This video really shows off some of the best shoot 'em ups for the NES. 😎 Gun-Nac is easily my favourite. It's such a solid shooter in all areas. Over Horizon is also really nice with detailed graphics and catchy music. Star Soldier is a really old school shooter but it plays well and looks good. Two other great NES shooters are Crisis Force and Parodius. Crisis force is almost 16-bit quality with stunning graphics. Parodius is a really nice version of the classic arcade game.
I had a Amiga during the 8-bit console era so completely missed this and the SMS. I was surprised how good the shmups are on both systems! Really impressive for 8-bit 👍🏻
@@Lucasrainford I had a Master System for a couple of years, then sold it. I got an Amiga for Xmas 1989. Then I managed to buy a second hand NES with a bundle of games for £60 in 1990. I was surprised by how great a lot of NES games were, even if they didn't have all the colours and fancy effects of Amiga games. I then sold the NES a couple of years later and forgot about 8-bit gaming. But then many years later, I bought a NES to add to my retro collection. I have a few games but also an Everdrive with every game. Everdrives make using retro consoles much more fun and save a fortune.
@@kingstonlj I've never used one but from what I gather those Everdrives and similar tech sound awesome! Playing on og hardware with all the games available is a great concept obvs if you don't mind not having all the boxed games oh and lots of cash to collect em all! ;)
@@Lucasrainford I will say that emulation is fine. Some people act like emulation doesn't look or feel 100% authentic, but I reckon it's at least 99% perfect. I did a comparison with Super Mario Kart and the graphics and music seemed exactly the same. Using real hardware obviously feels totally authentic and you get to use the controller made for the machine, but then you have to make sure they're outputting RGB for a decent image. Not only that -- but making it look nice on an LCD screen requires a scaler that costs over £100. So emulation is a much easier and far more practical option. You save loads of money and you can easily upscale the games to look really nice on a big modern screen. I'm more than happy to use emulation most of the time. A big thumbs up to all the clever coders who make emulating old systems possible. 😎
@@kingstonlj Spot on! Some of the work that’s been done to get these emulators working is fantastic! Never fails to impress me. I’m currently trying out Switch emulation, vid coming soon 👍🏻
Why put those early shump games in the list, there are still some better shumps, example thunderbird, thundercade, twin cobra, adventure of dino riki, burai fighter, image fight, legendary wings, starship hector, twin eagle, zombie nation, zanac , sky shark and stinger. I did not mention those imports from Japan
As I stated in the info this was my first time with the NES so I went for games I was familiar with like Gradius, Defender, Galaga etc. Maybe I'll make another NES vid? I've discovered lots more since I made it and will deffo check out the games you mentioned, cheers 👍
Life force is fucking ridiculous. Ive been playing that every night for about a half an hour and im so bad i dont even get better. But i still have fun and the music is outstanding. I cant wait to have my X68000 rebuilt so i can play Salamander or oife force as its called here, and Nemeis 90 Kai. Thatll be some hair pulling hard times. Ive never been into the NES much. I was always a sega guy. But im getting more into it over time
@@Lucasrainford I do. And it's cool when it works. They are picky and expensive. And the games usually mold. And the peripherals are expensive. And it's tough to set up.
From a European perspective we must admit NES was not a shmup system. Tried Ebay, but nothing can be bought here or at insane prices, so there probably was no official EU cart for most of these. Strange, as the PC Engine was not big here either, but there is an abundance of PC Engine shmups in the European markte today. Also one of the best IMO, Gyruss, had the music ruined. No idea why it had to be the Sky version of tocatta. The Ardade version is much nicer with its darker arrangement.
@@colonelkomarov622 Somehow the French got along quite well with Japanses. The Sega systems did much better here than in the US. France was the reason behind the CoreGrafx as it was the PC Engine redesign for SCART TV's.
@@2kBofFun yes they did a scart for nes and pc engine for french market because it was a condition for sell products in france, but most of the games came 3/4 years later, and only few of nintendo came, sega had luck because nintendo and nec ignored the euro market, and for sure nec did the biggest mistake to focus us market than european market who was much more japanese compatible with anime, manga etc... and if pc engine came in france, it was only because french businessman imported by themselves.
Can't you just post a list dude, here is some favor for the others: 1943 Defender II Dragon Spirit Fantasy Zone Galaga Gradius Gun NAC Gyruss Horizon Life Force Scat Silk Worm Starforce Star Soldier Guardian Legend

and yeah Dragon Spirit and Galaga takes the cake from these, even the music is terrible in most and they are punishing asf some not even enjoyable these days with so many shumup alternatives why torturing yourself
Instead of starforce, star solidier, defender or galaga who were very boring primitive games, games like recca, gradius 2, abadox, crisis force or falsion could have been better choice as best schmup
I didn't state they was the best just some 'top' (great) ones I'd discovered having had no experience with the NES back in the day. Since this vid I've played Recca which is class! Gradius 2 is nice too, I'm a big fan of the series. I'll check out those other games you mentioned, cheers
My favorite was Super Spy Hunter. I replayed that game a lot.
Gradius and Life Force gave me enjoyable hours. 1943 was another favorite of mine.
gyrus was an awesome game man the best shoot em up ive ever played for nes

Parodius ?

Could the Shmups on the NES be superior to the shmups on the SNES?
I suppose there are some, it's all subjective though :)

Europe was ignored by japanese, we didn't exists for them, they only focused on US market ...
