  • UPDATE: December 26, 2017
    The Maintenance-Free Pump is now available to current owners too! (a few weeks early). Order on our web site, or give us a call.
    The Oilless, Maintenance-Free Vacuum Pump for Harvest Right Freeze Dryers is here! It's faster and quieter than the two oil-based pumps we also tested (JB 6cfm Pump, and the new Harvest Right 7.2cfm Pump).
    In this video, we discuss the price and measure the noise level and frequency content of the sound of the new oil-less pump. We also measure how long it takes to process a batch of food with the new oil-less pump and compare it to both the new 7.2cfm pump (shipped with all Harvest Right freeze dryers starting in late November 2017) as well as the older 6cfm from JB Industries.
    This new oil-free pump is expensive but, like all scroll-type pumps, the machine work must be very precise to operate at such extreme vacuum levels. To learn more about how a scroll type pump works, there is an excellent video here: • Scroll Compressor
    As of December 13, 2017, the Oil-Less "Eagle" pump is available as an upgrade when purchasing a new freeze dryer on our web site, and will be available as a stand-alone item in January 2018 for existing Harvest Right owners. For existing freeze dry owners who are interested, you can send us an email or call us to be placed on the waiting list for the January 2018 release.

    I've been using the new oilless pump now for about a month and it's worked flawlessly! Pulls a deep vacuum very quickly and is much much quieter than the old pump. My wife and I live in a 750 square foot house so we don't have a garage or basement to dedicate to the freeze dryer. The noise of the old vacuum pump was definitely disrupting but the new one is night and day different. Worth every penny.

    There's nothing like scientifically-sound experiments and the metrics they generate to help one make an informed decision. You have convinced me to order my Harvest Right freeze dryer with the oil-free scroll vacuum pump option. Now I just need to see when we can afford it, but it will most definitely be the oil-free option. Thanks for all your hard work creating this video. I'll return the favor by ordering from you when the time comes.

    Hi Bryan, i got my large HR with oilfree pump last week. I ran 3 cycles, now at the 4th cycle my pump makes noises, like sthg is stucked inside, or scratching on sthg. The sound is really, really noisy and not "healthy" at all... im in Austria / Europe, so its a bit of a challenge to call tech support. Maybe you have an advice for me? Did i do shtg wrong?? Nice regards and thanks for your video btw

    Thanks so much for all your really hard work. I have been looking at the Harvest Right for a few years now, and not once was the 'oil' pump issue ever even mentioned. I am in Europe, and if I had ordered two years ago, and only then discovered the 'oil' issue - I would have been enraged. So now I will check out your website!

    This thing is continually broken. Four months over two rounds of it broken the machine was either off for repairs or waiting for HR to respond to emails. Now it is no longer under warranty and they want us to start paying every time it breaks. I like the machine but the pumps are garbage. The oil one requires to much work and the oil free one doesn’t work long.

      You will LOVE the new pump. Eliminating all the maintenance is such a joy. But it is expensive. We HR owners have all dealt with the maintenance with the oil based pumps and it's totally doable as I'm sure you agree. Up until now, it's been kind of the cost of admission to the world of home freeze drying. Once you have used your new oil-less pump for a few batches, I hope you chime in again with your experience!

    Hi Bryan,
    I just finished my first batch with my new pump. It took about two hours less than with my JB pump so it is definitely faster. I also love how much quieter this thing is too. I just finished washing my trays and then I went to do my routine oil change and then I remembered that is a thing of the past. I'm just waiting on my FD to finish defrosting and I'll be doing another batch. I totally love this thing!

    • @stevemontana5974
      @stevemontana5974 6 лет назад

      I know, it's awesome. I'm working on batch number 3 now. It is so nice not to have to drain and filter my oil every time. You do have to change some bearings or something I believe every 8,000 hours or something like that. By the time everybody gets to that point then hopefully there will be some sort of maintenance kit or service offered by HR.

    • @stevemontana5974
      @stevemontana5974 6 лет назад +1

      Actually here is the required maintenance:
      Seal replacement is needed every 8,000 hours of run time or 1 year. Shaft seals and bearings need to be replaced every 16,000 hours or every 2 years.

    • @docsmith76

    • @stevemontana5974
      @stevemontana5974 6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure, I just copied and pasted from Bryan's comment to someone else. Here's what he also wrote in another comment about getting those pieces:
      "For more information about seals and bearing replacement call 1-800-865-5584."
      I'm sure by this time next year this will be considered a normal process and I'm 100% positive that Bryan will have a how to video on how to do it and will probably sell the parts as well.

    So any modern input on all the problems people have been having with these new pumps? I am an industrial mechanic, and would like to know what the requirements are of these pumps.
    1, wouldn’t it be cheaper to have a non-C-Phase motor direct drive with a lovejoy coupler to prevent vibratory resonance through the entire machine, and use a catch-can with a baffle for the exhaust to reduce sound levels?
    Where can I find a parts list for the pump? Or an exploded view of the internals to find if it’s worth spending that kind of money on one, or setting up a different vacuum pump set up?

    Got the oil free pump in 2017 as a gift. Arrived early 2018 and did a batch last night and when the pump turned on, it was making horrible clanking sounds. What? This pump isn't even 3 years old and was over $1700 with shipping. Can't find anyone in my area that repairs them. Harvestright has been notified, awaiting a response.

    • @guyskeer5411

      The clanking is probably the fan housing at the top of of the unit. Mine was damaged in shipping. Just pried it up to clear the fan blades.

      Yes HR can rebuild your pump - Mine did the same thing after only 8 months. HR rebuilt it under warrantee within 2 weeks. That was 18 months ago - no problem since. I run my dryer almost 24/7. Not uncommon for pumps (of any kind) to need rebuilt within 2 years. It's still worth the cost to buy and maintain.

    It would be interesting to see an update to this video.
    1. New machines (screen on top) HR says they’re faster
    2. Software now uses a vacuum to help it freeze (faster and more of a difference in pump qualities?)
    3. I think they may have updated some parts to the oilless pump then the one here (I assume that makes it work better)
    I assume there would be greater differences in all numbers with a greater lead on the oilless setup.

    Great video Bryan. Has me thinking about which way to go. I have the JB pump and oil inside the chamber and hoses at the moment and was thinking about getting the other newer pump but now the oil less version is tempting although not in the budget right now. On top of that I bought the flush kit and extra oil that I would need to get rid of somehow hopefully sell. Decisions decesions

    • @EpicenterBryan
      @EpicenterBryan  6 лет назад +2

      There are a few tricks I've learned about that "oil up the hose issue" that might help you. First, put the pump as low as possible. That makes it harder for oil ever to reach the chamber. Next, the issue seams to be when the FD starts freezing. That slowly creates a vacuum in the chamber that starts sucking oil. You can open the drain valve for a while if you see oil creeping up. Don't forget to close it! Or, you can plug the pump directly into the wall for 20 seconds or so. That pulls the oil down, but also creates a vacuum such that the ball pops up and seals better. Hope that helps.

    • @carolpanepinto5484
      @carolpanepinto5484 6 лет назад

      Thanks Bryan. Do you have any tips for cleaning out the hoses? I probably have 1/2 cup of oil in the main hose. Have had the machine since last spring and this is the first time this has happened and I hope it is the last one way or another.

    • @EpicenterBryan
      @EpicenterBryan  6 лет назад

      I guess you could hang it with rags wrapped around the bottom end to drain it. If you really want to clean it out, I use Dawn dish washing detergent to clean my oil drain container. I would bet if you put a solution of hot water and dawn in the hose cans caps the ends with your hands you could swish the solution back and forth. Then empty and run hot water through the hose. Be sure to rinse really well.

    • @EpicenterBryan
      @EpicenterBryan  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Michael, I'm running the Eagle non-stop these days looking for glitches. So far, so good. The manual I received last week says the following:
      PUMP MAINTENANCE
      In order to make the best use of your investment, familiarize yourself with the
      features and operating instructions before starting pump. With routine care and
      following proper maintenance guidelines, your pump will give you years of reliable
      service. Pumps are designed for deep vacuum work on freeze dryers.
      Seal replacement is needed every 8,000 hours of run time or 1 year. Shaft seals
      and bearings need to be replaced every 16,000 hours or every 2 years. Replacing
      the seals is necessary for achieving deep vacuum and for proper freeze drying.

      I don't have specific data but The Eagle and also the new "standard" HR 7.2CFM pumps both use a 3/4HP motor. The JB was a 1/2 HP motor. A 3/4 HP motor is 559.275 watts, and a 1/2HP motor is 372.85 watts. Costs relate to "on time" and your local utility rates per kilowatt hours.... For now, that's all I can offer.

    Hi Bryan,
    I'm "liking" (literally) all your videos I'm watching and subscribed to your channel.
    I am curios to know if there is any reason I couldn't run the oil-less pump inverted. (i.e. the motor on the bottom and the vacuum pump on top. I ask cause my house has an unfinished basement. I f I set my soon to be purchased freeze dryer on my kitchen counter then use some plumbing fitting to hard pipe the freeze dryer outlet below my kitchen counter. Then connect the flexible hose to that and run it through my floor and connect to the pump. I could mount the pump inverted to the bottom of my basement floor joices. this would make the freeze dryer a more user friendly home appliance, while confining the majority of the noise to the basement. I understand the vacuum pump needs power from the back of the freeze dryer and all. I am an electrician by trade and work for a commercial HVAC/plumbing/electrical contractor. I have access all manners of info and supplies on a daily basis. I also have a washer drain close by in my basement where I could plumb the drain hose to, making the whole system a much more user friendly permanent type of installation.
    thanx for all the great fun and informative videos on freeze drying and the like.
    Have a great day.

      I contact HR about this today because you are one of several potential Eagle customers who have asked about Horizontal mounting recently. As soon as I have a response I will know more. The question is if the mechanism can be run horizontally without impacting performance or causing damage. Then, if HR or the pump manufacturer is interested in offering a "cradle" to support the pump in a horizontal orientation. If no harm is caused and they don't want to offer a cradle, I'll look into having them made to offer to customers like you.

    Was there a significant difference in energy consumption between the pumps or would that be too hard to measure given this appears to be in a shop with other machines. Curious if anyone can speak to what kind of spike they've seen in bills. Maybe Old Frugal One can speak to it (saw a comment saying you run yours 24/7). In my due diligence phase and want to get my arms around what I'm looking at.

    • @jerrysmith372

      No - the pump plugs into the back of the dryer and is controlled by the dryer. After the dryer calls for the pump to start it will run for the rest of the cycle and shut off at the end.

    Bryan, first let me preface my next line of questions with the fact that I am huge fan. A couple weeks ago you introduced the newly improved pump which was a flat out swap from the old pump and now a few weeks later yet another pump (which is almost the cost of my freeze dryer itself). In previous videos you demonstrated that the company would improve subtle things in the design and send out parts like stainless hardware, insulating cushion etc. What is their position on this innovation and the costs associated? Have people in the community sourced similar pumps for less money in the HR forums? $1,600.00 for hobbyists or entry level seems a lot and I am sure that has some mark up with it. I'm interested in your comments.

    • @EpicenterBryan
      @EpicenterBryan  6 лет назад

      Hi Ron. I'm not sure where the "stainless hardware, insulating cushion etc" reference came from, perhaps another channel. But I get your point on other comments I have made over the last year. I can not speak for Harvest Right. TheEpicenter.com (my company) is a dealer as of last April / May or so 2017. However, my interest in this product started when the wife and I bought ours with our own cold hard cash in December 2016, and I promptly blew ours up. Thanks to their help, I was back up and running within a week and I posted a video about that.
      As far as the $1600 dollar cost on the new pump. I totally get that it would buy LOTS of food to run through your freeze dryer. In trying to clean up the super long video, my point got trimmed.... It is EXTREMELY valid. The added cost for this upgrade is not for everyone. Thus, the lower cost (most common) oil path.
      When my JB pump started leaking in April 2017, HR said to send it back under warranty and they would fix it. I told them I would like to buy a spare pump and asked if they would send the parts so I could fix my original pump myself and post how to do it on the channel. They agreed, and that video has now been seen nearly 7,000 times as of this date. Looks like all users of that pump (not just Harvest Right Owners) have run into that problem with that specific pump.
      As far as anyone in the HR user community sourcing an oil-less pump like this at a lower price, I'm not aware it has been done. And I say "more power to you", and say go for it. There will be perils, and I say give it a shot if you have some cash and time to play with it. Might work, might not. First, make sure it is 120V, 60hz (not 50hz). Make sure it achieves extremely low mTorr vacuum. What is the magic number? Make your best guess. If it doesn't get that low, does it just take longer or does your food not dry ever? If it doesn't recover fast enough from increasing pressure as the sublimation process progresses from heating the trays and the HR firmware detects an unusual condition and goes into a mode to compensate, what happens? No clue. And if the "self sourced" pump draws more power than is designed and the Harvest Right output relay blows, or the socket melts and burns down your house down, "Who you gonna call? (ghostbusters)" or blame / sue?
      That's my put. I say buy the tested name brand. And with Harvest Right's name on these two pumps I know they have been tested with their Freeze Dryers and they will stand behind their warranty, and support the end user with not only replacement parts but debugging and general customer questions.

      That's a great question. I have only been testing this pump for a few weeks. However, pumps of the scroll type have few moving parts. They cost so much because of the precision machining involved. I am told for a pump that can operate at such a low mTorr range, costs can be in the $4,000 range. In the text below the video I mention an awesome animated video that shows how this type of pump operates. It is worth your time to take a look at that. I have been told that this pump can run upwards of 8,000 to 10,000 hours before a $100 gasket set may be needed. I assume it should be cleaned inside at that time.

Also replaced the vacuum sensor at the suggestion of one of the techs. I continue to get an error message telling me the FD cannot reach vacuum, or some such message, even after all the things I have tried. • @dalealumbaugh9861
      @dalealumbaugh9861 6 лет назад +2

      I am thinking of sending my oil-free pump back. Cost alone $1625 is one reason but the best reason is it does not work. Harvest right is now wanting me to remove the nozzle built into the drum containing the trays. However, I am told it takes a pipe wrench, maybe even using an extension on the pipe wrench to take it off. Not sure that is a good idea since I think it might cause serious damage to the drum. Even if I am successful, install the new nozzle to fit the larger pump hose, And, that does not fix the problem, I must reverse the procedure and re-install my original nozzle to begin using my original pump! However, since using or trying to use the Oil-free pump and find it does not work, I tried to use my original pump and now it only works to a point and it also gets the same message. Not sure what to do at this point but I am into this thing over $6000.

    however, there IS maintenance to be done on it but very easy to do. you must disconnect the unit from the freeze drier and run iso alcohol into the hose while the pump is on to flush contaminants from the unit. I use 90% about 1/3 cup at a time til the fluid comes out clean, may take a couple times if it hasn't been done for a few cycles. I do it every 3 cycles. just remember to tighten the hose before a new cycle. I forgot once and woke up to a unfinished cycle. oooppps . just retighten and continue.

HR had no idea when they invented this thing that they would have so many issues with the JB pump so it's not their fault. They do have a new HR oil pump for $300 that is supposed to address the flaws in the JB pump. Have you considered calling them and seeing if you could send in one or more of your pumps as a trade in? I did. They already had my spare pump in for repair when I bought this new one so I asked them if I could trade it in on some mylar bags since I no longer needed it as a spare and they said yes. They are very good about working with customers. Even if your current pumps are bad they can still repair them and use them as a replacement for another customer.

      Hey CallMe, give me a call. I have a few tips that will help you if you are still having oil in the hose issues with your JB pump. I'll be doing a video about what I learned since I posted that video last year. As far as the new Oil based HR pump goes, I haven't seen any issues with that one yet - but have limited ours using it. Right now I'm trying to get extra hours on the Eagle Pump since it is also new and expensive. But I will be going back to the JB soon. So many people have those, it's important to help resolve these issues.

      Hi Steve, you mentioned you had several bad pumps before you got your Eagle. Could you elaborate on what kind of issues, and how long you have had your Freeze Dryer? And I assume issues were all related to the older JB pumps (no longer supplied as of November 20th, 2017)? I don't want to beat a dead horse here, I just think a little more info will heal readers of the thread.

      They were all JB pumps. I finally figured out what was happening. I have tons of canned spaghetti sauce that I wanted to freeze dry and every time I did a few batches the pump would start leaking oil like crazy. After the third pump went bad then it donned on me that the acid in the tomato sauce was probably eating that rubber seal.
      Another pump just wouldn't power up one day so that was replaced under warranty and when I first got my freeze dryer I could no longer achieve a good mTorr after a while and HR determined that it was the pump and replaced it. So 5 bad ones total. 3 of them were probably my fault though due to the acid.
      I've had my FD for two years. Now that I've got the new pump I can get back to freeze drying my spaghetti sauce since it won't damage this pump.

      OK, so your problem was mainly with the rear seal. One of the issues with the rear seal on the JB pumps was that it had a steel (not stainless) spring in it which kept the seal tight on the shaft. That combined with the fact that crud could get behind the pump cartridge via the oil channel where the seal was, water could stay in that area (held there by crud). And when the spring rusted, it broke. There was talk that JB was going to change that spring to stainless. I don't know if they ever did or the spare parts channel for that seal ever did.... Perhaps HR gave up on JB because they didn't make the change. I have no insider info on that topic. But I think they have better control with the new pump supplier under their own name. That's a good thing. I wish the USA made company had taken the lead to provide a design that worked and had fewer failures but I guess once you get too big the customer (HR in this case) is not always right. That's why America has lost so much production to other countries.

    So before I purchased a Harvest right Standard size in March 2017 and paid over $3K +... I asked one of the engineers at harvest right why they didn't offer am Oil-less version vacuum pump... I was told an oil-less pump would cost an addition 5k in cost! AND that is why they never designed an oil-less pump version ...APPARENTLY THAT WAS A BIG F-IN LIE! My POS freeze dryer constantly upchucks oil when the cycle ends and ruins my batch of freeze dried food.

      Your existing JB pump probably has a bad check valve. Check out one of my other videos on the subject. You can contact me via our web site and I'm happy to send you a replacement check valve for you to try. I'll also be posting a video on how to add an external solenoid valve to older JB pumps to fix that issue. For now, move your existing pump as low as you can. Start your FD process, and remove your pump plug from the FD and plug directly into the AC outlet for about 10 seconds and remove. Then plug back into the HR. That will develop a strong vacuum and the check valve will pop up. Give me a call if you need more hints to get you going...

      I tend to agree with you! I had issues with our pump from the start, it's taken me months to get it rebuilt under warranty, just received it back and my first load is louder and something still sounds wrong with the pump. Service dept has not been easy to deal with and after paying a lot for an oil less pump, I'm super disappointed with the product and service. Can you share more about your experience and did they ever rectify your pump issue??

    Why is it you do not use a Tesla Vacuum Disk Pump using a shaftless magnetic induction drive A.C/D.C brushless electric motor? And why don't you Americans design and build and manufacture to last as long as it exists? American corporations sure knows how to fool their customers with useless warranties and guarantees when in fact they make everything to last forever, maintenance-free, repair-free, and trouble-free.

      darthvader5300: interesting pump, TDP, but looking over their website applications, there is nothing about "vacuum" applications. It requires something with mass to work, the thicker the better. Hence, TDP work with fluids. In the absence of fluids, a vacuum, the TDP does not work. There is NO Tesla VACUUM Disc Pump. Math calculations show a TDP could possibly reach 95% vacuum using air, but nothing below that. That's why no one uses a TDP to achieve near perfect vacuum conditions! They don't exist!
      Shaftless magnetic induction drives do exist. And so do brushless AC/DC motors. How much would you be willing to pay? Do you have a business model that shows people would be willing to pay a whole lot more money to gain a bit more efficiency? Law of diminishing returns.
