    Thanks, Kaelyn for being vulnerable and being yourself. It is so crucial to talk about the not-so-good things about doing a Ph.D. or running Businesses, being staunch, and being independent. You are evolving beautifully. You inspire🙂

    Thank you for being vulnerable. I find that doing a PhD is both the most fulfilling thing, and the hardest most anguishing experience. I'm so happy things are looking up now for you! (And I love A Discovery of Witches too!) ❤❤

    I’ve honestly been really surprised by how many branches of your businesses you have kept running given how much you have going on. I’m excited for you to be able to pour your mental energy into the things you are currently passionate about. Passions change and while I think it can be worth trying to reignite certain passions (like your PhD research), it’s also important to know when that phase of life it over.

    I literally cried watching this. So many of us have followed your journey for so long that I just feel crushed that I had no idea that you were suffering so much, and going through all of this. THANK YOU for showing up as your authentic self, because -- I think I speak for many of us when I say -- I am so glad you're in this space.

    Finding your passion for history in fiction reminds me of this quote from the Simon Leys, a China Scholar:
    "The fact is, these two arts - history writing and fiction writing - originating both in poetry, involve similar activities and mobilise the same faculties: memory and imagination; and this is why it could rightly be said that the novelist is the historian of the present and the historian the novelist of the past. Both must invent the truth."

    I loved to see you how passionate you got about your research! I’m in academia myself and this is the click that in my experience needs to happen (within myself or those I supervise) and then things start falling into place. It might still be difficult at times, but you made it your own and that’s what it’s all about. You can do this!!

    It's so lovely to hear you re-discover your love for history aagin. I went through a very similar thing with my philosophy PhD. I honestly think these experiences are there to make us really realise why we're doing what we're doing. It shouldn't be for anyone else, or even for our own egos, but simply because we are passionate and love the subject 💖💖💖 there is true joy in learning

    Definitely trust your gut. If what you're doing feels right, then keep on doing what you're doing. And I'm glad something as simple as reading that book helped reignite that spark in you. Having such a negative experience involving the archives sucks so bad, though. My heart goes out to you

    Thank you for posting this, it is so timely for me. You posted this video about 30 minutes after I finalized my decision to take the rest of the semester off of grad school to sort out everything else so that I can focus entirely on research next semester. As much as I know that this is the healthiest thing for me to do, that inherent "failure" feeling just sort of hangs there, so it really helps seeing other academics willing to show that they're also struggling and doubting themselves.

It's refreshing to hear you talk through some doubts and uncertainties because you do always seem 110% together. Just wanted to say how proud I am of you for putting yourself first! I can only imagine how hard it must have been to juggle everything that you do! I am also a PhD student (entering my fourth and "final" year 😅), and for me, the biggest friction I had with prioritizing my research was teaching. I absolutely LOVED teaching, but it took all of my energy from me and there were weeks where I wouldn't even look at my research. This fall, I had the opportunity to lead a class I had previously been TAing because the instructor was taking a sabbatical. It took *everything* in me to turn the opportunity down. I felt like I was letting everyone down, but I also knew I couldn't juggle both and that my research progress had already suffered long enough. Well, long story short, but this past summer I was diagnosed with ADHD and (fast forward to the fall) I am SO GLAD I am not teaching this year lol. It feels so good to focus on my research 🤩 Anyways, enough about me... So happy to hear that you are excited about your research and have lots of ideas for new content! Always, looking forward to following along ☺❤ Sending you all the best vibes~! 🙏✨

I think it's so easy as academics to feel isolated and question our place, motivations and skills as scholars. P.S. RUclips videos are generally about how great everything is, and how great the creator’s life is, so how refreshing to see something so honest. Big decisions, taken for the right reasons. We all come to those points occasionally, that’s a fact. I hope making this video has been as cathartic to you as it has been helpful to me - and other people as well, it would seem. Good luck with the next step - but please don’t stop making the content, it continues to be informative, interesting, and helpful.

    Crazy how much I resonated with this. I'm in a different flavor of the same situation. Entering the final year of my PhD and this summer I felt more lost and overworked than ever before. Having a serious bf for the first time really made me realize how much I had stretched myself thin. I also lost the motivation for my PhD and contemplated dropping out in the dark moments.
    I came to a lot of the same conclusions this September. I am going to finish my tutoring and swim lesson businesses at the end of this school year. The money isnt worth it. I was also praised for how much I could handle. I love making content too (on tt) and even though its less profitable it brings me so much joy.
    Heres to the new season for the both of us! More peace, less hustling, finishing our life dream of a PhD.

    This has resonated with me. I feel like ever since I had to return to the States after living in Scotland ( I got into my dream school the University of Edinburgh for my master's in art history.) I struggled to find a community and land work to immigrate to Scotland after the completion of my degree. I felt like I failed. I still have not found stable work in my field and that has been hard as well feeling as though I wasted my time. I am only now realizing I have been settling and not really accomplishing my studies for me or I somehow lost along the way why I started in the first place. I am only now getting back to my passion and searching for a Ph.D. program where I won't have to settle on my passions and ideas. You inspire me and it was refreshing to see the reality and the struggle.

I don't know you but I have been following you ardently since your days at Oxford (and seeing you go back was incredibly fun to "digitally" experience), but you are amazingly talented and just profoundly incredible. Thank you for being humble, open, and transparent, Kaelyn. I can relate to keeping the momentum regarding the PhD journey. Recently, I returned to my hometown temporarily to live with my mother and it has been an ADJUSTMENT. I went from hardly any people and noise pollution to being SURROUNDED by constant distractions. lol Sometimes you don't miss what you have until it is gone. My study does not require me to be location-dependent since it is online, it has been a very reflective time in my life. I don't know where I want to 'settle' upon completing my PhD program and to be honest I don't want to JUMP into a 'career' right away and hope to take a 3-month sabbatical. This video made me extra grateful for two people: (1) my mentor professor in undergrad. He saw how my fight with the school over their Title IX issues burnt me out and he asked me point blank to seriously consider whether I wanted to start grad school at that time or whether I should wait. He wanted to make sure I was moving forward for the right reasons and that helped wake me up a lot. (2) My major professor in grad school. She makes a safe space for me to talk about my imposter syndrome, my fears for my work, and any other mental blocks that make the work less enjoyable than it should be. She always reminds me why we're doing the work we do.
    Fellow Ph.D. student here just glad to hear that you're doing okay. Getting a Ph.D. is such a rough process that is full of doubt and fear. But we've got this!!!

    I appreciate your openness and commend your ambition. Knowing when to stop and pivot is so important to our wellness and health. You are special. I'm glad I found your channel trying to learn about Notion. I dropped out of college in 2015 because of the work study balance, I was going through the motions due to family pressure. I've had a job since I turned 16 years old. I'm 30 now. I worked at UPS for the previous 9 years and was "forced" to resign in July. I've managed to flourish through life's challenges after focusing on my mental health and becoming more discipline with my exercise. I dropped out of college once I discovered day trading.(forex) so i study finance and investing heavily. But truly i love reading so my library is diverse. I love learning from wise, creative, healthy people. I could go on but i don't know how to type an essay, lol. I also admire the ambition you promote. thank you for sharing. KEEP GOING!

    Hi, Kaelyn. Deaf MA student here - just moved to the UK for my studies! I absolutely adore your content here and on Instagram! I've been using live captioning via Google Chrome but recently started finding it more difficult to track along. Would you consider captioning your videos so deaf and hard-of-hearing students and academics can be part of this wonderful community?

      Are RUclips captions available to you? I find them pretty accurate.

    • @anasophw
      @anasophw 8 месяцев назад

      At the time I commented the automated RUclips captions weren't available, but it appears that now they are! Sometimes when they aren't available, it is usually easier for the creator to use captioning software of some sort instead which makes for much better viewing. Plus the automatic captions are not the most reliable with background noise and multi-syllable words :( @@darinapetrovsky8450

    Do you have any recommendations for anyone that does one on one consulting for admissions? Or who someone looking into applying for Masters/Ph.D programs at Ivy League schools should contact (e.g. would you recommend contacting a professor or the admissions department at said school, or should someone avoid that and contact someone different entirely)?

    Good update, Kaelyn! It is good to hear that you regularly reflect on who you are being and what you're doing. It is wonderful that you are gaining victories by facing down those things and people who would try to take your power. Creating a writing group is one of the things I, too, encourage my doctoral students to do. I'm so glad you are using that resource for yourself. Keep going! You can do this! ~Dr. X

    Thankyou for the video. You have a writing group? How does it work?

    • @KaelynGraceApple
      @KaelynGraceApple  8 месяцев назад

      Accepted Society (accepted.community/) hosts live pomodoro study sessions 2-3 times a day monday-thursday and a writing group on fridays! The writing group meets at the beginning to check in and discuss how our projects/research are coming along and then we have a 1.5hr dedicated writing session with a check in at the end as well :) It's a great way to meet academics across disciplines and across various geographies and make progress on any dedicated writing project you may have (academic or otherwise)

    I’m glad things are going well for you 😊 I understand that having a youtube channel and businesses linked to it comes with feeling like you have to go into a more detailed explanation about, for instance, closing down your consulting services than other business owners (since I assume that many of your clients have found them through this channel). However, it sounds like you’ve been under quite a lot of pressure from people commenting on your videos to justify decisions or share parts of your life such as your personal relationships. Whether you choose to live on your own or with your partner is frankly nobody’s business but your own, and comments urging you to do one or the other to prove how independent you are are inappropriate and actually quite weird. Please continue to share only whatever it is that you feel like sharing

    Question, would you consider selling the business or have someone take it over? The reason I say this is because Ive never seen another company that helps people get into grad school.

    • @KaelynGraceApple
      @KaelynGraceApple  8 месяцев назад +1

      I considered it and a variety of options but have decided that to sell would mean I would always feel some connection and responsibility for it. I want a clean slate. I, however, am keeping the course and the essay guides available so that resource can continue helping people apply to grad school

    I'm glad you are prioritizing your needs and being more careful with your time. Running Accepted Consulting always seemed to take so much out of you and took up so much of your time. I often wondered how you managed to do it all. I love your content and learning about your research (I love academic research) and I always look forward to more of your videos. I wish you all the best and the best mental health state plus good work/life balance.

    Love this. As someone who found your account and is not a PhD or pursuing one at all, I still enjoyed your content. I'm someone who likes to learn and I've channeled a lot of that into more of a creative career, and I think you'll find a way to prioritize your content and do the things you love, maybe in a more visual way. You've been doing amazing things, and the sincerity with which you've even announced these decisions shows just how important these things are to you, but also how you've evolved as a person. We all do. 🤍
