Hey! I know I'm a few months late to the party, but I'm really enjoying your reactions! I was bummed that episode 3 got copyright stricken, because that's one of my favorites! I love seeing Colin in love and all cute and awkward! I haven't read the books, but I do know they differ from the show in a few significant ways. And I actually think his rake era makes sense for show Colin. He was always the sweet, naive, romantic, enthusiastic one among his brothers- he didn't even want to kiss Marina before the wedding. But he also spent the first two seasons being taken advantage of (Marina, Jack Featherington, etc) or mocked (mostly by his family) for those very qualities. So having had the message drilled into him that who he was simply wasn't good enough (he repeatedly refers to himself as a fool, especially in season 2), and then with Penelope no longer in his life to pull him back from the edge with her love and acceptance, it makes sense that he came back different. Trying to be the man society wants/expects him to be... a rake like his brothers. But while they genuinely enjoyed that lifestyle, Colin never really did. In his journal he talks about the distance he feels, even in the most intimate scenarios. He tries to be real with those jerks he calls friends, talking about how lonely this pretense makes him feel. And the fact that everyone seems to prefer this persona he's put on only enhances his feelings of emptiness and loneliness, further proving to him that no one wants the real him. Which just makes the love story with Pen all the sweeter! Because she's the one who saw and loved who he really was all along. They're both on similar journeys this season. Both loving the other desperately, and thinking they are out of their league. Both learning that who they are is worthy of love, even the parts that society doesn't accept. It's my absolute favorite season so far! I can't wait to finish watching it with you!!

I think we are all Penelope. In a way. This is a fantasy for everyone who believes in their heart of hearts love is not for them, that they are too strange, too different, that they have the wrong body or the wrong personality or the wrong background. We are all Cyrano de Bergerac, all Brienne of Tarth, all Luna Lovegood, all Lieutenant Barclay...just as we are all Penelope Featherington. Sooner or later.
