I think you are right in the becomming the part you play. My favorite writer ever Hunter S Thompson more or less became, at least parts of, his own character Raoul Duke. He spoke a lot on it, and I think its a legit phenomenon, especially if you couple it with fighting a crowd, you almost need to engrain it. That being said, at some point you need to take a man at his word, and he crossed a line with Leon. If you bring up my dead old man, its no longer a competition, you made it something its not supposed to be.
