Me, originally from the Jersey Shore arrived in Fürth/Nuremberg back in the summer of 93'. Met my German Frau in January 94' tied the knot in 96', was the last three MPs to close Darby Kaserne in late 95' before we moved up to Schweinfurt for my last year serving. During the heyday's of the US Army in the AO the late 80s, we numbered over 40,000 or more in Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, Herzo Base, Schwabach AO. I'm still here helping raising our kids 27 km northwest of Nuremberg. On a clear day, I walk out to the highest point outside my village and look south to the tallest structure, the TV/Radio communication tower in South Nuremberg. I try to get to Nuremberg once a year, soccer (1.FCN), Volksfest, riding my bike or a train connection. My last time was back in April when I had a train connection in Nuremberg with my daughter and niece (NJ) who I took to Vienna and Bratislava. The memories of the people who came and gone in my life during my 5 years serving....3,5 of it in Bavaria. Have you ever tried a Pfefferkarpfen before? Lebkucken schmeckt immer lecker. Safe Travels. Prost und schöne Grüße aus Mittelfranken.
Love your story!! Thank you so much for sharing and thank you for your service!! We have not tried Pfefferkarpfen but we do hope to be back sometime soon. Cheers!!🍻
Each Saturday morning I enjoy your videos. Such a nice way to start the weekend. Love that you’re in Germany. I took some of my students there summers for several years. Have you tried Brötchen for breakfast? They’re addictive. So good. 😊
Thank you so much for following along with us. We very much appreciate your support each week! It really does mean a lot. We unfortunately did not try Brotchen. We love getting recommendations like this, but we are just moving too fast. By the time we get one, we are off to the next destination. 😐
Nice video. Nurnburg is one of my favorite German cities. Been there multiple times. Glad you enjoyed it. Good restaurant choice. There are many excellent traditional ones there.
Another great video.😊 I was just in Passau. Bavarian beer truly lives up to all the hype. Combine a cold Bavarian beer in an ice cold ceramic mug and a plate of schnitzel in a traditional beer garden, mmm Bavarian Paradise!
Great video. Nice to get a preview of Nürnberg. I will be there in one week! First time visiting Germany. 👍 Looking forward to trying the beer, pretzels, gingerbread and Jäegermeister.
Wow, thank you so much ♥. This will go a long way and helps us continue to do what we are doing. We truly appreciate your support of our channel. Cheers 🍻
Nuremberg is such a lovely place to visit, we were there in 2005 on our Grand European cruise with Viking from Amsterdam to Vienna. We are going back in December for a Christmas Markets cruise starting in Prague for 3 days and then on the boat in Nuremberg and on to Budapest. Really looking forward to it although it will be a bit cold for sure.
That will be an absolutely beautiful time of year to visit those areas - even though a bit chilly! We really hope to return in the next year or two and enjoy the Christmas markets as well. Cheers!!
I know you guys don't like to spend money, but the Albrect Durer house was worth the nominal fee. We loved Nuremburg, we were just there this past April, just two days and it was way too short.
Good to know, Tammy. One of our issues with fast travel is we have limited time in each place and tend to miss things like the Albrecht Durer House. We will be doing a video on our upcoming 2024 travels in a few months. For now, we will be touring Italy and Turkey to complete the year.
Well, you found the best brewery in town 😊 For the Lebkuchen, you could have chosen something much better. But for the one day you made the most out of my home town.

It is great that you traveled to Romania and Serbia. We loved Romania but didn't get as much time in Serbia to really get a real feel for that country. Georgia is on our list, but it will have to wait. Our yearly budget is already maxed out!! Thank you for watching and supporting the channel!! Cheers!!🍻

That's really hard to say, as they offer something quite different. Prague has much more to see and do but is also much more touristy. But in the end, if we had to choose one, we would choose Prague to visit. Thankfully this time, Brian's Jagermeister experience went down without issue 😂. Thanks so much for watching!! Cheers 🍻

Great stuff as usual. We lived about 3 hours west of Nuremberg when I was age 1-5, probably where I developed my own fear of heights (Landstuhl Castle was nearby). Hello, it's me again !! This is the second video of ours that I have watched and it was so much fun to watch. Safe travels and see you in the next video :) !!!!!!
Found you guys while searching for health insurance option for early retirement, have since hopped on your journey. Your videos have certain appeal that glues me in, perhaps just two likable people doing interesting and down to earth travel? How do you stay healthy while literally eating out all the time?
We try to eat in as much as possible. We are typically in one spot for a month, so going to the grocery store and eating at home is what we prefer. Thank you for watching and for the kind words!! Cheers!!🍻
Beautiful place even without all the colorful buildings of other European areas which I prefer. Some of those cobblestones looked treacherous. Thanks for another good video. Kathleen
This video brings back many fond memories of walking around Nuremberg. The castle views are well worth the walk up and price. You didn’t try the Nuremberg sausages (smaller finger sausages) that the area is known for. Plenty of WWII sites too like the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and museum. Beers vary depending on the area you are visiting. The bready pretzels in Germany are excellent. Thanks for sharing Germany.
Hi, Robert. The Nuremberg sausages were the ones that we had with the sauerkraut. They have to be a certain length, not too big and not too small, finger size. We wish we could have spent another day going to the museums but didn't have time. We did have a great time while we were there, we were just moving too fast to see everything that we should be.
Another excellent video! Those sausages, gingerbread and schnitzel were making me drool! I’m so glad Brian was as brave as that 5 year old old boy climbing the tower. 🤣😂. I love how he compares the price of everything to how much a beer cost. 🤣😂. Beautiful city! Safe travels.
I watched the video about Czech Prague that you presented. I will travel to Prague. Thank you for your question. I hope you talk about prices in Germany. This is very important.
A great advantage of Prague is that it is built in a style so influenced by German culture that one can get an impression of what German cities looked like before they were destroyed in this unspeakable war. I myself, was in Bohemia and Prague, 5 times. The first 2 times as a very young man, before the fall of the iron curtain...
Nuremberg with it's mideval Flair is a lovely City to visit. Are you planning to visit other cities in Germany. I come from Hqmburg in the North, also a lovely City with lots of history and with the ICE train, only a short distance away
We loved that medieval feel of the city ☺. We also visited Munich, and that video will be out next week. We do plan to return again and explore much more. Cheers!!
Glad to see you guys reaching Germany. Nuremburg was a surprise for me as to why you guys chose there but I do love their old town, especially that picturesque street. How does the beer there compare to the Czech Republic? Happy vlogging guys!
Hi, John. We chose Nuremberg because it made sense logistically from where we were at and where we were going. The beer in each location is very good! It would be difficult to decide which is better. 🍻
Great video. Love your content. Quick question, it seems like you are moving faster between countries for this set of trips. Have you adjusted your budget up or are you just managing the 90 days in the Schengen zone?
Adjusting our time is a good way of saying it. It is also hard to find inexpensive accommodations in the summer months, so we decided to move a little faster. We are now back into our slow travel for the next several months. We will address this in an upcoming video. 😀 Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!🍻
Hi Brian and Carrie! We are huge fans and absolutely love your style! We are close to retiring and can’t wait to get travelling - your videos are invaluable! BTW my husband is now obsessed with “2 Thirsty”! 😅 Kelly and Jay (Victoria Bc)
Hi Kelly and Jay! You live so close to our home ☺, I love Victoria! So happy to hear you enjoy our videos and find them helpful, that is what inspires us to continue doing what we are doing. It's always 2-Thirsty 😉
Within 5 minutes into the video I lost count how many times Brian said beer.... hahaha 😂. And appears to me German foods were made just so they go with the beer. Thank you so much for sharing. Happy journey!
That depends a lot on the area... 200 km further west, in the Rhine/Main area with Frankfurt (5th largest city) in the center, people drink a lot more cider, in addition to the usual beer consumption. The alcohol content is similar to beer, but you can add seltzer water or lemonade to the cider, which is very nice. You can also drink the cider hot in winter, very similar to the mulled wine known from Christmas markets. Here the advantage is very clear, because the hot cider contains less than half the alcohol than the usual mulled wine. And while we're on the hot subject... Unlike beer, cider is the ideal refreshing drink on hot summer days. Anyone who has ever spent a hot day at the quarry lake and was unwise enough to pour down several beers understands what I mean. And it is precisely for the reasons mentioned that the Hessian cuisine has developed more around apple wine than the otherwise typical German dishes that go well with beer, which of course can also be found in Frankfurt. As mentioned at the beginning... It depends on the region!
Always great to see my beloved hometown through the eyes of visitors. And I am glad that you didn't step into too many tourist traps! I would have recommended other Bratwürste and Lebkuchen, but you found a good brewery. Edit: Next time being in Nuremberg or Franconia try our "national dish" - it's called Schäuferla! :D
The white plate on the ginger bread is called " Oblate". You get that plates in a smaller size in the catholic church. It's a relict from the monks, I guess.
I live in Nürnberg and I ❤ Nürnberg Couldn't say it better 👍 Try the historical ,henker stadtführung' where you can follow the hangman of Nürnberg to the spooky parts of the midieval town in the darkness Really fun!
Thank you, Thomas! It's so nice to get positive feedback from people who live in locations where we video. We very much appreciate the support. Cheers!!🍻
The City Tour is called ,Nürnberg Ghostwalk', you can follow the hangman to the spooky parts of the medieval town in the darkness That's what I appreciate to you 😉
For the Streetname: Most of the german streetnames (in the old city centers) have their names from the former craftsman workshops which was located there in old times. The Weißgerbergasse means (if you split it in 3 words wich built this name) White (Weiß) tanner (Gerber) alley (Gasse) White tanning is a tanning process in which the tanning is effected with minerals, such as alum or common salt. white tanning, also called mineral tanning, produces a particularly light, almost white leather. White tanning was mainly used for finer and thinner leathers of calf, sheep and goat. Often there was more than one of these workshops and before streetnames and building numbers that was the way to find your way through the city (by shopdistricts or often by smelling for example bleeching clothes (smells terrible) or bei POI like old Inns or Pubs or different Soldierplaces (watch - from Watchtower in german: Wacht means Guard) so you had different districts for orientation greetings from germany
As much as we love beer, we do limit ourselves regularly. Too much of a good thing is too much!! 😀 Thank you so much for watching our channel! Cheers!!🍻
hi, I'm Stefan from Nuremberg. Thanks for your interest. May I answer a few words to your question? Like almost all larger German cities, Nuremberg was almost completely destroyed during WW2. It was 95% in ruins. At 10:55 you can roughly see this in the picture. After WW2, due to a lack of building materials, a lot of buildings were reconstructed from the old stones. A number of buildings consist of old foundation walls that have been rebuilt but true to the original. It took many, many years. BrianandCarrie gave my hometown a wonderful video. I think almost they love our historic places as much as I THAAAAAAANK YOOOOOUUUU for that
Did you turn the golden ring on the market fountain (der Schöne Brunnen)? That market square is a functioning market. You just caught it on an off day. It’s not really gingerbread. It’s made of a nut dough.
You should have gotten the Elisenlebkuchen, that’s the original that’s only made with nuts. The one you had is made with wheat. It tastes good but not as good as Elisenlebkuchen 🙂
I live around 45 minutes away from Nuremberg :) What I really love about the city is that it is beautiful, but its also good to live there, enjoy it as a "local" and to be able to enjoy the city without HUGE masses of tourists. :) Sometimes if you live in a very beautiful touristy area you cant really enjoy livign there because there are so many people and everything is cenetered around tourism. I always feel "bad" for locals when going on vacation in Italy. Especially smaller cities. :D Do you guys know what I mean?
Absolutely! In some of the small, little towns that we have visited you always wonder how the locals deal with the tourists? We are mindful to be respectful. I think we even mentioned it in a video coming out in a couple of weeks.
White Tanners Street in case you wondered what the street name meant. ß is not a b, it is a triple s. Tanner=Gerber, Taylor=Schneider, Cobbler=Schuhmacher, Smith=Schmidt/Schmied/Schmiedt/Schmitt, Sherriff or Mayor=Schulz/Schultheiß, Bowyer=Bogner, Archer=Schütz/Bogenschütz, and many more.
Thanks for the video! Many restaurants in Bavaria will serve you a free Jagermeister after your meal as a digestif. But only if you are older than 3. :o)
🎉 To share I think I the University of Austin there's a map database and you can see the regions of Germany that were lost during the last 500 years. And this includes the schlessia region that became part of Poland when Russia annexed it. That's where my grandmother's family was from. Actually since you're in Europe I think it includes much of Europe going back hundreds of years.
We will be in Italy so won't be able to do Octoberfest. The prices skyrocket over that time period so we have to move on. Maybe someday soon! Cheers!!🍻
Americans, Japanese and Chinese are actually the best tourists in Germany, they like everything, taste everything, everything is incredible. The others are always nagging, the train is late, people smoke everywhere, toilets cost money, everything is closed on Sundays. etc. Stay the way you are.
We did, the unfortunate thing about moving so fast is that we have to pick and choose what we see. We will be getting back to slow travel when we arrive in Italy. 🍻
It was unseasonably cool the entire time that we were in the region. We experienced more rain in July than we do when we are back home in Bellingham, WA.
While I do love everything in your videos, I must say that sometimes I do forward to the food/beer parts. Especially the beer parts. Don't hate me!! Prost.
what You tried was Lebkuchen ...... -" Lebkuchen are a traditional German cookie given as gifts at Christmas that date back to the 1300's. - Very similar to gingerbread but much darker, more dense and rich, and chewier. Lebkuchen is never crunchy. - Made with honey, whereas gingerbread uses molasses.

Kathleen
Yes, those cobblestones can get you!! Thank you Kathleen for watching and commenting. We appreciate the support. ❤
@@BrianandCarrie I stand corrected on the sausages. It looked like bratwurst, but they looked tasty.
Thank you, guys, for always watching and commenting on our channel!! We very much appreciate the support!!
Cheers!!🍻
I watched the video about Czech Prague that you presented. I will travel to Prague. Thank you for your question. I hope you talk about prices in Germany. This is very important.
Thank you for watching our channel! We will have our cost break down video out in a few weeks. We will show how much money we spent in each location.
You could take free walking tours in every city! Its fun!
Nuremberg looks beautiful! Definitely adding it to our list of places to visit.
Cool video! As a Nuremberg resident, I'm happy that you stopped at Altstadthof for a beer, and not one of the generic places at the Hauptmarkt :)
Thank you!! We liked Altstadthof so much we went twice in two days!! 😀
Cheers!!🍻
Great video. Love your content. Quick question, it seems like you are moving faster between countries for this set of trips. Have you adjusted your budget up or are you just managing the 90 days in the Schengen zone?
Adjusting our time is a good way of saying it. It is also hard to find inexpensive accommodations in the summer months, so we decided to move a little faster. We are now back into our slow travel for the next several months. We will address this in an upcoming video. 😀 Thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!🍻
Would love to visit Germany! Enjoyed the video. Have never seen Schnitzel stuffed with ham. Would love to give it a try!
We really enjoyed Germany. We would love to come back over Christmas!
@@BrianandCarrie Christmas in Germany would be amazing!!!!!
Nice video. Hope you enjoyed my hometown!
We did! We need to get back to Germany and spend more time.
Hi Brian and Carrie! We are huge fans and absolutely love your style! We are close to retiring and can’t wait to get travelling - your videos are invaluable! BTW my husband is now obsessed with “2 Thirsty”! 😅
Kelly and Jay
(Victoria Bc)
Hi Kelly and Jay! You live so close to our home ☺, I love Victoria! So happy to hear you enjoy our videos and find them helpful, that is what inspires us to continue doing what we are doing. It's always 2-Thirsty 😉
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you again. Can’t wait to see your Italy videos! Enjoy!
Hi team, where did you stay at Nuremberg? I couldn't see anything in the description. Keep at it, looks awesome fun.
Hi! In Nuremberg we stayed at the Leonardo Royal Hotel - great location!!
My favorite beer drinking couple!
Beautiful place, I’m glad to hear that Brian survive going up and down in that tower 🤣
It's all about survival, Elena! 😆
@@BrianandCarrie, Lol…how was the weather?
It was warm enough, (70s) but we were dodging the rain most of July. We are in Italy now and it is hot!!
@@BrianandCarrie, nice!!… is hot in here too
Even though you don't use a gimbal, your productions are very smooth. Cheers.
Roger
Thank you, Roger! 🍻
A video on your upcoming travel plans would be nice.
Within 5 minutes into the video I lost count how many times Brian said beer.... hahaha 😂. And appears to me German foods were made just so they go with the beer. Thank you so much for sharing. Happy journey!
HAHA!! 😆 We didn't even plan it that way! 🍻
Great couple - love your content around asia where I love to go. If you come to Scotland please let me know. Thank you xx
We will make our way to Scottland as soon as we can. So many places on our list and Scottland is on the list!!
Keep going and success will come one day❤
Thanks - life is good!! Cheers 🍻
Nuremberg was a wonderful city, we really loved our time there! We will be sure to try Schäuferla next time we visit. Cheers 🍻
Thanks for another great video. You forgot to show us the pretzels before you ate them😅
This is why we don't do food videos 😂 😂....we get too excited and dig in before thinking of the camera. Cheers!!
The white plate on the ginger bread is called " Oblate". You get that plates in a smaller size in the catholic church. It's a relict from the monks, I guess.
I think your very nice people. My father was German. So,,, I like these quality German videos… Michael Knudsen
Thank you for watching, Michael!
Cheers!!🍻
I live in Nürnberg and I ❤ Nürnberg
Couldn't say it better 👍
Try the historical ,henker stadtführung' where you can follow the hangman of Nürnberg to the spooky parts of the midieval town in the darkness
Really fun!
Thank you, Thomas! It's so nice to get positive feedback from people who live in locations where we video. We very much appreciate the support.
Cheers!!🍻
The City Tour is called ,Nürnberg Ghostwalk', you can follow the hangman to the spooky parts of the medieval town in the darkness
That's what I appreciate to you 😉
For the Streetname: Most of the german streetnames (in the old city centers) have their names from the former craftsman workshops which was located there in old times. The Weißgerbergasse means (if you split it in 3 words wich built this name) White (Weiß) tanner (Gerber) alley (Gasse)
White tanning is a tanning process in which the tanning is effected with minerals, such as alum or common salt. white tanning, also called mineral tanning, produces a particularly light, almost white leather. White tanning was mainly used for finer and thinner leathers of calf, sheep and goat.
Often there was more than one of these workshops and before streetnames and building numbers that was the way to find your way through the city (by shopdistricts or often by smelling for example bleeching clothes (smells terrible) or bei POI like old Inns or Pubs or different Soldierplaces (watch - from Watchtower in german: Wacht means Guard) so you had different districts for orientation
greetings from germany
Good to know! Thank you for adding this to the channel, we love it!!
What’s the name of the traditional restaurant that you went? Thanks
The name of the restaurant is in the video at 15:30. Thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!🍻
Love your travel videos. But how much beer do you guys drink in a month? German wines from the Mosel region are wonderful.
As much as we love beer, we do limit ourselves regularly. Too much of a good thing is too much!! 😀 Thank you so much for watching our channel!
Cheers!!🍻
What...? They were in Franconia, with also outstanding wines...
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 thanks for the info
Wait... I thought you were a German, aren't you?@@jimd2343
thanks for your great video. Were the architecture built after WW2, or they were there before the war?
Good question, what we were told is the construction was spared during the war. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers 🍻
hi, I'm Stefan from Nuremberg.
I think almost they love our historic places as much as I
THAAAAAAANK YOOOOOUUUU for that
thanks @@stefanw.5200
Great video. Where are you staying in italia?
We are mostly staying in Florance and Palermo with a few stops in between. We will be in Italy for almost 2 months.
Did you turn the golden ring on the market fountain (der Schöne Brunnen)? That market square is a functioning market. You just caught it on an off day. It’s not really gingerbread. It’s made of a nut dough.
We did spin the golden ring!! 😀
Tanner=Gerber, Taylor=Schneider, Cobbler=Schuhmacher, Smith=Schmidt/Schmied/Schmiedt/Schmitt, Sherriff or Mayor=Schulz/Schultheiß, Bowyer=Bogner, Archer=Schütz/Bogenschütz, and many more.
Thanks for the video! Many restaurants in Bavaria will serve you a free Jagermeister after your meal as a digestif. But only if you are older than 3. :o)
It really wasn't as bad as I had remembered. I could get used to a after dinner digestive!
Love it....
Are you guys going to Oktoberfest in Munich next month?
We will be in Italy so won't be able to do Octoberfest. The prices skyrocket over that time period so we have to move on. Maybe someday soon!
Cheers!!🍻
Fun fact... Some types of half timbered houses are constructed, to can to be moved...
We did not know that!! Very cool, thank you for adding that fun fact!!! 😀
Top
Americans, Japanese and Chinese are actually the best tourists in Germany, they like everything, taste everything, everything is incredible. The others are always nagging, the train is late, people smoke everywhere, toilets cost money, everything is closed on Sundays. etc. Stay the way you are.
What month are you traveling in Germany? It doesn’t look that warm by what people are wearing.
We were actually there in late July, it rained and was in the low 70s most of the time. We have arrived in Italy and it is now in the high 90s!! 😳
I see you skipped all the WWII history. The museum and the courthouse are very interesting.
We did, the unfortunate thing about moving so fast is that we have to pick and choose what we see. We will be getting back to slow travel when we arrive in Italy. 🍻
Why you didn't try Schäufele ? That's a traditional dish of Nuernberg
We had a great time! We may need to go back someday. Thank you for watching.
Cheers.
I was there about 24 years ago. Looks the same! 😂
Spider-Man at 16:00…WTH? 😂
I think gingerbread isn't the same like Nürnberger Lebkuchen. It doesn't even contain ginger
Did you go to beer cellar ? You should. HISTORIC ROCK CUT CELLARS
We did not go to the beer cellar. We just ran out of time to do everything that we had wanted to.
❤❤❤
2:35 The main square has been more beautiful, but Nürmberg has been heavily destroyed in WWII, not everything could be rebulilt
It looks like the weather is much cooler than the 100°+ here in Texas. Jealous
It was unseasonably cool the entire time that we were in the region. We experienced more rain in July than we do when we are back home in Bellingham, WA.
16:01 SPIDER-MAN!!! 🕷🕸🧍♂️
So funny! We had to go back and watch it because we had no idea what viewers were talking about!
@BrianandCarrie That's hilarious! 🤣 So random, but I thought it was a fun Easter egg!
I was waiting for someone to mention Spider-Man. 😊.
While I do love everything in your videos, I must say that sometimes I do forward to the food/beer parts. Especially the beer parts.
Don't hate me!!
Prost.
Thats ok! Those are the best parts!!! 😂
Cheers!!🍻
what You tried was Lebkuchen ......
Nürnberg...
