I know every rider wants to win a stage of the TDF but when you have a true potential winner in your squad, surely the best outcome for the teams sponsors and riders payday, is to secure the overall winner.
Chapeau to Mathews for his gutsy breakaway and staying strong on the final climb to win. Felt sorry for Bettiol though. As far as the GC battle is concerned, Vingegaard is still looking pretty strong in being able to keep up with Pogacar through all the attacks. But with each passing day, he is having to do it alone, with his team mates falling away quickly. Fatigue is affecting all the riders with them having to ride close to 200 km in 30-40 deg temperatures. Week 3 will be a survival of the fittest, with Pogacar still having opportunities to regain time, but it is difficult to predict by how much.
In the last years this has become a more popular trend in cycling. They do it for aero gains, since it reduces the frontal area of the rider by a little bit. It is not just sprinters who do it, but it seems logical that riders who prefer flatter races tend to do this more as aerodynamics are more of a factor in those kind of races. In extreme mountain stages it wouldn't give you a measurable advantage, so climbers mostly don't bother doing it. There might be some who have a more curved bar, but I think in the TdF peloton they mostly just turn their brake levers inwards. If you look at Matthews' bike for example, you can see that his levers are inwards, but his drops are still parallel and straight. I have seen bars that are bent inwards, but only on gravelbikes.
In one of Pog’s interviews after the stage, he said something to the effect of, Jumbo is gonna be working real hard in the next week. I wonder if this stems from Jumbo having no help for Jonas on the final climb whereas UAE had two riders for Pogacar. Even if Jonas has to ride alone, him and Pogacar are at a high enough level where I feel like other gc guys won’t try to throw a flurry of attacks at him. We already see this to some extent with Geraint Thomas riding a steady pace hoping to just stay on the podium.
TJV know Vingegaard can cover any attack from Pogacar, Pogacar is just a better sprinter not better climber than Vingo, he has never distanced Vingegaard, while Vingo looks too calm just to follow him. The team is saving themselves for next week. I am almost certain Kuss, Roglic and Kruijwijk are saving some energy. Vingo will drop Pogacar in one of the later stages as well.
If Tadej is asking Enios to help him then he may well be toast. TJV played perfect team tactics on the day, last Tuesday, that Jonas took Yellow from Tadej. UAE is no match for TJV and if Tadej can't reduce the gap to less than a minute before the TT next Saturday I don't think he will be able to win it in the TT.
Maybe a stupid question, but why didn't Vingegaard just let Pogacar go? I mean there was 180km to go, so there was no way, Pogacar would finish it alone without getting catched up to. Can someone explain me why it's so important for the yellow jersey to follow their rival so close (when it's +100km to go and he is driving alone).
Very occasionally, a capable rider can be successful at long-range solo attack, like what Froome did at stage 19 on 2018 Giro. Pogacar is a good time-trialist too, he could've gained minutes if Jumbo-Visma let him out of their sight for too long. So yeah, Vingegaard know firsthand what Pogacar is capable of, and decided to just not take any chances. I think.
I don't think, Pogacar was planning on riding 180 km on his own. Probably hoping for some chaos, and that he would end up in a break away group in front of Jonas.
Most radio would be in the sort of: "Somebody bring food/drink", "Imma go pee", "I need a bike change", "Can the team car come", "Drop back to help X rider", "the gap is X seconds"... There isnt much tacticising going on on the radio, riders can talk to each other during the race.
watch the tour of flanders movies, there is a lot of insight into what is going on behind the scenes and in the team cars. Great production quality too!
Didnt Cadel try to get in a break away group one time and was yelled at and told to drop back. Do GC guys really think the break away group is going to allow that. A bit silly by Pogacar
Andreas Kron had a flat tire at pretty much the worst possible time on the stage. But even without the flat, Matthews was so strong on that stage, that I doubt he would have won anyways. And I'm danish, so I'm even looking at it with tinted glasses 😉😂
I hope Matthews finally realizes he is much more than a good sprinter, and he should try to make the race hard before sprinting against (reduced) competition, compared to all those times he relied on his sprint in a group that's too big.
@@MrRhino4U I think Cav could have beat WVA in a lot of places where WVA has picked up points. Plus Cav is smaller and lighter than a lot of sprinters, so I think he comes through the mountains better.
@@brianwright9514 Do you mean the intermediate sprints? You might be right, but what would they get from that? A more secure 2nd place in the points classification? Yeah, Cav might have gotten his record win. But they promised Jakobsen the tour last year already if he's in form, which he is. Let's wait for Paris and see how next week goes. It's just not a sprinter's delight this year, and Quickstep don't seem to have the team or the desire to control flatter stages into a bunch sprint for Jakobsen (which would have been the same for Cav)
@@MrRhino4U Quickstep was in better form last year. But it seems to me that Cav is a more technically proficient sprinter than Jakobson. I think Cav could have beaten WVA for both intermediate sprints and stage wins that would have required him to surf wheels instead of rely on Quickstep's leadout train.
I don’t think pog should have attacked today. He also did a lot of attacks in week 1 which was unnecessary and got him only some 40 odd seconds. Jumbo have the ammo to pretty much cover anything he can do. I don’t know how much this effort will cost him in the pyrenees
Pog is in incredible form as is Jonas but Pog must not make this a watts per kilo fight just go full ballestic puncheur rider. I mean pretend its a Amstel Gold race The roleur type stages are a better option
Jonas is the best at stay on Pogacar's wheel all the time. He won't let him go. Ever. Pogacar's only chance now is on time trial or if something bad luck happened to Jonas.

Cleaver strategy by Jonas, how to win tdf? Just stay behind Pogacar wheels to create 2.22 gap hahahaha
Show of strength. Vingo was letting Pogi know 'you cant go anywhere without me, I m just too strong for you right now. So sit back down'.. 😂😂
Jonas du ser hakket ud i Yellow!
Kæmpe daddy
Hakket daddy
Even Le Tour De France rush home to await Lanterne Rouge!
Jonas and pog are same power, stamina and endurance.the lucky guy the winner TDF
cycling noob here … compared to televised f1 race, would radio traffic from the teams here add to the spectacle? or would it be mostly windy yelling ?
Most radio would be in the sort of:
"Somebody bring food/drink", "Imma go pee", "I need a bike change", "Can the team car come", "Drop back to help X rider", "the gap is X seconds"...
There isnt much tacticising going on on the radio, riders can talk to each other during the race.
I would love it
watch the tour of flanders movies, there is a lot of insight into what is going on behind the scenes and in the team cars. Great production quality too!
Didnt Cadel try to get in a break away group one time and was yelled at and told to drop back. Do GC guys really think the break away group is going to allow that. A bit silly by Pogacar
Good for Mathews. Always had sympathy for the guy and thought he deserved a win for a long time.
Andreas Kron had a flat tire at pretty much the worst possible time on the stage. But even without the flat, Matthews was so strong on that stage, that I doubt he would have won anyways. And I'm danish, so I'm even looking at it with tinted glasses 😉😂
The fuck that jumbo is loaded and pogacar still has the chance men his phoenomenal
That was just testing. Today will be the real deal & taking back yellow !
Today is a flat sprint stage 😂
Riis, Rasmusen, I AM certain that Jonas now, Denmark MEN know how to do IT...
2010 called and wants their HDR photos from ASO.
I hope Matthews finally realizes he is much more than a good sprinter, and he should try to make the race hard before sprinting against (reduced) competition, compared to all those times he relied on his sprint in a group that's too big.
Real question, though... Will Quick Step get any more stage wins this year? Kinda looking like a mistake not to bring Cav.
Yeah cav really would have a chance in stages 5-14. Shame he isnt here.
Where do you feel Cav would have been able to contest a stage win where Jakobsen didn't?
Pog was in the lead, Jonas was just shadowing him, either getting tired or just conserving energy...either way, Pog is the stronger one!
Meintjies Yates battle of old on its way,
Pronunciation: Vingegor
Jumbo visma team = tadej pogacar
Chris Horner stole your video title.
Pog is in incredible form as is Jonas but Pog must not make this a watts per kilo fight just go full ballestic puncheur rider.
I mean pretend its a Amstel Gold race
The roleur type stages are a better option
His name is pronounced my nt yes
yeah vingo is definitely much stronger but you've never safe from a day off or smthg
Good to know that "covid" attacks only on podium, not on bikes! LOL. Be safe , ride in muzzle!
Jonas is the best at stay on Pogacar's wheel all the time. He won't let him go. Ever. Pogacar's only chance now is on time trial or if something bad luck happened to Jonas.
What is Pogocar dreaming of at nights, waking up breathing heavily and sweating: a blur of yellow, that VINGEGAARD Jonas fellow!
5:00 Aha! Pantani did not have a proper burial?
Bicycle
can/do team listen to each other ?
I love Pogačar (am Slovenian,so a bit biased) and his constant trying and attacking, but i am starting to lose hope he can drop Vingegaard :/
I am Danish, a bit biased too 😀. Anything can still happen, Jumbo Visma didn´t look at all strong today, so there is still hope for you.
@@AurioDK Pogačar's team will have to pick up the slack is what needs to happen. Or yeah, it will be very difficult. They have to wear him down just like jumbo attacked pogačar.
I amdanish and love Pogi. He is so awesome
Biased? You mean "based"? Slovakia 🇸🇰 ftw.
@@IAmAlpharius20 No, it's biased, don't you know what it means?
