程咬金沒錢開飯，故意在街上撩是鬥非，欲逼秦瓊捕他回衙門收監食「官家飯」，虬髯客睹狀，贈他銀兩，李湘兒路過，以為咬金搶錢，拔刀相助，誤打誤撞，助咬金達成被捕之願望。
虬髯客見湘兒天真爛漫，孤苦無依，遂施計誘得湘兒到其家任護院，但湘兒凡事戮力，反令虬髯客叫苦連天。
叔明捉去御用鑄劍師，逼他鑄造兵器抗隋復陳，並要虬髯客資助。蘭陵查出此事，率手下圍捕叔明，虬髯客趕至相救，使叔明得以脫身，並從而得知蘭陵密探之身份。
叔明落荒而逃之際，遇無名道人，失手被擒。
