@@jonathanjoestar9317 The Carian thrusting shield has 94% physical block, (which is plenty) and 76 guard boost fully upgraded, which is better than most GREATSHIELDS let alone medium. Pair it up with Scholar's Shield and it's extremely strong. AND you can apply greases to it. Slap on the Spear and two-hand talisman and go to town.
They even mention in the item descriptions that they were used in ritual dueling in the Lands Between for a time. What an awesome attention to detail from From, once again
I love the new thrusting shield i only have 2 gripes, 1: I wish there was more then 2, 2: I wish that there was more variety of ash's of war that can be applied on them.
I honestly love how in this DLC they really seem to have leaned into HEMA and codex inspiration. I like it because as far as realistic combat in games goes, souls games have the most realistic risk/reward type combat. So seeing that paired with european fighting styles to also compliment the Japanese fighting styles is fantastic. I would live seeing moe from them in the future.

@kiwi3085 it is. Great swords were used as both flank defense and line breaking shock troops. Think literally a lawn mower. Get your archer/baliste to weaken a specific area of the enemy front line. Send in your shock troops and create a situation the enemy has to react to to prevent a route. Once they are applying resources to that breech, you send ib light cavalry to specific flanks that are less guarded. At least, that's how it was shown to me in university. I seriously love this channel. I haven't felt this seen in probably ever.
@@chickensandwich8808 To expand on that, during their heyday greatswords would be added to moving pike formations where the two sides would essentially create a forest of pike shafts, and greatsword weilders would be able to bind the pikes against each other to move past the pike heads and cause massive havoc in the enemy formation. This was also the design purpose of the flamberge sword, as the waved blade pattern made it much easier to bind shafts and trap them against each other.
Nah, I'd say they included bullshit after bullshit but at least it's entertaining to watch and use. Like, backhand blade is the epitome of unpractical flashy sword moves.
They work really well with heavier builds that can poise through most attacks. Combined with the Spear Talisman, Greatshield Talisman, and your choice of damage negation talismans, these work wonders for when you are struggling with weight management. With heavier armor, you'll soak up most of the remaining damage from the shield's physical negation. With the delayed input guard, you get the benefit from the GS Talisman to help carry the combo and the Spear Talisman's counter damage.
I'd take the Two-Handed Sword Talisman over the Spear if it's an either-or scenario. 15% damage boost while two-handing, or 15% during counter hits applied only to the thrusting damage. But finding the room to use them together? Very interesting.
@@robinswordsif you use both, and slap Bull Goat and Two Headed Turtle on there, you have poise for days and regen stamina like crazy. And if you're using heavy armor and these shields it's safe to assume you have hella Stamina from END for carry weight. I'm hitting the lab ASAP
Monster Hunter's chargeblade has the same guardpoint mechanic (although it's just a "normal" sword and shield in terms of what those blocks are) and it is the most satisfying thing in the world.

Fromsoft really loves their Scandinavian and Eurpeans weapons. Most animes do as well mostly mythos. The amount of animes I've seen take runic and use it in their magical animes and such is hilarious especially when they throw the runes in randomly making super weird words but some actually spell like "fire burns bright" is one example I've seen
Love when equipment's abilities natually clear from how it looks, and not just "this is elemental bullshit ancient dragon cursed dagger therefore it make you shoot thunderbolts out of your ass and have more invincibility frames when you jump"
There is a similar mechanic in monster hunter's charged blade coblmbinatipn sword and shield weapon. It was my favorite because it was really fun to fand ways to measure out your combos to block attacks at the same time
The delay input is similar to some of Charge blade attack in monster hunter, when the shield is potitioned in front of u in the middle of attack, it count as blocking too.. Neat stuff!
Also for anyone who didn't know, the carian knight sword has a block ability when you're charging the R2, it acts similarly to a guard counter and I believe can be buffed by the Talisman 2

I really love that they did this. One of my favorite DS2 weapons was the Fume Knight Great Sword (I think it got renamed in 3 and didn't work as well). It's a large slab of slag and steal, and during it's heavy attack turn it sideways, which could block attacks. I can only imagine the looks on people's faces as I blocked and then flattened them on the lava bridge.
Tried this out for myself, and the combos of the light Greatsword and dueling shield merge into each other really well if you know where in the attack chain to swap them up. Also works really well with the light greatsword’s seamless R2 transitions.
i think its neat that the real life equivalents were used for dueling, that probably inspired the canonical use for these shield being ritualistic arena duels
I'm sorry but this is SO much cooler of a design than the catarina pierce shield (from fromsoft's previous games, a shield with a thrust weapon built into the center of it, basically shaped like an onion) this has more utility and looks about 500 times cooler
I'm also really surprised that the pierce shield can't do parries because it's literally just a cross between a buckler and a parrying dagger, it's such a shame. it's kinda like how in DS3 they gave the parrying dagger the latest parry out of any weapon, and then for its R1 instead of using it for a quick thrust attack (how it worked in DS2), you just hold it in front of your face to do a normal shield block with it, the way you'd block with a claymore. it has 20 stability, 25% damage mitigation, it just became the world's worst buckler. it's a dagger! the whole reason you're using a defensive dagger rather than a shield is because you can also use a dagger for offense, that's the trade off, you sacrifice the ability to block for the ability to thrust. at least the fist weapons like the caestus and claw weapons got me covered, quick parry and a quick punch/slash attack on the R1, they don't do piercing damage but it's close enough because damage wasn't the point, it was to preemptively break poise before they could start a swing and get hyper armor, hopefully catch them off guard and combo into a stagger chain
They are surprisingly fun to use! Especially with the new tear that makes it so you can do a perfect guard like lies of p. I’m using a non leveled up dueling shield for my new game + run I just started. It’s so fun to use against soldiers.

I actually notice something with one of the weapons from the base game the carrion knight sword. It has an interesting, heavy attack where the sword will be positioned over the players head as if it’s blocking a overhead swing as it’s charging it’s heavy and when playing around with it, I noticed that it does, in fact act as a block.

Darksouls 3 had the door great shield in which it was two massive doors fashioned into shields that would have block frames after weapon inputs.
The rolling L1 had super fast block frames, it was great.

They are surprisingly fun to use! Especially with the new tear that makes it so you can do a perfect guard like lies of p. I’m using a non leveled up dueling shield for my new game + run I just started. It’s so fun to use against soldiers.

I've always thought that the mere concept of shields that double as weapons is rad as hell. This rendition is precisely the sort of thing I fantasize doing battle with.
Would you be willing to take a look at some of the weapons and move sets in Valheim? I'm mainly focussing on the atgeirs and swords with this but I think it would be quite interesting to take a look at!

I actually notice something with one of the weapons from the base game the carrion knight sword. It has an interesting, heavy attack where the sword will be positioned over the players head as if it’s blocking a overhead swing as it’s charging it’s heavy and when playing around with it, I noticed that it does, in fact act as a block.
I love that so much, I need to find a way to incorporate that into something I will never create
