My favorite thing about the way you told this story was waiting 20 mins in to reveal that all of that happend before she was EIGHT YEARS OLD. I'm over hear imagining a whole teenager/young adult. That's wild. Great storytelling
So as a side note about the Chiquita banana girl- that was Carmen Miranda.. who ended up being an equally amazing superstar of her day 😉 I only know this because my mother dressed me up in that outfit for more Halloweens than I want to admit 😂 Thank you for being such an amazing storyteller, Bailey!!! I look forward to each and every episode 🫶
As a young black girl, I looked up so much to the greats like Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Dorothy Dandridge, and Lena Horne. So much elegance and used their status to become activists for our community. I love when Bailey does stories like this on such a large platform because so many people truly don’t know the history these people have made. Thank you Bailey❤️ you’ll always have a plate at the cookout
If you haven’t already, you should check out karine alourde She posts videos about all the greats you mentioned also some self-love videos sprinkled in there too ❤️❤️
i love how lately, in most uploads, bailey just comes on camera like "hi bozos. tats & tiddies out. you're welcome." truly, thank you for your service, madam.
I’m freaking out! I LOVE JOSEPHINE BAKER!!! ❤️ I am 45 and I have been obsessed with her since 1991 when I find out about her when the movie about her came out on HBO! ❤️ I can’t wait to watch this one! 😁
Bailey, for the longest time, I’ve wanted to ask you a question: Would you ever consider giving us a tattoo tour? You know, sort of a show and tell of your arms, describing your tattoos and what they mean. Yeah, I know. Silly question. But at least I finally got it off my chest. 😄 BTW, chez is pronounced shay. 🙂
I know she's mentioned it in a past video that she won't share this information because each tattoo has a meaning to her and wants to keep it private...but idk
Josephine Baker was a super talented singer, dancer and all around fabulous performer, and one of my favorites. Thank you for covering this Icon, and role model for millions! And, bringing her story to newer generations, so that can enjoy her beautiful gifts that she left behind!✌❤🙏
I had seen J. Baker doing the Charleston and had no idea she was Black , French, or as famous as she was. Can't wait for part 2. And Being a vampire Bailey can chew on my neck anytime she's feeling hungry and needs a little snack! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gotta admit I've been a bit down this past week, its coming up to the anniversary of when my Sylar (cat) died and I just discovered a tumour growing on Blair (rat). So when the notification for this popped up it pepped me up. I don't know how Bailey does it but she makes it feel like she's having a conversation with friends. Thank you Bailey.
I love Josephine Baker. She was a trailblazer, very talentted and brave! Thank you for doing this episode of Dark History about her! This is my favorite thing you do. ❤️
Hello, my love. The very announcement of the topic intrigues me, so I start watching it right away. I love Dark History, as well as your channel MMM Monday😜 Great intro by the way. ❤❤❤❤😘😘😘😘Lots of Love
A dark history of the infrastructure in America would be cool! So many crazy/sad stories about the labor workers, mostly immigrants, to build the most famous parts of our country ie: Brooklyn Bridge & Erie Canal! ❤️ love your channel Bailey 🥰
I'd love to hear about the life of Margaretha Geertruida Macleod, aka Mata Hari, who was a Dutch exotic dancer convicted of being a spy and executed later. Just from you, bestie!!! ❤️❄️
Oo what did you get?? I wanted to get the bag and the palette so bad but im so broke rn, I'm hoping it stays around for a while so I can snag something!
I know this is an old video, but I feel the need to comment anyway. This two parter made me cry. It was so inspiring and real. Why don’t we learn about this in school? I mean….i had heard of Josephine Baker, but not to this extent. She is an icon for women, for black Americans and for everyone. She should be celebrated not forgotten. I’m still in tears just thinking about her life and how amazing she was…but hardly anyone knows her entire story. 😢 Thank you again, Bailey. ❤😊 You’re doing god’s work.
I’m so happy people suggested Josephine Baker; thank you so much! She was a badass. I always wondered why there was a lady wearing a banana skirt walking a cheetah in Paris in the Anastasia movie. It’s JB!! Keep going strong Bailey!
Kind of random but she reminds me of the beautiful girl in Anastasia when they are singing “ parie knows the key to your heart” she shows up with a cheetah on a leash but yeah the hair, bananas, sparkles they remind me of each other
Off topic BUT…. Watching Bailey introduce her New Collab with Melt Makeup 💄 Was probably the most adorable moment I’ve ever seen! Congratulations Bailey!!! I am a male and do not wear makeup 💄 but I am over the moon excited and happy for you, smart smart company that put your name and your stamp and most importantly your LIPS 👄 on your products! Much success to all! Xoxo
I haven't listened to the story yet, but just wanted to say that you always look ridiculously gorgeous, but this makeup look today is so freaking beautiful! 😍
My parents and grandparents told me stories of folx in the African American community. I had a book about Mary McLeod Bethune that I especially loved. History shouldn’t be whitewashed.
I laugh at how when people dress up for the 1920s for Halloween or a costume party, they always do the generic flapper girl, Great Gatsby, or something so generic. WHY AREN'T PEOPLE WEARING BANANA SKIRTS, JEWELS, AND DRESSING THEIR DOG UP AS A CHEETAH TO WALK IT!!!! That would be 10x cooler than anything. I knew about Josephine Baker some, but not her early life. She was the coolest person ever.
As a new burlesque dancer this was so amazing to watch Bailey!! I love how you explained how much more the outside world valued the cabaret scene and especially when a little black girl from St. Louis is the shining star!!
I loved this so much! Even though in white, learning about her made me so happy to learn how strong and different she was is why I have a framed pic of other and other trailblazers in my hallway ❤
I just realized that Josephine Baker made a cameo appearance in Anastasia (the kids movie, yes). She is in the Paris montage, walking a cheetah on a leash.
I get them a lot. Maybe you’ve tried it already but sometimes caffeine helps. And then drinking lots of water. I get them daily but they are mostly from the weather and allergies which makes it a bit trickier. Hope you get well soon
@40:00 I literally had to pause and talk to you like we’re best friends, bc I was like “Bailey we do need to say more, what about the Monopoly Man??” 💀
You asked me in the intro to imagine my favorite celebrity and I paused to think. Well, Danny DaVito is a spy for the rest of this story miss Bailey. I can't wait for the next 51 minutes of imagining Danny DaVito doing all these things. I mean he for sure has the charisma to save thousands from certain death.
You should do the dark history of “Working” like where the concept of being employed by someone came from…. Cause I mean that dates back to idk even know when!
Aloha Bailey. I’ve listened to you since -obviously- 2020 and literally never commented before. So I know you read these sooooooo thank you. That’s all.
Waited for the second ep to drop so I'm a lil late with this, but cheetahs are very similar in personalities to dogs if they're raised with people and other animals to model after 😊
This is great Best entertainment ever, love the cheetah part, she was basically just a big cat lady Also, have you ever thought of covering Jayne Mansfield in a dark history episode? Her life was WILD, she was very close friend with the founder of the church of satan
I love baileys voice and storytelling sp much tht i even listen to her ads..idk how much they paying her but they should double it , would never hear about them if it wasn’t for Baileyana ✨💞
I recently learned that if you raise a cheetah like a puppy it can actually bw domesticated like a dog. Any other wild cat (and some domesticated ones) would be likely to attack you at some stage even if you raise them with a bottle. But cheetahs are puppies by heart and they will become fully loyal and, as i said, domesticated. This is why they are highly thought after as pets by people who don't know what to do with their money (even today).
