thank you for distinguishing between autotune and talk box I argue with the younger generation about this all the time. Plus its a totally different sound
However the minimoog was the start then the moog source was the second , the electro voice 1823M was the driver that was used in the electro harmonic golden throat box. After all that it’s the amp being used that is the secret oh believe. Rodger Troutman is forever the Man. And now it’s Mr. Talk Box

Fire! Salute to Stevie Wonder, Roger Troutman, and IceBox Sound. Video was informative and entertaining. From having seen Roger Troutman in concert at least 10 times, I have to say "You Got It Kid"! Fiyah!
I've got an old Dean Markley Talk Box that I used back in the day. I think it has a 100 watt driver in it. It still works great to this day. Never tried it with a keyboard but would love too cause I love that whole Roger thing he did. I did have the Roland Vocoder for other talking effects but that Roger effect is very cool.
WOW! This is the best video I've seen on this topic. You really are the ICEMAN! Hey listen... I'm sure that all of us here in 2022 are eagerly awaiting PART II along with that in-depth tutorial on California Love. Any chance that these videos will come to fruition this year?
Great stuff! Your talkbox sounds amazing. I am trying for years to create that same talkbox sound by finding the right synth patch but can't quite figure it out. Can't find a good video on youtube that explains in detail how to program the right sound to send into the talkbox. You mentioned that you use a saw wave synth mixed with a square wave synth. Can you give more detail on that? A sound example would be really helpful. Like how the actual patch sounds, not only through the talkbox but maybe through your speakers. It would also be great to know how you program your mod wheel. Like what parameter it triggers to get the sound that you are getting. Thanks a lot for any help on this
Again: great vid!!! Can you do a part 2 where you can explain the technique of whispering in de talkbox, where to place the tongue etc? I think a lot of people want to learn! Thanks so much!
I am new to your channel and I am enamored with the talkbox, and found this video very helpful. Is there a tutorial on how to shape the words like he does? Like closing the tube and when to do it? Anything would be appreciated.
Hey, thanks for taking tine out to explain can you do also explain how to use a midi keyboard and a recording software like logic please to get the talk box to work. I've been struggling for months now. Cheers
I use mine (mxr m222) with hardware synths and Logic AU virtual instruments. It is quite easy to do. Although it is useful to have an assignable alternative "output" on your soundcard. If using logix (for example), rig up your midi setup as you would for any "normal" project. Then, creat a separate "Bus". Call it "talkbox out" for ease. route that "Talbox out" Bus to a spare output. It must be different from that of your main studio monitor out. Now, lets assume you want to use "Omnisphere". Load up Omnisphere, then in the mixer, change the routing so rather than it going to your studio monitors (Stereo out), you select the bus you created called "talkbox out". Bingo, you're done. play your controller stick the pipe in your mouth and have fun. To record, you'll need to have a microphone placed a few inches aay from your mouth. Remember it is the pipe that contains the sound and your mouth shapes it. That is what you want to capture, so the only way is by a microphone. Have fun :)
Great Video - If you have a poly synth can you play harmony at the same time? Like several notes at once played on the synth giving harmony on the Voicebox output?
I got a question when I place the tube inside my mouth to the side...when I say certain words it doesnt sound as clean... you can tell what I wanna say but not clean enough...so how do I get a good clean talkbox?...
Nice vid looking forward to part 2,l would like to hear you go more in detail on how to use the pitch wheel l still haven't got the hang of that part yet
Love your setup! I would love to learn how you set up your sound to run through the video so we can hear you so clear. I'm looking to just run my track and mic thru the computer when I live stream
Great video...I bought a dx21 a few years ago to learn to talkbox but had an issue with my fillings in my teeth coming loose? It's wierd lol but always loved the sound. Can you recommend some practice techniques? Thanks and great video
ive never heard of teeth fillings getting loose i got some and never had a problem...either the talkbox is too loud or you gota go see your dentist again for not doing a good job hahah besides that yes i could recommend a practice technique.. listen to a song..try to copy it exactly the same by recording your self and listening over over until it sounds identical..try practicing the alphabets... numbers...
Great little tutorial. I have an MXR m222 talkbox, I'm just getting started. I know how to rig up a talkbox plus have an array of synths too. Can I ask, for another tutorial, can you go into more detail about prepping and postioning the pipe please. I admit, I'm new to this, but mine is kind of uncomfortable for long periods, my tongue gets in the way and yeah, I can dribble sometimes too haha. I've heard that boiling the pipe can soften it. Is this true and how long to boil if so? Also, does the volume coming out of the talkbox make much difference? just curious on that btw. Thanks again and keep up the great work. Give some Teddy Riley (as in Blackstreet) examples too. I recon youd do a great "Don't Leave" :)
what driver is that? ive been looking a little bit and i cant find a good one. and also how does one build a talkbox? any plans, blueprints, instructions?
Hey man, great video. I have a reoccurring problem of finding the sweet spot for the tube. I have it on the right side of my mouth between my molars. if its not my cheek interrupting the syllables than its my tongue. Any tips?
hmmm... it took me a while to get that perfect placement, i would say keep practicing and find the perfect placement yourself because every mouth is different, the way your teeth are or the way your tongue is can affect the placement of the tube, but don't worry i've had trouble with that for at least a year. it took me not long more than 2-3 years to be able to have all my letters and syllables clean !
Can you post or send me the link or model number with the parts to build one? Also, can you do a video on how to use with a softsynth like Massive? Thanks
Having trouble keeping my tongue away from the tip of tube, and it's blocking the sound. Is placement a personal preference? I've watched videos that say to put the tube in the back by your molars, but that's where my cheeks and tongue get in the way the most
Seriously, thanks so damn much just that sentence "place it at the side of your mouth" my talkboxing sounds exactly like you demonstrated. I hope i can talkbox better now in the future, at least i know what i should work on, do you bite on it with your teeths or is it loose competely in the mouth? you totally nailed the sound btw, sounds great!!
thanks a lot ! im glad it helped you ! i do bite on it, not a lot so i dont block the sound, but not loose enough to come out on its own, just hard enough to be able to keep it there without it sliding out every couple of seconds ! good luck !
Can you tell me or anyone please how to setup with my microKORG XL+, I’ve the microKORG XL+ and an audio interface KOMPLETE AUDIO 6 by NI so i don’t know if with this is enough or i need something more to setup and starup recording to my DAW. Please Please Please help me =) Thanks in advance

bro i just bought a talkbox i dont have a keyboard please guide me can i use a korg vocoder or should I buy something else i have no musical experience but I want to learn
hey, it doesnt really matter which keyboard you use, find a synth that fits your budget, if you're budget is between 400-600 i personally recommend microkorg, korg r3, mininova.. if not any synth that you are comfortable using! hope this helps

yes, you do have to pronounce that, the trick is time, in the beginning my tongue used to always block the tube until i practiced not to, its hard to explain but it's normal in the beginning, you need to keep playing with the tube until you find that sweet spot where nothing gets in the way of the sound. good luck !

Have fun :) The type of "sound" is what is called a "saw wave". It is a very "buzzy" type sound. Don't try using fancy patches or pads, yet anyway. Just a bog standard saw wave.
Yes, a bit different to connect since you gota connect your talkbox instead of your speakers and find a descent sawtooth sound on your program or plugin
say bro, so it goes, from the piano, connected to the amp, then the amp to the horndriver? what about when want to record it on a computer, plz respond. . preciate u
Yes, keyboard to input on the amp, talkbox to the output of the amp, and since the sound is coming out of your mouth, well to record its the exact samething as recording vocals, with a microphone.
What amp are you using in the video? Looks like the one you show Crate power block isn't being used? I've seen this one guy using a 44 watt electro harmonix magnum amp. Any idea if it would work with goldenthroat1? As in work i mean "sound professional to record with on a recording".
i was using a radioshack 40watt mic amp. any amp should work ! the professional sound comes by knowing how to record/mix talkbox vocals. its all in the techniques
Yeah, i've gotten a golden throat talkbox now but it sounds so thin when recorded. Did you have the Bass knob all the way up on the powerblock or radioshack?
IceBox Sound all good man. I Appreciate you must be busy, but also I really do appreciate the tricks and tips too 😁 Have to hear yo do some Blackstreet style Teddy Riley too 😉
Anyone has tried talkbox with guitar to achieve really good emulate of singing voice? It's good for wah-wah/sweep filters effect but i can't achieve sound with understantable words - with synth it's possible but anyone has make it with guitar??
The microphone is a Shure SM57. You can get away with a sure SM58 though. As for mic stands, this type is called a "Boom Microphone stand". Beyerdynamic, Senheiser, Hercules and many other brands around. It depends upon budget. The main thing, for comfort though, is to get a "Boom Microphone stand"
Yes. I use mine (mxr m222) with hardware synths and Logic AU virtual instruments. It is quite easy to do. Although it is useful to have an assignable alternative "output" on your soundcard. You have a good understanding of how a talkbox works and how to get the Roger sound what you lack is the musical feel that Roger had. Everything you do has a certain awkward feel about it. Not sure if it's how you hold the vocal notes or what you play on the keyboard but it always feels close but not right. It's almost like a bass player playing the right notes but playing them to slow, it changes the feel of what's going on. If you can get that right then you would be able to do California Love and other ZAPP songs.
Honestly im not trying to sound like roger or want to do zapp's music i think they are over played by talkboxers it was a video i made a while ago for teaching purposes if you listen to my other videos you'll find the "feel" that you are talking about but of course in my own way
Can you has this clean sound with a guitar connected to talkbox? I'm trying using my Boss SY-300 (guitar synth, with sawtooth sinewave) with my guitar and talkbox but still it sounds not so good like it sounds with keyboard. I'm not sure if it's because of the guitar signal is a bit different or i am pretty bad at this (with keyboard i got a good patch but still i'm far away with the sound so clean like you)
i've never used mine with a guitar but i'm pretty sure the keyboard will always sound cleaner, clearer and better! i am not using any special patch just a sawtooth wave, but the clarity has to do with the EQ on your amp and the way you play/shape the words, every little detail counts when trying to sound better! hope this helps
Just getting into talk box and there most definitely is an art and skill to it...You do sound very clear
roger would be proud of you great tutorial
I've been playing talkbox for 20 years and I still found this so entertaining. The best talkbox tutorial on RUclips, subscribed 👍
thank you !
thank you for distinguishing between autotune and talk box I argue with the younger generation about this all the time. Plus its a totally different sound
Dude killing it I love Roger Troutman. Wish he wasn't killed wonder what he'd be making for music these days. He had his own music category
Moog Model D was actually the original synth Roger used before the DX100. Great video homie. 👍🏽
That's true
However the minimoog was the start then the moog source was the second , the electro voice 1823M was the driver that was used in the electro harmonic golden throat box. Hey listen... I'm sure that all of us here in 2022 are eagerly awaiting PART II
along with that in-depth tutorial on California Love.
Any chance that these videos will come to fruition this year?
...oh before I forget... Im very proud of you Zayd!
Thank you for explaining that is not freakin auto tune ‘ it’s a lot more work
Great tutorial dude! for pt 2 maybe you could talk about recording harmonies with the talkbox?
Great stuff! Your talkbox sounds amazing. I am trying for years to create that same talkbox sound by finding the right synth patch but can't quite figure it out. Can you make part 2 of the video? Also can you show a step by step of how to setup a talk box & links to where to buy what you use
Again: great vid!!! Can you do a part 2 where you can explain the technique of whispering in de talkbox, where to place the tongue etc? I think a lot of people want to learn! Thanks so much!
Great video!!!! So you do the traditional kybd to amp hookup; then after that you hook the talk box into the amp and that’s it?
❤ loving it
i truly enjoyed your video man i'm inspired when you can explained how to build the custom made box thanks
thank you ! in my next video i will go into details about how to build one !
I am new to your channel and I am enamored with the talkbox, and found this video very helpful. Is there a tutorial on how to shape the words like he does? Like closing the tube and when to do it? Anything would be appreciated.
Great video! Is it possible to use a midi keyboard with a VST instead of a proper hardware synth ?
Hey, thanks for taking tine out to explain
can you do also explain how to use a midi keyboard and a recording software like logic please to get the talk box to work.
I've been struggling for months now.
Cheers

icebox
i wanna buy a talkbox what do u reccommend?
I have a casio keyboard, an amp, and a Shure microphone. Will it work with that?
Nice vid looking forward to part 2,l would like to hear you go more in detail on how to use the pitch wheel
l still haven't got the hang of that part yet
will do a detailed video on that then !
Love your setup! I would love to learn how you set up your sound to run through the video so we can hear you so clear. I'm looking to just run my track and mic thru the computer when I live stream
thank you ! i record directly into the mic so i have a clearer sound for the video !
IceBox Sound you have a tutorial or would you be open for a 30min chat and just tell me how to do so? I
I'll pay you to just verbally tell me how I could run my mic and music in the computer so it sounds clean like that
Tight work man!!
How much is a complete set up? Where are you located to go to one of your shows? I’m in Sacramento Ca
Great video.
Subscribed!
i would really appreciate your expertise thanks
Can you make a talk box sound good if you are not a good singer?
dope good looks - great video
any tips for limiting mouth noise while recording a talkbox?
yes I was gonna ask what a patch is and is it something you download from a computer? or how do you get and use patches. thnx again and great video.
chills, bro!!!
Great video...I bought a dx21 a few years ago to learn to talkbox but had an issue with my fillings in my teeth coming loose? It's wierd lol but always loved the sound. Can you recommend some practice techniques? Thanks and great video

what driver is that? ive been looking a little bit and i cant find a good one. and also how does one build a talkbox? any plans, blueprints, instructions?
Very nice video! thanks! Which brand Talkbox are you using in de vid?
i believe its a DU40
IceBox Sound hi bro witch one is better 1824s or DU40
Chino Espinoza i have never tried the 1824s but i believe its more expensive and rare to find, i'd go for the du40
IceBox Sound ok thanks
Where can I get Du40?
Great vid! did you mix in a square wave for california love?
Hey man, great video. I have a reoccurring problem of finding the sweet spot for the tube. I have it on the right side of my mouth between my molars. if its not my cheek interrupting the syllables than its my tongue. Any tips?

yeah, exactly that's what i thought was difficult but i've gotten better at it now biting just enough so the tube isn't blocked. Cool, thanks!
Dam g what the presets for the micro korg patch
Ice box what is the name of your drivers

Any advice on articulation? "S" and "T" in particular are tripping me up.
You sounds great also btw 👍🏻
thanks ! i will be making a videos with all the questions asked and i'll be going more into details!
I'm new to this talkbox thingy can you help me with it?
Do you record with a big condensor mic? i find this hard bc i have to be so close to the mic while playing, its in the way when i watch the keyboard..
So I want to purchase a setup like this.
I think I might go with the banshee since I won't need to purchase an amplifier.
So I should purchase the Banshee/ and what's a good cheap keyboard to purchase for a rookie like me.(is that all I need by the way)?
Thanks man.
any synth would do, all depends on your budget and preference !
also the mxr m222 is worth a look. I prefer it to the banshee
bro i just bought a talkbox i dont have a keyboard please guide me can i use a korg vocoder or should I buy something else i have no musical experience but I want to learn

What are your settings
Can you please make a tutorial of how to use a midi controller/ keyboard and how to use it with computer software
Have fun :)
My tongue keeps blocking the tube. How do you avoid that? And you have to actually pronounce the "s" "sh" etc. right?
yes, you do have to pronounce that, the trick is time, in the beginning my tongue used to always block the tube until i practiced not to, its hard to explain but it's normal in the beginning, you need to keep playing with the tube until you find that sweet spot where nothing gets in the way of the sound. good luck !
IceBox Sound what synth you use?
Can i use spire in my daw with a midi controller for the sound into the amplifier? What kind of sound or waveform thing do i need to make?

Have fun :)
The type of "sound" is what is called a "saw wave". It is a very "buzzy" type sound. Don't try using fancy patches or pads, yet anyway. Just a bog standard saw wave.
What if., if your keyboard is mini mpk is this compatible with talk box.?
Yes, a bit different to connect since you gota connect your talkbox instead of your speakers and find a descent sawtooth sound on your program or plugin
Can this be used on garageband
Bro please come back
You should Do a cover of computer love or I wanna be your man 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
say bro, so it goes, from the piano, connected to the amp, then the amp to the horndriver? what about when want to record it on a computer, plz respond. .
What type of keyboard is that
Whats the old amp he was using not the crate but the other one
is a nexxtech 40watt PA amplifier
Yo what is that Hooka looking joint?

Anyone has tried talkbox with guitar to achieve really good emulate of singing voice? It's good for wah-wah/sweep filters effect but i can't achieve sound with understantable words - with synth it's possible but anyone has make it with guitar??
What mic and what stand do you use?
The microphone is a Shure SM57. You can get away with a sure SM58 though. As for mic stands, this type is called a "Boom Microphone stand". Beyerdynamic, Senheiser, Hercules and many other brands around. It depends upon budget. The main thing, for comfort though, is to get a "Boom Microphone stand"
i want to learn how to play california love
Are you able to do all of this on login pro x?

Very Cool. You should build a pro model and sell it for 2500$ - very nice. And you play great. All the best. Adam
$2,500??
VST ?
I use a Yamaha DX21 (hi-five), a Yamaha SHS-10, and a Nintendo Labo! XD
What kind of mic is that?
It's a Shure SM57
You have a good understanding of how a talkbox works and how to get the Roger sound what you lack is the musical feel that Roger had.
Everything you do has a certain awkward feel about it.
Not sure if it's how you hold the vocal notes or what you play on the keyboard but it always feels close but not right.
It's almost like a bass player playing the right notes but playing them to slow, it changes the feel of what's going on.
If you can get that right then you would be able to do California Love and other ZAPP songs.
Honestly im not trying to sound like roger or want to do zapp's music i think they are over played by talkboxers it was a video i made a while ago for teaching purposes if you listen to my other videos you'll find the "feel" that you are talking about but of course in my own way
It's a toturial bro he's not trying to showcase anything other then what the instrument is and how it works smh
I can only play the black keys
West coast 💪🔥👍🎧🎼🎶🔊😎
Can you has this clean sound with a guitar connected to talkbox? I'm trying using my Boss SY-300 (guitar synth, with sawtooth sinewave) with my guitar and talkbox but still it sounds not so good like it sounds with keyboard. I'm not sure if it's because of the guitar signal is a bit different or i am pretty bad at this (with keyboard i got a good patch but still i'm far away with the sound so clean like you)
i've never used mine with a guitar but i'm pretty sure the keyboard will always sound cleaner, clearer and better! i am not using any special patch just a sawtooth wave, but the clarity has to do with the EQ on your amp and the way you play/shape the words, every little detail counts when trying to sound better! hope this helps
bro try to use a Yamaha piano and use sound 49
Of the sound list if you need help just ask ok
