So what makes the entire story of The Golden Lovers really interesting is that the script, what little actually existed, was basically pushed along by Omega and Ibushi. Their first stuff was in the company Dramatic Dream Team, and then the latter stuff with the Bullet Club was in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and the writers were not talking to each other.
Not because they didn't want to, but because they were already busy running their own companies.
That's what SEW means when he says "this is a story that can only happen in pro wrestling" because such a thing cannot be scripted and written ahead with foresight, with a strong 4th wall.

The story of the Golden Lovers was largely improvised as they went along. When Kenny and Kota had their falling out, it was in a different company entirely and they had no idea that Kenny would join the Bullet Club. When he joined the Bullet Club, they had no idea Kota would face AJ Styles with Kenny acting as Styles's henchman. When Kota faced AJ Styles, the decision to incorporate Kenny and Kota's history being made the day of, and so on. They're just really dedicated to their craft and like to slip in little references to that narrative in hopes that they'll be able to pay it off later, which they largely did.

Wrestling has an insane history. Someone made a long video about it and it's so worth watching as it goes over the franchise wars, the classic age of New York wrestling and Bruno Sanmartino's historic run; the golden age of hulkamania; the new gen with the monday night wars and the infamous montreal screwjob; the 2000's smackdown vs raw era; and the modern era with some stuff of the current triple H era.

Or at least at the time of Eyepatch's last video no one had died, though unfortunately after the last video he published a wrestler he mentioned a few times off hand, Bray Wyatt, died of a heart attack at the end of August. No Triple H did not get fired. The exact opposite actually. He would become a main eventer for the rest of his career, marry the owner's daughter, and become head of creative and basically the third or fourth most powerful person in the company. A fascinating thing about wrestling stories is that they never end. There’s more that’s happened with the Golden Lovers since this video was made. This is ALOT of text so feel free to read as much or as little as you want, If you’re interested.
First off, a little piece of the story that wasn’t touched on in the video since it wasn’t relevant to the story at the time, but becomes relevant later. After winning the G1 climax tournament in 2016, Kenny Omega challenged for the IWGP World title in the main event of the biggest show of the year for New Japan Pro Wrestling, Wrestle Kingdom. His opponent, the champion, was Kazuchika Okada, the Ace of the company and the final boss of pro wrestling. The two had a legendary 46 minute match, but Kenny came up short. Kenny got a rematch 6 months later, but this one went to a 60 minute time limit draw in another legendary match. The next time Omega met Okada was in the semi finals of the G1 Climax tournament in 2017 in which he finally managed to beat Okada. However, this being a tournament setting it was a non-title match, though if Kenny managed to win the tournament he would get his 3rd chance at the title. This is where he lost in the finals and met Ibushi backstage.
Shortly after Omega and Ibushi reconciled, Okada, still the champion, offered Omega one last title match, Okada looking to redeem that time limit draw they had the previous year and beat him outright. The two agreed on a no time limit best 2/3 falls match so there would be no doubt who the better man was. The match went 64 minutes and this time Kenny, now motivated not by selfish ambition but love, defeats Okada and achieves his lifelong dream of becoming IWGP Champion with Ibushi by his side.
Kenny is clearly his best self when he’s with Ibushi and the two would get another chance to test each other in the 2018 G1 Climax, meeting in the semifinals, their first match against each other in 6 years. Omega and Ibushi have a spectacle of a match, but at the same time it feels like they’re holding back, like they know this isn’t the last time they will face off in the ring. Ibushi once again defeats Omega, but instead of wallowing in disappointment, Omega embraces Ibushi after the match.
Now, lets take a second to talk about Ibushi. Ibushi’s story is one of unfulfilled potential. Ibushi came from a wealthy family and thus has never had to worry about putting his nose to the grindstone in pro wrestling. He’s free to peruse his passions like wrestling in a river, shooting fireworks into his chest during a match, or wrestling a blowup doll (all of these are real things that happened). More importantly he never signed a contract with New Japan and the promoters were not willing to give a spot on top of the card to a guy who could leave the company and never return any day he felt like it. One of his biggest supporter of his talent but also one of his biggest critics of his lack of ambition was Hiroshi Tanahashi, the Ace of the company prior to Okada. Coincidentally, Tanahashi would be Ibushi’s opponent in the finals of the G1. This seemed like Ibushi’s chance to finally prove Tanahashi wrong and fulfill his potential. But in a stunning upset, Tanahashi, the old, broken down cowboy heading out for one last ride, beats Ibushi and goes on to face Kenny at Wrestle Kingdom.
Just days prior to the match with Tanahashi, Kenny’s friends, Matt and Nick Jackson, “Hangman” Adam Page and Cody Rhodes, announce the formation of All Elite Wrestling, a new major American promotion. With Kenny’s New Japan contract set to expire next month, it seems likely that he will leave New Japan and Ibushi. Kenny loses the title to Tanahashi and leaves for this new venture while Ibushi finally signs a contract with New Japan, guaranteeing the separation of the Golden Lovers in 2019.
In 2019 Kenny gets off to a slow start with AEW. He was expected to be the top singles wrestler in the company, but after a series of major defeats in singles matches Kenny reevaluates his career and finds himself in a new tag team with Adam Page. The two have immediate chemistry and even work all the way up to winning the AEW Tag Team titles.
(As an aside, the Kenny Omega/Adam Page story is another amazing pro wrestling story. It’s chronicled in the fantastic RUclips series “The Good, The Bad and The Elite.” If you have any interest in seeing more pro wrestling stories I’d highly recommend it. You can get 3 years of story events in a couple hours.)
Meanwhile, Ibushi, now committed to New Japan, sets out to fulfill his potential. He wins the G1 and gets his chance at Wrestle Kingdom. Things are little different this year, however. There is going to be a mini tournament at Wrestle Kingdom featuring the IWGP Intercontinental Champion Jay White and his challenger Tetsuya Naito as well as Ibushi and Okada, who is one again IWGP Champion, to crown one undisputed champion. Unfortunately, Ibushi loses his title match against Okada and even loses the 3rd place match against Jay White.
(Another quick aside, the pandemic really did a number on wrestling in 2020. New Japan shut down completely for 4 months before returning with limited capacity crowds who weren’t allowed to cheer or boo, while AEW was filming TV in an empty building before allowing a few hundred masked, socially distant fans into an open-air venue. But wrestling goes on.)
For Kenny, he and Page spend most of the year as tag team champions, but cracks begin to form between the two. This lead to a bitter breakup of their team after losing the titles in September. Kenny decides to refocus himself on singles wrestling and he quickly earns an AEW World title shot to close out the year. In that title match Kenny relapses, falling back to old villainous ways and cheating to ultimately secure the victory and the AEW World title.
Ibushi seeks redemption from his embarrassing performance at Wrestle Kingdom in 2020. He wins the G1 for the second year in a row, but is cheated out of his Wrestle Kingdom title match, losing to Jay White again. The IWGP Champion Tetsuya Naito, however, offers Ibushi a deal. He didn’t like how Jay White cheated to beat Ibushi and since Wrestle Kingdom this year is a 2 night event he proposes that he and Ibushi wrestle for the title on night 1 and the winner faces Jay White on night 2. Ibushi finally comes through and defeats Naito to win the title and then gets revenge on Jay White the next Day. Ibushi has finally reached the mountain top.
In 2021 Kenny Omega grows even more powerful. While continuing to defend his AEW title through nefarious tactics, he also wins titles in both Mexico and another American promotion. He reign of terror continues for most of the year, but he’s finally defeated for the AEW title in November by his former partner Adam Page. Kenny disappears for almost a full year after that, having racked up several major injuries during his title reign and needing multiple surgeries.
Things don’t go so well for Ibushi in 2021. He lost his title pretty quickly after winning it and while he did make it back to the finals of the G1 Climax, he suffered a major injury during the match and lost via referee stoppage, the first time a G1 Climax had ever ended in such a fashion. This would be the last we’d see of Ibushi in New Japan. Ibushi suffered multiple setback while recovering from this injury and along with issues he had with someone in the New Japan office would lead to him leaving the company 2 years later.
Kenny Omega returned in late 2022 to become a trio with his friends Matt and Nick Jackson and win the new minted AEW Trios Championships. They had a successful run with those titles well into 2023 before running into the Blackpool Combat Club or BCC, a stable of wrestlers who were the exact opposite of Kenny and his friends. While Kenny, Matt and Nick were flashy and colorful, the BCC were gritty and violent. The brutality of the war between the two groups actually forced a reconciliation between Kenny, Matt and Nick and their former friend Adam Page for the common cause of defeating the BCC. As the groups headed towards the terrifying Blood and Guts match, a 5 vs 5 cage match meant to be so vicious that it would settle the score once and for all, Kenny’s team still only had 4 members. On the final show before the Blood and Guts match Kenny revealed that the final member of his team would be Ibushi. Ibushi helped his team to victory, ended this feud with the BCC for good.
And this is about where we are today. Ibush again has no contract and makes sporadic appearances for AEW. Will Kenny finally defeat Ibushi in a singles match? Will the Golden Lovers win another set of tag team titles? Will Kenny and Ibush make sweet love in the middle of the ring? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!

Oh man, Vince McMahon is a total psychopath. He discarded talent just because they got injured and couldn't work for months, or because they didn't get super jacked(seriously, Vinny Mac has a thing for dudes with Bobby builder physiques), or because they vocally expressed concern about something in ring or on camera(Vince fired Jeff Jarrett because he wanted Jeff's manager to fondle his crotch in the ring as part of his entrance and Jeff said no).
Vince McMahon did know how to build and grow a wrestling company. In the late-70's he brought the World Wide Wrestling Federation and shortened it to the World Wrestling Federation, which got changed to World Wrestling Entertainment after losing a copyright lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund, and used the then new technology of videotape and sold them all over the nation(originally the WWF, now WWE, only operated in the northeast), and he grew the company into a worldwide and household name.

I have 3 wrestling stories I'm pretty sure Eyepatch hasn't gone into, which I think you'll enjoy, and all centered on AEW. AEW is the current main American rival company to WWE, and which was created largely thanks to Kenny Omega and some of his friends from the Bullet Club: Cody Rhodes, Adam Page, and the Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson. Amongst the roster they got together was a friend of theirs, Brandon Cutler, who had spent years away from wrestling before coming back to the business. Cutler wound up spending most of his time on AEW Dark, the company's RUclips show where lower level talent were bested by the bigger stars in matches deemed not worth airing on TV, and Cutler lost. A lot. But his skills also improved with every match, and despite constantly snatching defeat from the hands of victory, he started gaining a fanbase.
In his race to the bottom though, he had one rival: Peter Avalon. They eventually tried leaning on each other to get a shared win as a tag team, but Avalon would do anything to try and win, while Cutler wanted victory to be genuine, and the losses kept piling up as they never fully came together. Finally, they turned on each other and fought each other for that first win. The first and second matches ended in a draw, and the Young Bucks told Cutler that they weren't going to cheer him on anymore as friends. The third match came along, with all ways for a match NOT to have a winner eliminated from the rules, and the two give it all they have. Avalon goes too far heel (bad guy), and his one ally leaves him. Meanwhile, Cutler's struggles inspire the Young Bucks to come back and cheer him on, and Cutler got his first win. You'd think he'd won a belt with the way they celebrated. It's a wonderful example of good, low-stakes writing.
My second story, since you kept bracing yourself for death, is about the passing of Brodie Lee. Brodie Lee (real name Jonathan Huber), was a great wrestler who came to AEW and helped turn a stable of wrestlers the fans thought of as unfunny jokes into a legitimate team, first as real threats and then as a genuinely funny group. He acted as the villain, but behind the scenes he was a wonderful mentor that people genuinely liked to be around. He ended up passing from a non-Covid related respiratory condition. AEW delayed revealing this to the public in order to give his family time to grieve, and then when the news became public they put on the best memorial show ever produced. The matches were unrelated to any narrative, instead used to honor him. Friends of his from outside the company entered the show to send him off. The final match was a 6-man tag match, with the winners being his son's three favorite wrestlers in the company. The whole point of the show was to give Brodie's son one more day of pure happiness connected to his father. The kid has a standing contract offer to join the company when he grows up, and he's since been on the show multiple times in a mascot role for his father's old stable.
The third story brings us back to CM Punk. After his falling out with WWE, he left wrestling altogether, for something like a decade. From the moment AEW came into existence, the fans were demanding to know when he'd be signed on, and the guy in charge of the company (Tony Khan) was trying to get him even then. Punk had no interest, until the Brodie Lee memorial show. The respect shown to Lee and his family was a tipping point for Punk, and after years of negotiation he signed on. It was the worst kept secret in wrestling, with the next show being moved to his home of Chicago for his return. The stadium was packed, and even on TV the noise was deafening. Then the beginning of his theme played, and no one could hear any more of it over the roar of the crowd. The local hero, come home to the profession he once loved. And he is clearly, genuinely overwhelmed by the love. Please react to that moment, it is absolutely stunning.

18:38 and this was the moment you realised the secret behind the writing of Japanese pro wrestling:
It's just live action anime! And that's not a joke. When watching their wrestling for long enough you can spot a ton of the tropes used in writing any fighting-/sports-based anime.
Meanwhile American pro wrestling's writing is probably closer to that of daily soaps.

Haha, as a wrestling fan, it is kind of funny to think that Triple H got punished for that interview.. that was literally the start of him being the world champion for a heck of a long time! XD Again, Eyepatch is talking about the mix between what is real and what is scripted getting blurred. The point here is that H wasn't punished for what he said, it was the 'real life' reason for him becoming unstoppable in a fictional world! :) In fact this was probably within the year that he married the owners daughter. XD
Regarding the autograph thing, there is a really sad video that came out a couple of months ago of Jeff Hardy (very popular wrestler who has had a lot of demons in the past) getting approached by two guys that get him to sign like.... 50 or so photographs in the middle of an airport. Is is actually horrible to watch (the two guys were the ones filiming it).
It's important to remember the part early on when it was said that wrestlers needed to stay in character when out in public, but by this stage they were also being their REAL SELVES on screen. Even after these real moments, they would continue playing the fiction characters publicly. Hence the 'blurring' the lines of what is real or not. Nowadays, wrestling absolutely thrives on the blurred lines, so what is real and what isn't is often up to the viewer's guess.
AGAIN, so sorry for the essay. Making this comment while watching. Really glad you came around to how good wrestling can be for storytelling. My personal fav is his most recent Wrestling video 'The Unreality of Pro Wrestling', which tells the story ark of a character that.. without getting emotional.. got me through a lot. So good. Enjoy, and thanks so much for the great reaction!!

The thing about pro-wrestling is that ALMOST EVERYONE has an epic story that has been told and is being told. Their own epic stories overlap with other epic stories and it's like a web of who plays what part. The other wrestlers that were shown and mentioned in the Golden Lovers storyline (i.e. Cody Rhodes, Prince Devitt, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Hiroki Goto) also have their own epic stories

You probably got answers to some of your questions by now but I want to give my own. So writing for wrestling isn't planned that far ahead (weeks and months)and you have to be prepared to change everything days or even hours before a show. Injuries, fan reaction, real world events can just change everything. Take this years main event of WrestleMania the original plan was good guy Dwayne The Rock Johnson vs his cousin main villain for last few years Roman reigns. But because of fans wanting main good guy Cody Rhodes (yes the bad guy from the bullet club) to finish his story they went with Cody Rhodes and good guy Seth Rollins vs now bad guy Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Roman reigns as the main even of day 1of WrestleMania and day 2 of WrestleMania being Cody Rhodes vs Roman reigns.
With the HHH stuff he didn't get into more trouble after the interview and he is now the actual boss of WWE

The Bullet Club is the biggest, most beloved faction in the last 25 years. Former leaders Prince Devitt (Finn Balor), AJ Styles and Cody Rhodes are now stars in WWE, and former members Kenny Omega, Matt and Nick Jackson, Adam Page and Cody Rhodes broke off from New Japan In 2018, forming what's now one of the west's two largest wrestling company, AEW

    The Triple H thing
HHH, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash were best friends. Hall and Nash ;eft the company for a rival company. On a house show, not on TV, they all met in the ring and hugged. A fan in the audience took a photo and posted it online.
Michaels was the champion and couldn't be punished. Hall and Nash didn't work there anymore, so couldn't be punished. So they punished HHH. He was slotted to win a big tournament, but they changed the winner to Steve Austin and he became one of the most famous wrestlers of all time.
HHH currently runs the company and is married to the owners daughter, so it turned out okay for him.

how long do they know? how do they plan it? how do they make it half real and half fake? Welcome. You're now a wrestling fan. We still don't know. Usually, it looks like an accident. But, truly, you have to wonder most of the time, did that just happen? Are they ok?
I get worked all the time by fake injuries and twitter beefs that come to the screen subtly. Most of it is on purpose, but how could it be on purpose? Cody Rhodes went and started his own wrestling company before coming back and being a huge star in the WWE. So, who f'n knows. lol

Short answer: Yes, Wrestling is a thing that exists, therefore it's real.
Slightly longer answer. Yes and no, Wrestlers are real athletes, taking real bumps. But the storyline isn't real and winners are predetermined.
On a related note, I never understood why wrestling being skripted was such a big deal to so many people. Noone ever said Breaking Bad sucks because it's just actors portraying fictional characters

4:12 His wrestling persona was Hunter Hearst Helmsley maybe a year after the curtain call Shawn and Hunter formed DX and Hunter started going by Triple H first it was like a nickname so he'd be announced Triple H, Hunter Hearst Helmsley but later after taking over leadership of DX he'd just go by Triple H.
His real name is Paul Levesque and he ended up marrying the boss's daughter and staying near the main event scene since entering it in 1999 until he pretty much retired around 2018 and showcased his talent for managing the business as virtually everybody loved NXT while he was in charge.

Using real-life drama in wrestling is a way for them to replicate the era of the 70s and before when fans used to think it was real. They likely told Triple H to air his legitimate grievances during that interview. Its called a "worked shoot" in the business, doing or saying something real with permission. So it's both real and fake at the same time, simultaneously being himself and playing a character. It's a dangerous rope to walk because you run the risk of alienating more casual fans who don't keep up with backstage drama.

The twists and turns you ask about will probably never be truly known until months if not years after the occasion, it's all the stuff they try to hide, and will only be learned through interviews, dirt sheets from inside sources or even post-mortem in some cases.. it's all its a long and interesting conversation to have and really exposes the sometimes hideous and nasty underbelly of wresting

Even more impressive between Kenny and Ibushi is initially, Kenny knew no Japanese and Ibushi knew no English, yet their first match they call it in the ring.
