- Surrounded by glittering waters, Rwanda's remote Iwawa island appears idyllic, but it has housed thousands of drug users, as well as reputedly those the government deems unsuitable for society. Iwawa is a vocational training centre and it has not only taught the youth life changing skills but also helped them get off drugs. In May 2011 Iwawa’s Rehabilitation and Vocational Development Centre held its first graduation ceremony. The youth here say that it is improper for one to call Iwawa’s Rehabilitation and Vocational Development Centre a confinement centre while it is rehabilitating the Rwandan youth and also helping them become productive members of society. This is emphasised by the Rwandan government which insists that it is a drug detox and rehabilitation centre, not a detention island or prison.

I love my country and support anyone trying to stop drug use in Rwanda. I have meant people from iwawa trust me there is a 65% fail rate. these people never changed. first of all no one has ever volunteered to go there ask yourself why!!! these people are all prisoners from kabuga. I 100% support what the government of Rwanda is trying to accomplish we have to stop drug use is Rwanda. anyone really interested in stopping drug abuse in Rwanda go look up a place called ikizara rehabilitation center in Kigali Rwanda. they have a 80% success rate due to the fact that they only accept people who want to change not criminals.

I didn't have to speak the language to understand the message of this video. In the UK when the youth have been detained......they go in with no skills and come out with no skills only how to commit new crimes and not be productive members of society. Rwanda showing the world yet again how to create a society that is safe and productive.

That's not for real ! I'm the first person who has been there I have been stay there like 5months no happiness..and that's not a school.. When they have a visitors ..they riders they have to tell them what to speak on the camera when the journalists interviewing them ... So stop fooling people.. Stop the nonsensical rubbish, young man! It's not all the students in a class who succeed and may be you are among the few failures we had on IWAWA. Fortunately many are the Laureates of Iwawa who turn around their lives and leave the island with new resolutions, new directions, new orientations ... a promise of new lifestyle and in perspective, a potential culmination of prosperity!!
