I follow half a dozen "Alaska" channels and the one thing all of them have in common is it takes a lot of money to move and live in Alaska. For me it'll always remain an unfulfilled dream but cool to see others doing it.
Hey, thanks for watching our channel 🙂 it was expensive to move to alaska upfront for us because of the distance from our origination. But in our case, it is very much cheaper than continuing with the lifestyle we lived in Pennsylvania. Land is cheaper here, taxes are much lower, and skilled trades pay higher. We are just average people. We made a budget and made it happen debt free. We believe anyone can do it if they focus on the goal at heart. Good luck in your future endeavors!
You can do it on the cheap. I came up 44 years ago. I quit a good job building jet engines, sold everything and moved up in a Datsun pickup. I did odd jobs and lived in a dry cabin for almost a year. I then got a low paying job in the oil field. The next year I got a good job in the oil field using my electronics knowledge I gained in the military. Did that and went into telecommunications as a tech even doing some overseas work. I’m retired now and we have a nice energy efficient home I built and a off-road off grid place I build over 20 years ago.
@@northtoalaska2022 You will do great. I can tell you are a self starter and do things right. I used to spend a lot of time along the Kenai Peninsula coast. An old friend has a place north of discovery park and I’ve been to all the platforms in the inlet. I’ve done the Swan Lake canoe trail over a dozen times. My older brother ran charters out of Homer on weekends for years.
You guys have a lot of work ahead of you but you are young and will have little trouble doing it. Take your time on decision making for house location, good drainage away from home is important. Don't let yourself get burnt out and most of all have fun with your project. Stay safe and take care.
We did make a decision for our house, but it did take quite a bit of time and checked out the location every season change to make sure it was the best spot for it. We will definitely make time to have fun, too, so it isn't all work all the time😀

Hi guys, new subscriber here, starting at the beginning and binge watching to catch up! My first video was you developing your spring. Just a suggestion for spring is to line the area in front of the dam with medium size rock to form solid ground to walk on when servicing your collector box. Leaving it soft, you could produce a seep from a deep footprint and cause a washout under your dam.

Great walk through of the property. Genuinely looking forward to seeing all the things you will do to it/build on it. Three questions I am sure are also in the minds of other subscribers. 10 What is your first name? 2) Where were you guys before relocating to Alaska? 3) Is there any tool that Chris does not have? I am asking that question in retrospect after having watched every Vlog you have posted. It seems Chris always has the right tool for the job.
Thank you! We plan to keep making content to update our family and friends that are so far away, so more to come! We are Katie and Chris! Our old home was in Pennsylvania about 5000 miles away. We began searching for land in alaska in the early winter 2021 and then moved to alaska for good in October 2022. We have been gathering tools to complete jobs and projects for many years but Chris says that he still needs an excavator and a table saw, and then he will be happy with tools for a while 😅 thank you so much for all of your support and comments!

Yes! We built a chicken coop in the small part of the cabin. It is in one of our older videos. We also fixed up the large part enough to use it as a shed for now 🙂
How did you guys get all that stuff moved from PA (or did not all of it come from PA)? I see a motorhome, a large enclosed trailer, a pickup, a gooseneck flatbed, a gooseneck dump trailer, a skid loader, plus the side by side, you mentioned a Jeep and I'm sure there's more lol. Did you make multiple trips or do a convoy? I'm curious because I'll be making my journey from OH pretty soon, and I'm trying to determine what is the best way to make it all happen as reasonable as possible, both for time and financial standpoints.
We brought it all from Pennsylvania! We need to do a video on it, Chris drove the 40-foot motorhome with a basement full of belongings while hauling the 20-foot enclosed trailer loaded to 11,500 lbs. Both were a cgvw 44600 lbs. The dodge truck driven by katie hauled the gooseneck dump trailer with the can am placed on top of the gooseneck on custom-made carry rack we welded together for the trip. The skid steer and all attachments were in the bed of the dump trailer with gcvw 28800 lbs. That trip was made in October. Chris drove the truck back to Pennsylvania in February solo, unloaded no trailer, and brought back the second 30-foot deck over gooseneck with the jeep and more belongings totaling gcvw of 27k. We looked at all options. This was the most cost-effective way. To re purchase all of our belongings in alaska starting over or paying someone else to ship it all would have cost us a fortune vs just paying fuel and us doing the hauling. Highly recommend when moving to alaska bring everything you need if you are doing what we are. It will save you a lot of time and money even after fuel costs.
@northtoalaska2022 That makes sense, for sure. I've been all over the map trying to decide what would be the best scenario for me.... considering everything from buying and converting a bus, to buying a flatbed semi with a sleeper, a used Penske truck towing a camper, selling my truck and replacing it up there, multiple trips with multiple enclosed trailers and multiple trucks (drive up/fly back) etc. I think now I've decided on doing just a single one-way trip with my truck and an enclosed trailer. I have plenty of stuff (much less than you guys) but more tools than personal belongings. I'm also making the move with my 4 year old son, so he definitely affects all of it, too. We went through a very similar decision process, we almost bought a semi for the trip back in 2021 but then unexpectedly a very good deal came up on our motorhome down in Virginia so we made the leap on that fully intending to pack the inside like it was a box truck 😅 we ended up downsizing more and did not have to do that. The one great part about your enclosed trailer is that resale on them here is much higher than back east if you want to sell it when you get here, it is possible to recoup your purchase price aswell as fuel cost to get yourself here If it is a nice trailer.
