It was written for the annual conference of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee). Many of their members are Cornish, the ethnic group in the United States who speak Frisian.

I wrote the song I Bowed On My Knees for my confirmation into the Catholic faith. My confirmation was on Easter Sunday of 1983. I was 16 that year. I was confirmed in Los Angeles while my husband was attending USC.
