As a dark skinned woman, I’ve been always bullied by my friends, relatives, unknown people and many others. Even my 5 year old nephew used to call me “you are so crow-like dark”. My relatives often used to tell my mom (who is fair), “why is your daughter so dark?” or sometimes, “is this your daughter? Why is she like this?” I never understood at that age what “like this” means. But I was sure it meant something really bad. My mom always had a pain in her that her daughter is dark skinned. When I was teenager, I wanted to wear three-quarter pants, and told my dad to buy me one. My dad said, “don’t wear three-quarter pants, those only look good on fair skinned people”. While playing role-playing games at school, my friends wanted me to play ugly looking characters roles, because “oh it will suit you, you have black skin”. Being a girl suffering from social anxiety and being an introvert, I never knew how to reply back to them. Any of them. Imagine the pain!
Shit, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I can relate to some of that stuff too. Since I'm dark skin guy. It harms one's self esteem. I've made it a point to ignore these comments.

Our society ni pelik. Hitam salah, putih pun salah. My siblings and I were born with very fair skin, and some people at school asked me why my skin is pucat, call me zombie lah whatsover. And yeah sometimes my self-esteem became so low and i started to join most of the extra co-curricular activities and sports to get darker skin but still the same. Merah tanned kejap then kembali cerah. Benda sama during the interview, the interviewers underestimate me because of my skin colour sebab my job sometimes need to work under the Sun tengah panas. Agreed. Malays today want to look as pale as Koreans although logically they live in a temperate country while we live at the equator which is quite hot and exposed to higher UV radiation. Therefore folks, we need more melanin, the dark pigment of our skin to protect our skin from the radiation but now you're exposing yourself to higher risk of skin cancer and who knows how dangerous the chemicals you body has absorbed from the skin bleaching

Omg its so truee la. My friends have been around and keep commenting abt their skin colours, they are malays anyways. So this person complained she was dark bcs she rode motorcycles to work, so she gut sunburn but you know what, honestly she wasnt dark AT ALL. She also said she was ugly bcs she wasn't fair etc. She was also a beauty products freak! And my other friend who was fair as well, keep wearing everything to defend her skin from the sunlight, the reason was "I'll look ugly when I'm dark" like bitch what. The effect of the sunburn is temporary and she can be fair again (p/s: she and me work at the same place while waiting for spm result). Lastly, my friend, she is slightly darker than all of us, she was always insecure abt her skin colour and ask for beauty products from my other 2 friends to make her fairer. I hate to see her to feel that insecure. I don't like n i don't want to toot my own horn but I'm the fairest among them all and even this old chinese lady who stopped by my stall said I could be a chinese with my skin like this and people always commenting on how pale my skin was and there was also times my schoomates (also my juniors) said they'd rather be dark than being pale like dead ones. Oh my.. They had really nothing to say when actually they keep wanting "fair" skin! Hey aunties, uncles, ladies and gentlemen out there, everybody is beautiful honestly. I have been so uncomfortable when ppl liking my skin colour and make others feel so insecure. I feel so bad to make them feel this way. im here not too seeking attention or being show off . im not white but im not too dark (you can imagine right) . i care very much of my hygiene and skin health so my skin is clear , flawless , soft .. no whitehead no pimple no oily and blablabla but people always curse my skin colour because my older sister is white why im not . my older sister punya skin kusam , jeragat and oily . but just because she's white , people always looking at my older sister instead me . they just looking at me like " you're not my taste " i always cry and feel no confidence . untill now . so many people just say " sabar la / you're beautiful / love yourself / " and more but it doesnt make sense to me because everyday i facing the same thing edited :

That’s true. I was bullied back in primary school. They used to call me “Kicap” and everyone would be laughing as if it was funny. It wasn’t. Years after that, i was in the process of developing my self esteem when some people come to me and said “you only say skin colour doesn’t matter just because you’re dark.” It hits me hard. Now I’ve grown up and I totally love my skin colour. Even though there are still people that say “you’re beautiful if you’re a bit fairer” or “this girl is beautiful because of her fair skin” or “this baju will look nicer on you if you’re fairer” but you know what, I don’t give a damn anymore. There are also people that persuaded (more to force) me to consume all those whitening products. To all the girls out there, love yourself. Cut off people that make this thing a big deal. Then you’ll know that all these things don’t really matter. As of right now, it’s almost impossible to change the mindset of the people, just know that self love is more than anything, and please, don’t consume or stop consuming all those whitening products. Don’t put your health at stake to satisfy these people. ♥️

Everything you do to try to cover the flaws if you think you have any(read make up or plastic surgeries). And so much more. Endless. The effect of the sunburn is temporary and she can be fair again (p/s: she and me work at the same place while waiting for spm result).
Lastly, my friend, she is slightly darker than all of us, she was always insecure abt her skin colour and ask for beauty products from my other 2 friends to make her fairer. I hate to see her to feel that insecure.
I don't like n i don't want to toot my own horn but I'm the fairest among them all and even this old chinese lady who stopped by my stall said I could be a chinese with my skin like this and people always commenting on how pale my skin was and there was also times my schoomates (also my juniors) said they'd rather be dark than being pale like dead ones. Oh my.. They had really nothing to say when actually they keep wanting "fair" skin! Hey aunties, uncles, ladies and gentlemen out there, everybody is beautiful honestly. I have been so uncomfortable when ppl liking my skin colour and make others feel so insecure. I feel so bad to make them feel this way.
Let be honest here, if someone's beautiful, she'll be beautiful in what skin colour she could have and if someone's ugly, no matter how pale or fair she is, she's still be ugly. Sorry to sound harsh here, but it's better to say this rather than being a colourist. Peace out.

i care very much of my hygiene and skin health so my skin is clear , flawless , soft .. no whitehead no pimple no oily and blablabla but people always curse my skin colour because my older sister is white why im not . my older sister punya skin kusam , jeragat and oily .
but just because she's white , people always looking at my older sister instead me . they just looking at me like " you're not my taste "
i always cry and feel no confidence . untill now .

Dark skin is exotic... i love dark skin color, i try every ways to make my skin darker like Nandini, im sunbathing with tanning oil on the beach from 7am to 5 pm, but my skin color always back to white after 1 month...
Wow. And my face and hands have at least 3-4 shades difference after my skin got continuously tanned. I am like either get even or just get back to what you're. But they don't listen.😑

That’s true. I was bullied back in primary school. They used to call me “Kicap” and everyone would be laughing as if it was funny. It wasn’t. Years after that, i was in the process of developing my self esteem when some people come to me and said “you only say skin colour doesn’t matter just because you’re dark.” It hits me hard. Now I’ve grown up and I totally love my skin colour. Even though there are still people that say “you’re beautiful if you’re a bit fairer” or “this girl is beautiful because of her fair skin” or “this baju will look nicer on you if you’re fairer” but you know what, I don’t give a damn anymore. There are also people that persuaded (more to force) me to consume all those whitening products.
To all the girls out there, love yourself. Cut off people that make this thing a big deal. Then you’ll know that all these things don’t really matter. As of right now, it’s almost impossible to change the mindset of the people, just know that self love is more than anything, and please, don’t consume or stop consuming all those whitening products. Don’t put your health at stake to satisfy these people. ♥️

I always tell people that I gelap/dark (Because I am. My mum married my dad, a mamak) but my mum, my aunt etc always stop me, saying 'No la kakak, u're not dark. U shouldnt say that.' I'm like, seriously. What so bad about being dark? I am not degrading my self or anything. Really, I am on the darker shades n I cant acknowledge that? Reaaallly ah?
