  • We added one crucial piece of homemade fresh apple cider making equipment to our arsenal....a fruit grinder / crusher from Roots & Harvest. We ordered this stainless steel masher from Home Depot (not available through amazon) and it has already made our lives 1000 times easier. All you do is throw in your whole apples and rotate the handle! This video shows our first trial batch with some wild apples we picked. After mashing and grinding up the apple pulp we begin pressing it for the homemade juice. Then we add yeast and turn it into Hard Cider by fermenting it! You can look forward to seeing us grind a lot more apples when we are able to purchase 20 bushel bins from a local orchard in the coming weeks. If you have any DIY questions, please feel free to reach out. We love interacting with the community and getting to know our audience. Happy Cider Making! How to Make Cider! Cider from Scratch! We started the same way but hand cranking gets old very very fast. We ended up getting a Speidel mill. 220V and it eats a bushel in about ten seconds. We enjoy watching you get started - we are a couple years ahead of you and still learning. Good luck! (Jeff in upstate NY)

Everyone has to start somewhere right :) we thought about the getting an electric mill and hydraulic press but we don’t quite have the apples for those yet!! Hopefully very soon! Thanks for watching - we love hearing from other folks in the industry

I’ve been using a gas powered wood chipper. Works great.

Wow thats a really good idea. Is it hard to clean? Have you used it for anything other than apples/fruit?

Coming from making mead, GoFerm is not a fermenting nutrient. It is meant to be used in your yeast rehydrant solution. Fernand O, Fernand K, DAP, yeast hulls (kind of) would be nutrients you would add. GoFerm has nutrients, but is not meant to be used as a fermentation nutrient.

Hi there! Yes you are correct, GoFerm is a yeast rehydration nutrient :) In smaller, one gallon batches, we like to add the GoFerm straight into the carboy so it doesn't clump up in the rehydration solution. Traditional fermentation nutrients are actually toxic to the yeast prior to the start of fermentation. Happy Cider Making

It's hard to believe I was that young and dumb, but I was.... get an electric motor and be done with it. You get what you pay for...cheap is just that, cheap.

I wouldn’t say dumb, maybe young and motivated. We aren’t scared of a little manual labor. 💪🏻 💪🏻 Everyone starts somewhere :)
