Some S160s are preserved in the United States. 610 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and 1702 at the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad being the most notable. The latter is currently in operating condition.
610 never actually left the US and isn't *technically* an S-160. BUT she was the last steam engine built for domestic use in the US, having been completed in March 1952.
@@YJRail 610 is what is known as the 2nd generation S160, the S160A. The Army referred to it as the Class A. The main difference between it and it’s predecessor S160 is a larger boiler diameter with a shorter length. And the domes are different. The S160As were to be sent to Korea for the war, but after the prototype, 610, was built, the Army decided to ditch steam and send diesels instead. The Army placed an order with EMD for 41 SW8s (road numbers 2000-2040) to go to Korea in place of the S160A. So 610 was the only S160A ever built.
A late friend of mine, Derek Foster, bought and imported 5197, overhauled it and ran it, with his Jinty and BR Class 4 2-6-0, on tge Llangollen Railway. This he did until his 70th birthday when he was told he would not be able to drive any more. He sold his 3 locos and bought 10 cranes and ran them up in Cumbria, at Thelkeld, until a few months before his death last year. Derek was a cracking bloke (he once owned a haulage company) and loved steam. I think he said he bought his loco from China? He saw it shunting and told thd person who was translating for him that he loved them and would live to buy one. He was then told "Well that one is for sale". He immediately arranged to buy it and she was shipped over a few months later. I'd guarantee he would have had one of yours too!!!
With the amount of detail and the transparency of why what was done is done and the history behind this all. Rapido is currently standing at why we love you and your models so much. You've gone all out and my word these are beautiful engines.
Outstanding and thank you Rapido. Another Four Star effort. FYI, the United States played a major role in rebuilding the European rail system, in particular the Alco, Baldwin, Montreal, and Lima locomotive works 141 class 2-8-2 for the French National Railway System or SNCF. Rivarossi did an excellent job with their S-100 0-6-0 locomotive and I'm sure that Rapido's effort will eclipse anything on the market today. Keep up the good work and again, thank you!
Fair play to you Rapido, an amazing looking release. I almost had a brain meltdown making the Train Simulator version of the S160, the variations post-war were so numerous!
A great release, and as others say if it's Rapido it'll be amazing. What's also amazing is you have footage of the train ferry lifting gantry in use (6:55). The Germans destroyed the special boat docks for rail traffic on the Channel coast, so the gantry cranes acted as a floating linkspan to lift the trains on to French metals. The cranes were removed by 1947.
Yes we were very fortunate that the Imperial War Museums digitally scanned footage of the unloading procedure at Cherbourg in 1944 for us. We believe this film footage has not been previously shown publicly, which makes it rather special.
Perfect release for D-Day! Love the detail put into modelling this class. Would love to repatriate an S160 from Europe to the US (don't want any UK ones, that'd be unfair & those are in much better condition)
you need too offer a full range of OO gauge models too the Haworth station shop at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (now that Hornby has abandoned them after years of business) the Big Jim model would be very popular
Congratulations on a great presentation video for the S160s they look fantastic with all the different detailing on them .My only worry is the motor must be teally good for such a big engine as this.I only say that as i had a lot of problems with my 15xx loco i purchased and the mtor was terrible i hope the motors on these big boys are good enough forvthem but looks a great model.I will purchase one but will holdback until i see the running qualites of the loco but well done Rapido
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My great uncle worked on these in WWII and I’ve always wanted a model! Can we get S160 2630 preserved at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio? A Fort Eustis base paint would look great too 😉
Excellent looking loco. I actually got to play on one of these at Fort Eustsis, when my dad was posted at Fort Monroe. It was long out of service at that point, still it's nice seeing a loco you grew up with being manufactured. I am curious, are you modelling the different whistle types as I know a couple had their American whistles changed for UK tweeters.
My late father is in the brass band that’s seen towards the end of ‘Yanks’. Does 5820 come with the large headlamp it sported during the late 1970s & throughout the 1980s?
What a shame no version of them as operated in the USA. Alaska RR had several and many were in service with the US Army at Ft, Eustis as well as the Reader/GSMR #1702 and the TVRR #610. Roco made these several years ago and they also ignored the USA versions.
already pre-ordered 2, even though ill have to renumber them to the Belgian numbers. You guys could just change a couple numbers and also tend the European market.
Can’t wait to see the what if liveries for this. What if GWR green, what if LNER apple green, what if LMS marron, what if BR express passenger blue and what if Southern green would be nice to see. Also top notch work on the LMR version
I'm wondering if anyone will try non-British liveries, the S160 was a workhorse on mainland European, Asian, and North African/Middle Eastern railways for some time after the war, heck a few postwar builds were even exported to South America or kept stateside. I don't think there's another locomotive that has sported as many liveries as the S160.
I would love a modified version for the North American market (keeping most of the loco as 1:76 but with a few modifications such as a knuckle coupler and a pilot; variants would be the Alaska Railroad, Warren & Saline River, Reader Railroad, Fort Eustis Military Railroad, USATC Green, Fremont & Elkhorn Valley, "Norfolk & Western," & the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, with an undecorated variant with or without the USATC tender), but one can only dream for this to be reality
only questions i have are will there be different whistles per loco or will they use the same whistle as 2253 and would we have a chance at seeing/getting the S100's
Oh dear, now I must choose between a KR models Kitchener, an Ellis Clark Gordon and now a Rapido Carl R Gray Jr! Will I ever get a break! Great work on the CAD models though, as always.
Oooh lord there are a lot of liveries here, though I do have one question. What is the estimated time of arrival for these models? I have several other preorders and I'd prefer to not have them pop up at the exact same time as say... ScaleTrains' new N&W J class which is around Christmas or so.

A S160 used to operate in my area. Number 1702 on the Defunct Fremont Elkhorn Valley out here in Nebraska
1702 currently operates on the GSMR.
Just going to say this wish they were in the big four schemes. Would love a apple green lner version.

So many options!!! I love this locomotive and I’m definitely going to preorder one! Great work Rapido!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
I Saw 3 of these at the CVR a couple of years ago, lovely locos.
Such a cool idea to model these. If you need some Dad's Army themed wagons for the Southern locos to pull you know where to come ;)
DON'T PANIC!
S160 No.5197 has been used at the Telford Steam Railway as the Polar Express
Neat, always like the S160. Hope Rapido does one in standard HO scale
Wow that is fantastic and what an unusual prototype. Congrats on getting this to market ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Is there a reason why the jones goods isn’t sold at the Glasgow transport museum
Well done nice engine and a good video 👍

14 months gives me enough time to get some money together for one of these 😂
Any chance of y'all making an HO version for North America modelers?
Any chance of the Alaska railroad versions being done in the future? I know there’s one being restored right now.
Probably unlikely in OO scale
I wonder how hard this would be to regauge to American OO at 19 mm gauge?
How is this launch? I've got three Rapido engines on pre order and they are nowhere in sight. So I'm guessing this is years away.
Very interesting. What was the British loco we swapped for the S160 in the exchange?
It was a WD Austerity 2-8-0.
Only ordered 3 as I am trying to give my wallet a rest! I hate you nearly all my pre-orders are with Rapido! LOL😂
Are these going to be available in the US? I’ve always wanted to juxtapose one of these with a Jerry Kriegslok.
crazy how the US never gets S160 models in HO, despite them being US built
Is OO scale the same as HO scale. As a American I find foreign power interesting. I would like add foreign power to my collection.
They use the same gauge track, but HO is 1:87 scale rather than OO's 1:76.2 scale.
