"What's the matter with you, Staros? Those men should be reinforced immediately! What are they doing?I can see 'em through my glasses. They're lying behind that ledge! They should be up and out, cleaning out those machine guns! Over!" Believe it or not a *VERY* similar incident occurred in Guadalcanal at Hill 53 (During the Battle of Mount Austen around January, 1943) It was between 2nd Battalion Commander Lt. Colonel Herbert Mitchell and Captain William Blatt of Fox Company (They were part of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division,). During the attack Fox Company got themselves isolated from Easy and George Company by going to far to the right of everyone else. He wanted Fox company to link up with Easy Company out in the open. But heavy gunfire pinned both companies down. Captain Blatt then asked his XO to withdraw and go into the jungle and attack Hill 53 from the north. Lt. Col. Mitchell was having none of that and ordered Blatt to commit his whole company into the attack..... Captain Blatt refused to obey that order
The poignant scene in the movie between Captain Staros and Colonel Tall is based on this real life event. Also, the assault on the bunker system led by Captain John Gaff (John Cusack), is based on the actions of Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Charles W. Davis (then Captain), who led a small group of men with grenades and destroyed machine gun and mortar positions which had effectively held off the American attacks across the ridge.

Quite believable. James Jones was in Fox Company when it happened.
