    The breast milk bags are VERY important, store up as much milk as you can, my daughter became ill with both of her children and had to take medication, and she had to pump & dump, because the baby could not be exposed to the medication. But she was still able to feed the babies the stored up milk, without having to resort to artificial milk. Then after she finished the medication and it was out of her system, she returned to breast feeding. This gave my daughter such a peace of mind since we had the formula shortage as well.

    I highly recommend learning about post partum depression together prior.
    As exciting new life is, and as anticipated this life is, the human body can be really messed up after birth and if you both are aware beforehand it might help Alessio to be aware of signs to watch for.
    (Even pre-birth depression can happen) only sharing because it is a real thing to be aware of, and many don’t think about it until it happens to them and they feel like it’s just them and there is so much false guilt!!❤
    Very happy for you both!

      💯 I lived with my sister the first 6 months with the baby and she was in bed nearly all day. When she went back to work, she called out nearly 3 days a week and they fired her after a month. Her husband took care of baby most of the day (thank God I was there to help!) It was really horrible and losing her job then just added to the depression.

    I pumped with my first while trying to breastfeed and I became an overproducer. If you plan to breastfeed and you’re uncomfortable at the beginning you can use a boon cup on the opposite side for the first few weeks and store that! Seeing a lactation consultant early on can be really helpful. Establishing a good breastfeeding relationship with baby the first 4 weeks will set you up for success!

      I did too, and I nursed them both, so I had a manual pump and nursing pads, but the rest is definitely a big ? for the average new mother. A tube of lanolin for the nipples is an absolute necessity, though. It does not need to be washed off the nipples before nursing, and will spare you the experience of bloody nipple wounds.

    My babies were born premature so they hadn't developed the sucking reflex and had to be tube fed in the neonatal ward. Pumping was vital to encourage my milk supply. You need to do it every 4 hours to build the supply, so these bags are life savers. There are glass and plastic bottle options available but when you're exhausted, the last thing you want to do is wash and sterilise them. The bags are disposable so they're the hassle free option

    I'm with Alessio, I thought these were going to be home products. So I knew the ultrasound, but was confused by it too.
    Your choices seem to indicate you believe breastfeeding will be very difficult. It can be a bit in the beginning, but stick with it and it becomes so second nature that you can do it practically in your sleep.
    I kept reminding myself that my grandmother did this 6 times practically alone on the farm, so surely I can do it with modern medical help.
    You got this.

    @ientje8888 3 months ago +3

    I didn’t worry too much about pumping when breastfeeding it adds a lot of pressure to build up a supply the first months, just an occasional pump for when your breasts are really full/after a feeding can built up a little stash for when you want to step out for a couple of hours the first months (go to the hairdresser/….) and be sure dad has some milk. Or if you’re worried baby is hungry you can test with some extra from the supy. Otherwise if you can be with the baby to feed that establishes the best supply for your baby. Dad can help bringing baby to sleepy mom/changing. But taking over nightfeeds if that means you have to pump at that time doesn’t really help imo! Off course you can always do formula too! It’s your choice!

    You are correct when it comes to pumping. Some women do make more milk than others and need to pump the excess. Also, some women pump so that they can share feeding time with their partner or relatives. You can freeze your milk which is really cool. I think it last in the freezer for at least 3 months if not longer. You guys look so happy. Jesse, you look so beautiful! Not that you weren't beautiful before, you just have a different look about you now it's a different kind of beauty. So excited for you guys!!!

    Pumping is an option, but usually not a necessity. If you are at home with the baby, you can breastfeed exclusively. But pumping can be nice to have a break. In the first few weeks, the baby is literally constantly nursing. Not just every 2-3 hours. Babies are nursed on demand. Whenever the baby wants to eat, you should feed it. You also don't need to freeze any milk if you don't want to. There are a lot of options!

    • @msannaandersson
      @msannaandersson 3 months ago +6

      Also pumping doesn't work for everyone even though you might still be able to breastfeed.

    • @fruityflutie
      @fruityflutie 3 months ago +5

      I pumped a little bit with my first born because everyone said I had to. I had a storage of milk that I really didn’t need because my baby never took a bottle and I was at home, nursing on demand anyway. With my second, I never even bothered pumping. It was just me, my husband was deployed so he couldn’t help, and we lived away from family too. Nursed on demand, had no trouble with supply at all. And with pumping, you can also risk encouraging an oversupply because the body works off supply/demand. The more you pump, the more demand the body thinks you have. Can be good if you need to pump, but that soreness when you’re engorged is awful. I would just hand express to release some pressure if I felt too full as my baby’s feeds were stretching out or they were sleeping for longer stretches.

      In what world do you live in where you can have a baby constantly attached to your boobs? Like you said, the baby is constantly nursing. This is NOT an option for most mothers. I lived with my sister her first months with baby and the baby never correctly breastfed, and when she did, it was painful and took FOREVER. Pumping is much less painful and takes 30 min and my sister was able to do other things. Pumping also allows the father to feed the baby, particularly so my sister could sleep, and yes, in America WORK. Portable pumps were also lifesavers when we were out. As I mentioned, breastfeeding can take 45min+ PER BOOB and who has that time!? It is not realistic and I know friends who stopped breastfeeding/pumping altogether because it basically takes up 80% of your day. To me, that was the most surprising thing about “going through this” or helping out.

    I too remember the iced cabbage leaves in the hospital in 1987, they were sooo wonderful. Also, with my first in 1987, the hospital gave us a celebratory steak dinner for two (for me and new daddy who also was able to sleep-in in my room), with all the fixings, tiramisu, and a non-alcoholic sparkly apple drink. In 1991, with baby #2, there was no celebratory steak dinner, same hospital, same insurance. Sigh. But there were healthy lactation-promoting snacks for me every few hours, which did not happen in 1987.

      Same in Germany. The midwife, who came to our house in the days/weeks after birth told me to put cabbage leaves on my breasts. Worked great but only short as they dry up your milk. I had a huge oversupply. Great for those who want to bottle feed to dry up the milk and right out of the fridge, cold like an ice pack.

    Alessio cracks me up, he is so funny and I can't wait to see the expression on his face when the little one comes into the world! You are the cutest couple and we enjoy watching you. Jessi you will do wonderful and I love your attitude about it all. You will make the best parents! A very blessed child he or she! I am going to guess and say it's a girl! I have always felt it is a girl but no matter what the gender, what a lucky baby!

    Alessio, you need to get some of these products. The pillow, ice pads, breast covers. Those will help so much. Great job on guessing the products. Love from Hawaii

    If you're anything like me, you're going to leak milk a lot during the first few weeks, so make sure you get milk collectors that you can wear in your bra or if you hear a baby cry because you will let down. I swore by the Haaka ladybugs because they kept you from making a mess when removing them.

    You did well Asessio! As a Dutch person, I have never heard of the gas passer. However I just googled and I could buy it online if I wanted... Al the other products I knew existed, but you definitely do not need them all! This is very much a personal preference thing. Many of these products have cheaper alternatives, for example I used couch cushions to be comfortable in bed while pregnant, and I used bags with apple syrup to cool my breasts after delivery.
