Man that story is tough. Thanks for sharing. Y'all did a great job of taking action and doing the right thing. I've heard many times "you'll never regret doing the right thing. Most of the time that's the hardest option." Keep sharing that wisdom man💪
I was a Vietnam era Seabee. We took all of our military training at Camp Pendleton. Our instructors were a mixture of Marines and other Seabees. Even though we were taught fairly adequately on land nav I always felt that there was more to it so I continued to learn and still love it after 50 some years.
Great video Bill! And that is the biggest reason why Cammenga TRITIUM compasses are better than civilian compasses like the Suunto MC-2. Good talk at the end, sorry to hear about that young soldier, but it proves that we all need "battle buddies" - just someone that we trust to talk too.
Great video Sir. Your channel is the sole reason that I have nav confidence during hunting season when scouting new areas. Also going off trail when hiking my local national forest. Thanks a ton . Stay Stoked!
It was a figure 4 movement, which appears to be shape of a 4. 100 yards from start point, checks, marks with chem light at 60 yards, security halt. Adjust compass 225 degrees - 50 yards Adjust 90 degrees - 40 yards Impossible to deny the value of the figure 4. Would love to see more awesome land navigation.
Great instructional on navigation. I will use that figure-4 on my next class this winter. I usually use a square so they start and end in the same location, but this is much cleaner and uses less space, excellent! Your closing words are a solid reminder to check in on friends and neighbors during the holidays, many are under stresses we don't know or see. Our son saw this when he was a rolling paramedic, some calls were pretty difficult. Now he flies to scenes and sees many fewer cases, but he still talks about the families and friends left behind, both their grief and guilt on losing a loved one. Thank you. 🥃
Great video. Just remember. No matter what we do, it will sometimes never be enough. Just make sure that when we stand on the other side. In front of the BIG MAN. We did what we could. That's what HE expects.
Your bread and butter sir... Thanks again for a great video on techniques for improving our land nav skills. 🥃🇺🇸😎. Enjoyed your after action report as well. We need to be aware and help who we can ... Thanks...
Great training today Top! The box drill is a great training tool IMO… very simple to get the basics of land navigation in action. And, it can be done anywhere, so perfect “hip pocket training”. True story… leaders in the service see a lot of life, not just through our eyes, but those we’re charged with taking care of… all the best and sometimes the worst. Enjoy the stogie and have a big swig of tears. Keep up the Fire!
Something I've learned over the years is that a simple good morning, good afternoon or a simple Howdy can sometimes give someone just enough acknowledgement not to feel like they're made of glass or invisible. Sometimes that simple act is just enough.. Stay Stoked.
Hey thank u for this information I’m a 1371 for usmc and my 0311’s that we’re attached to always do the land nav for us and I’ve been wanting to learn to teach my squad and junior marines
Good video, Stoker! Even if you know landnav... always good to listen to a refresher, right? You did a good job here... I reckon even a butterbar could follow this simple tutorial. 🤔 Ok, I hear ya barking, big dogs.... maybe a butterbar could still shit the bed. 😅🤣 I appreciate your little talk at the end, Stoker... I've lost people too to "self deletion" including my oldest son. It's beyond awful... I think of him every single day. Do not give up! As Churchill said "if you are going through hell - keep going". Remember; if you're in pain you're alive, if you're alive you can fight, if you can fight you can win! I don't know who said that but I live by it everyday. Stay strong!
@@STOKERMATIC Yeah... it was a shitty hand to be dealt for sure. But I'll say this - I survived it and am pretty much unbreakable now. They can kill me, Stoker, but they can't break me. Keep fighting, brother!
Top notch Top. I would’ve thought you’d of left that hip flask at the chem light to,ya know, add a little urgency to the exercise. But seriously, you’re right,ya gotta practice those skills. Someone I know can’t even get a TelePrompTer right 😅.
Excellent video, the figure 4 method will be a go-to method for practice! The last part of this video is genuinely tragic. More so than developing Land Nav skills I appreciate your interest in reaching out and helping our fellow humans with their personal issues.
Very informative. Question, if you were the follower and suspected the people you were following to be using the figure 4 technique, what would you do? Maduro's are the best by the way.
Great navigational instructions. Question ; the only trick I've been taught to cover up tracks in snow is for the last guy to tow a tree branch behind themselves. Doesn't hide your trail but makes it more difficult for a tracker to estimate the number of people in your party. Do you have any tips for concealing tracks made in the snow ? Found your story about the young man very disheartening. Remember even small victories are victories and they do add up.
The real issue that could arise in the world when things aren't working too well either not anymore or unexpectedly irreversible is how to keep people alive on Earth or doing crazy things either risky or bad when the beliefs of wanting to stay alive on Earth have disappeared. We all, who are currently making it of course have some way of making it but the real reality not everyone is and the reality is people who didn't make it used to be making it in life. Some people are really built super far away from thinking about dying at all as the barrier of emotions is so great they would do anything to survive but not everyone is like that. I worry for everyone who would lose their minds in the future who haven't yet. Not everything lasts forever no matter how good it looks like today. Hopefully people never lose their minds of course but when that reality gets significantly challenged, how are people supposed to make it when if everything were to truly be analyzed, everything is just a guess?
Stoker? In the sub force standing lookout watch when on the surface, I used to call in a contact to the officer in charge by using a thing we called " relative bearing" . Example; I see a contact off my port side and instead of looking to the compass and maybe loosing that contact ( weather, large waves ect), I use relative bearing as if we assume no matter what our actual bearing or heading is , we assume that we are heading 0 degrees (360) , so I'd notify that officer " sir, I have a contact @ realitive bearing 280 approx 1000 yards heading towards us ...ect). My question is did you use something similar in land nav or do you think it could be useful to do so
I would think it would be good for maybe two fellas hunting, both facing the same direction assume you got your deer and your buddy didn't. You see one before him , use relative bearing instead of moving and pointing to avoid detection from the prey. I just didn't know if it could be used in land nav. On the ocean, I may be on the port side lookout, sea state is heavy...if I take my eyes off it I could loose it in the waves. So I'd tell the o.o.d. the relative bearing. Anyway, just thought an ol' squid could add sumthin useful lol

If 10% of a population exhibits aberrant behavior, and the total membership of said population is 100, the aberrant ones number 10 individuals. If the percentage remains constant, but the total population increases to 1,000, the amount of those with aberrant behaviors increases to 100. I believe that is the situation we are currently experiencing; more people = more bad guys.
Good tutorial. Sad people get that point. Not going to lie , I was there at one instance. Realized that wouldn’t solve anything. Push through and play your cards
You know you've been compromised if your chem light has been stolen! Congrats making the vid in the cold snow. At least there's no bugs. Edit: what could the Army do for AJ, other than discharging him? Once he was known to be that close to attempting, he could never remain. Maybe compulsory treatment? Sorry for him and his kid. Damn, what a way to lose your dad.
TBH, the chem light was only placed there as a means of gauging the accuracy of movement in the figure 4. AJ could/should have participated in a 30 day inpatient program. And he wasn't kicked out, as I recall he separated at his end of service. Crazy story - and wish that was the only one in my history.

Have multiple OPs set up, Observe from a distance - use patience and don’t execute too quickly.
A small compass helped me so much while coon hunting. Iv been hunting all my life, but i still have no sense of direction 😂

Found your story about the young man very disheartening. Remember even small victories are victories and they do add up.
Appreciate that & no, not tracking any technique that will conceal tracks in snow, maybe wear sasquatch feet shoes?
@@STOKERMATIC Remember the Vietnam era boots with the "barefoot" soles going in the opposite direction to which you are travelling ?
Just curious, would you then go back to your starting point or continue parallel to the original 90 degrees?
Could you have map traning with the Camenga compass ? It woyld be best ! 😄
Coming soon to north Georgia.

Good for patrolling - but polar directions are only effective if one knows the orientation of the observer.
