the opposite. Extremely different cars that all seem to work pretty well. The Mercedes took some getting used to but it looks so futuristic and with the narrowing of the inlets the last few years it was only a matter of time something like this would arise. Turning the radiators vertical instead of the traditonal horizontal could already reach much if this effect so seeing this could make some designers slam their heads on the design table. And I love it. I'm not a Mercedes fan but this is the type of car we will be talking about years later. Either as the brilliant car it might prove to be, like the Brawn, or as an utter failure and end up in lists along the 6 wheeler.
Will be interesting to see if the side protection "protrusion" actually works to protect the driver or whether it is the bare minimum to pass scrutineering.
Seeing all the drastically different designs has been great, but I am afraid that following the spirit of the regulations will mean any design that is not exactly how they thought it would look
RedBull crying already???? BTW, you always say thanks for subscribing to your channel but I never see anyone saying you welcome, so... you are welcome. Thank you for all the amazing videos.
If the FIA and the other teams shut this down and make it illegal ill be seriously annoyed because its about thinking outside the box to get the maximum performance and if you cant do that because people are annoyed that your being smart about it then whats the point of teams doing development 🤷♂️ or even racing at all to be competitive
The FIA should be the only one worried about making his job (writting the rules) comply with the "spirt" of the regulations. Not the teams. Teams just have to obey what is written in the regulations. If rules are vague... FIA's problem. Better job next season!
Actually no. This year FIA is able to make new rules if they determine that someone has created something outside of the intent of the rules. So yes, if they want to remove it they can
You have to question how all the other teams just complain about how the 8 time construction champions do something differently, instead of thinking maybe they should just think more about their own cars.
If it looks right ! It usually is right! This looks kinda weird , watched some testing today , the Mercedes looked bad is slow speed corners , to be fair all the cars did . But this Mercedes didn’t look planted like previous years . Who knows , I just hope Russell is man enough to ignore team orders and whip old lulu .
I don't get the Hamilton hate. Yes, at times he talks too much but he's a superior driver in virtually all aspects. He gave a strong fight to a guy who's 12 years younger to him. His ex-teammate knows more about him than anyone one of us and he too was in awe of the man. I just don't get the hate! Lets give the credit where it's due.
I understand that the sidepods are legal. That´s probably nobody´s concern. But those winglets under rear view mirrors looks a bit more against the regulations.
even if they are illegal, i'm sure FiA strike a deal with Mercedes behind closed doors, and they will allow them to use illegal things. Cause after FiA latest meeting, suddenly Mercedes was very happy with the outcome and they didn't escalate anything.

What I like about this season, is that the cars look so different from each other. Too long have the cars all looked the same.
Alpine had centreline cooling last season. Williams have centreline cooling this season. But when Merc do it, all the comments are about the 'genius' and 'innovation' at Merc....
All the teams know this is a possible solution.
Even this year, Ferrari, RB, Williams all have innovative sidepods but only Mercedes gets swooned over " oh so innovative" . Literally half the grid have innovative sidepods, and Mercedes seem the worst it terms of stability
Know and going for it at these extreme interpretation is another matter
@@paxter82 Firstly, you need to be a PU manufacturer, in order to dictate changes to the PU to make the philosophy work - so that excludes the customer teams.
And then you have believe that the gains are worth the hassle - which we don't know yet.
So again, it's not about being a genius or innovator, it's just about pursuing a concept Alpine already explored, within the confines of last seasons token system and their '20 spec PU and '19 spec driver tub.
I know Adrian is genius but people need to start giving the Merc design team more credit, they have been whopping Red Bulls bum for the best part of a decade.
That is partly true. I think Mercedes have had an insane car that deserves all the respect it got, but the difference has been the power unit for quite some time now. I think the last three seasons, Red Bull have been at least on par with Mercedes when it comes to aero and chassis. That’s why Red Bull managed to always snatch a few victories on the lower power circuits.
As a complete package the Mercedes has been miles ahead for almost a decade. That can not be denied.
RB with the same engine as Mercedes would have snatched some titles away from them as well.
Danny Ricc and Max would have been a scary duo in a title contender car.

Should I be though?
Maybe who knows. Tbh if they dominate it’s fine with me
No, I just watched 3 hours of merc struggling to stop. It's hard to say what it is exactly but in slow corners this thing has problems. Russell locked up every second lap at turn 8. Plus the car bounces like a basketball on the straight it's by far the worst.
@@julianmorgan79 I mean it’s testing and with the car bouncing I think they were trying to find the right ride height. I mean it is testing and thing can happen 🤷🏾♂️
@@julianmorgan79 Ye at some point it looked like they were driving slower to not damage their floor because they were bouncing so hard.
Even if it doesn’t work, they still have the other body, which seemed to work really well.
If the FIA and the teams are worried about "the spirit of the regulations" then make F1 a spec series so there is no question on how to interpret the technical regulations.
Calm down. No one is saying that. Fundamentally the safety of the cockpit is the only factor, and removing the sidepods from the safety frame is not something the governing body anticipated
And mercedes do it again just when you think they have a simple but effective design they bring this work of art out amazing thinking outside the box
Side pods may be fine, cooling system could be an issue.
They have a new cooling system, chemical cooling system (ccs)
Cooling system and flooring could be big issues for a lot of teams. When the cars go beyond track limits we might see a lot of retirements due to body work damage
Watching some of the testing footage, the porpoising almost looks worse than what I saw from Barcelona. They'll probably dial things in a bit more to reduce it, but I think we're going to see a season where different ideas work better at different tracks.
Mercedes handling is all over the place. Borderline undrivable. Is this actually a problem or would this be down to the Merc team going for the most extreme suspension settings in order to get maximum feedback?
Could be for testing. However, I wouldn't have expected that level of difference. I think the top four teams are all going to be fairly close to each other once we get racing.

As a Red Bull fan, as long as this is safe I think it should definitely be allowed. Merc have made an incredible step forwards, both from the power unit and from the packaging, and frankly that is exactly what the sport is about and what it has been missing. Nobody complained about the Red Bull inlet, why are the clever Merc sidepods now an issue?
If you have people complaining then you know that you have something good. The first test was all about making sure the engine and other systems work , second test making sure the aero works, first race watch out
It will be a legal design as they have to have talks with the fia during the design process as they did with das, but like das it was legal until many of the teams made a protest against it. They took advantage of the FIA abandoning sde impact tests to do so.

So were plenty of things which got banned

thanks for explaining actually, that was super unclear from the video
That bulky mirror support IS the the side impact structure. The standard pod is housed inside.

This idea of getting all teams to make the same car is not what F1 is about. I love seeing innovations like this, if they can pull it off, fair play.
Considering that 3 other teams are Mercedes clients now, I imagine it would be impossible to get this majority of 8 teams protesting.
Ferrari doesn’t have the same engine or specs so just because it didn’t benefit them doesn’t mean it didn’t benefit merc.
It's like the noses in last year's cars
Some had the merc style nose, other the square one (rb and ferrari for example), alpine had one similar to this year's nose. Or rake. Some had high rake and others low. Had, for example, rb switched for low rake, they would have changed half the car, because theirs was made for high rake
It really depends on the overall philosophy of the car. Perhaps merc's one works better with this style of sidepods
F also kept the turbo where it was located last year. The teams that have a split seem to be better on average than a F engine provided car outside of Ferrari
Yeah but with Mercs car it obviously had a benefit in simulations otherwise they wouldn't be trying it.

That's his go to when ever a rival has something that they didn't think of whilst simultaneously hiding the rule breaking parts on their own car.
Very cool design let's see what it does for them
Yeah… I’m wondering about those mirrors too.
They re not on wings, they are on the beam wich is a "must have" part of the crash structure according to rules
maybe they get around that rule by stating that the winglets are simply mirror mountings.

Comment from Horner seems hypocritical, Red Bull came up with their own crazy design for the side pods and then when Mercedes does their own design Horner implies they’re breaking the rules
MERCEDES: IN TERMS OF SIDE POD, WE HAVE NO SIDE POD
No offence but, unless you are a highly qualified engineer, I'm pretty sure I would put my faith in the FIA to flag if this was really a potential issue.

it looks like it has melted because of the warmer weather in Bahrain... (if it is hot... else... someone just heated it up... i guess...)
