They would shoot the first 5 rounds that contained propane gas to saturate the area in gas and then the 6th round shot would set off the explosion as it ignited the gas from the first 5 rounds. They were used on the Eastern Front.

There is a _lot_ of nonsense being written about thermobaric weapons, indeed. Just the name "vacuum bomb" is silly, not how this weapon works: it's overpressure and to a very small degree the flame front.
If thermobaric weapons have been used on civilian populations in North Vietnam, then that's precedent right there. I cannot understand why the US is out to ban development and use of weapons its own military has pioneered in a civilian setting. It lasted almost 20 years. Casualties and losses: North Vietnam & Viet Cong 30,000-182,000 civilian; South Vietnam: 195,000-430,000 civilian dead... let's compare it with the wars of Russia the First Russo-Chechen War, was a struggle for independence waged by the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria against the Russian Federation from December 11th, 1994 to August 31st , 1996 (about 1.5 years). 30,000-130,000 chechen civilians killed The Soviet-Afghan War was a protracted armed conflict fought in the Soviet-controlled Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (DRA) from 1979 to 1989. Hope you will publish a video showing the dangers of US cluster bombs used by Ukraine in the battle field. Cluster bombs are banned by most countries in the world but US supplied them to Ukraine to fuel the war, causing barbaric effects
The reason for banning isn't the immediate effect. And so *what we have seen* wasn't considered "barbaric" (it's just a lot of small bombs). The reason is that they leave behind unexploded bomblets that may harm civilians for years to come (unless carefully cleared).

A ridiculous discussion about sending people to their deaths in a "humanitarian" way.... then maybe you should also think about banning attacks with drones that drop charges, because in most cases a charge isn't enough and it can take minutes for the next one to arrive, which may still not be fatal. Will America be held accountable for its supply of cluster bomb which are illegal under international law. Ukraine has used American cluster bombs in Donetsk and Belgorod.
But they arent though, while CNN and many other news sources pretend they are when it suites them, they are not... The ban on cluster munitions is a treaty based rule which the USA, Russia, and Ukraine have not signed onto and therefore not subject to. So the US handing them to Ukraine is in fact very legal, how Ukraine uses them could theoretically violate the laws of war on other grounds though.
cluster munitions are not illegal. Russia has used them in Ukraine since begining of war and I think that Ukraine has also right to decide if they want to use them in their own land
It's so laughable to say some weapon is banned. Imagine telling someone to stop while also telling them that they cannot use these tool, so they should use other tools. When real war comes, all these dumb rules will be tossed out of the window by everyone.
It doesn't "Sucks the Air Out of Your Lungs ... Its a thermobaric bomb/missile launcher. Thermobaric bombs or "vacuum bombs" are also used by US, UK, Israel, Syria and Ukraine. Thermobaric bombs gets the misnomer "vacuum bomb", because of a partial vacuum it creates AFTER the initial explosion has already occurred. One of the effects is rupture of lungs after the shockwave but this happens from other explosions as well, be it from a nearby bomb like C4 going off or from an artillery strike. Shockwave happens during every explosion and is not exclusive to thermobaric or "vacuum" bombs/missiles.
Ukraine doesn’t have, produce or receive thermobaric weapons. The only documented instance of it being used by the Ukrainian side was by the Da Vinci Wolves unit using a captured trophy TOS-1 against its former owners.
Yes, but you can protect yourself better behind obstacles against an ordinary explosion, however with so-called vacuum bombs this is much more difficult. This explains their extensive use by the Russians.
Its just another nasty weapon. Queu up and pull a number, Tos! Gets a notorious mythe like the Stuka had. Nothing super about it, except hollywood lovers get aroused by it.
@@ruthenian.wisdom Actually Infantry level thermobaric weapons like RPO-A Shmel are used by many other nations. Works on similar principle but scaled down.
@@SayakMajumder handheld infantry flamethrowers are a different story. Yes they can be morally questionable indeed, but in comparison to the TOS-1 they don’t pack as a serious punch, whereas that thing is basically a rolling war crime most infamous for demolishing big cities like Mariupol. Also it’s important to note that Ukraine doesn’t use any RPO-A Shmel launchers, since the soviet stockpiles were mostly reserved for the RSFSR and the arms trade between Ukraine and Russia has been suspended since 2014, instead they use a domestically produced, improved modification called the RPV-16.
The small underpressure created by thermobaric explosion is completely insignificant when compared to the overpressure. You wouldn't suffocate or even notice any lack of oxygen.
The big deal with thermobaric weapons is that unlike conventional explosives with a very sharp shape to the pressure over time the thermobaric has a much longer dwell time at the maximum pressure. Even if the max pressure and temperature are similar the extended time of over pressure does the dirty work.
The point is that there is no hiding from this weapon. They are worse than napalm, because... penetrates into any crack or basement where there is open access to air. I can’t say for sure, the main element is like aluminum oxide, which, when interacting with oxygen, undermines it over the entire area. Russia still has thermal ammunition for Smerch, which is no longer made of aluminum but titanium, which interacts with nitrogen, which is ten times more abundant in the atmosphere.
Most ameritards still have in their heads thar russia uses rusted equipment from the soviet era and throws thousands of men against the ukrainian machine guns. The propaganda has completely emptied their heads.
When they work properly. Russia's weapons are typically best when they're new fresh out of the factory. They never quite figured out that you can keep them in brand new condition with a little bit of maintenance and it's a whole lot cheaper than having to buy new stuff every time because you ran the old stuff into the ground.
@@ignacio4159 Americans are well aware of Russias weapons arsenal, at least what we know of. Many just don’t want to accept the fact that Russia has them. 🤷♂️
The US used the "Daisy Cutter" variety to clear landing fields, so this bomb isn't exclusive to Russia. BLU-82 produces an overpressure of 1,000 pounds per square inch (6,900 kPa) near ground zero, tapering off as distance increases. It is detonated just above ground by a 38-inch (970 mm) fuze extender. This results in a maximum destruction at ground level without digging a crater.

Hypocrisy of the So-called Geneva Convention!! They call out for the ban of thermobaric weapons but not of conflicts/wars. The convention should put more focus on cease-fire rather than banning the weapons.
Weapons that Russia has already been using since they started the war... So Russians should not complain if they are served the same medicine in return 🎉
It's actually not the latest version. Tosochka is the one, longer range more devastating and more mobile. Russia shows it's weapons superiority over NATOs ones in Ukraine.
TOS is very short range thus is only used very close to the front line where there is very few remaining civilians even in urban areas. Thus any debate about thermobaric weapons would be more pertinent with other weapons. In fact, the main defense against such weapons by the Ukrainian is not destroying them but dispersing their troups at the front line just as against others artillery weapons that have a zone of effect. This is why there is no continuous heavily manned trenches in this war. Any concentration of force would be very quickly destroyed by indirect fire.
The pressure can collapse your lungs, and the way this explosives' works (aerosols a fuel to make use of the natural air) it is more likely to burn peoples lungs which also leads to asphyxiations.
When you hold your breast you still have air in your lung. In this case air sucked up out . The damage on the respiratory system kill you or if you survive (blast, burning air, vacuum, negative pressure …) let you permanent injuries.
The overpressure does the damage, not the underpressure. If you are close enough to the explosion to witness the "vacuum" effect, you are already dead.

That's actually unlikely, given just how fast the progress is. In ten years we might see completely AI-driven drones or even laser weapons being used. Not saying there's nothing to learn here, but it's quite naive to expect that the next war will use the same kind of weaponry.

humans’ capacity for cruelty and inhumanity towards other humans is nearly limitless… especially among the ‘psychopath class’… and it has been going on for millennia
The last frame of the drone footage reveals that the hit vehicle is actually a Grad rocket launcher, not a TOS-1A. The Grad MLRS has metal tubes welded together, while in the TOS-1A, the missile tubes appear like holes in a solid block.
Just for the record: 1) Russia has been using cluster munitions against civilian targets since the beginning of the war against Ukraine 2) Ukraine uses cluster munitions on its own, temporarily occupied territory. And while I don't like to defend Russia: all the "evil bad TOS-1 weapon" noise is non-sense. It's an area-suppression weapon that is particularly effective against soft targets (infantry, unarmored vehicles) out in the open.

The reason for banning isn't the immediate effect. And so *what we have seen* wasn't considered "barbaric" (it's just a lot of small bombs). The reason is that they leave behind unexploded bomblets that may harm civilians for years to come (unless carefully cleared).
They are banned only by countries who don't think they will be part of a major war in the near future.

Shockwave happens during every explosion and is not exclusive to thermobaric or "vacuum" bombs/missiles.

humanitarian and warfare doesn't exactly go together
The US uses them as well. As a vet, I personally saw them in use.
"used by USA to clear forest in Vietnam" 😂😂😂😂😂
WSJ, you do know we used the exact weapon on the caves in Afghanistan, right? but, could this be a case of "well, its ok when we do it?"
TOC used to eliminate bunker, stronghold and such
That Afrikaans accent is unmistakable.
US drops Thermobaric 💥
BIden: We don't want any escalation ...
Look who is talking about illegal weapons. The same people who used napalm against children 50 years ago
Its use is very restricted, on military targets. Russia doesn´t use it to bomb civilian targets, marketplaces etc. That is what Ukraine is doing
How would you suffocate when the blast if over is seconds. Can't the average person hold their breath for 10 seconds?
The pressure can collapse your lungs, and the way this explosives' works (aerosols a fuel to make use of the natural air) it is more likely to burn peoples lungs which also leads to asphyxiations.
When you hold your breast you still have air in your lung. In this case air sucked up out . The damage on the respiratory system kill you or if you survive (blast, burning air, vacuum, negative pressure …) let you permanent injuries.
The overpressure does the damage, not the underpressure.
If you are close enough to the explosion to witness the "vacuum" effect, you are already dead.
There is videos of TOC-1 use from Syria. Bodies stay impact not even burned.
TOC heats the air up to 3000°C
US used this kinda weapon in Vietnam, Afghanistan and could use. Russia can not use this kind of weapon in Ukraine. Ok.
The hypocrisy of the United States has reached space!
Human rights activists want to restrict these weapons and yet approve the use of cluster munitions on civilian markets in Donetsk city
The country that dropped Agent Orange in Vietnam is trying to give us a moral lesson guys
Who would be indignant?! Napalm, nuclear weapons, Agent Orange, phosphorus, depleted uranium!!! Tell me who used this all over the world???
This script has been written by ChartGPT, a free version, the sad part these clowns didn't even take the time to read it.
"To avoid thermobaric weapons, Military analysts told Ukraine to destroy the weapons before getting destroyed by them" that genius if you ask me.
Agree. And if it wasn't written by ChatGPT, it should have been.
Ai sounding a lot like moustache man with that logic.
Here's an idea, maybe we shouldn't push countries to the point of war so our elites can make a profit and feel tough. You reap what you sow and we aren't sowing nothing good.
Is this the same type of technology in 9mm cartridges? The ones that blow the lungs out of the body?
That sounds like some malarkey to me 🤣 literally only clicked this video to find this comment haha
As a Russian young who (who considers himself as a patriot and supports the decisions of my president) I would like to gloat and say something like: "Envy in silence!" or "Ha! You don't have similar weapons!"
But no, it's stupid and uncivilized, so I'll show restraint and say that I'm pleased to realize that Russian weapons are still at their best and are able to amaze and surprise the foreign press and military experts! I am proud of my country, domestic engineers and designers! Glory to engineering! Glory to science! 🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺
A larger long range guided version is under construction. Planned production run is in the thousands.
Planned******** They'll make like 30 over the next decade.
That's just Harkonnen's rocket tank!
Russia has the most moral army in the world
Well at least in this conflict i agree with you.
Lol WSJ trying to tell you Putin bad guy, when the US they themselves uses cluster bombs, white phosphorous and uranium tank shells.
Nato and Zelensky have already lost. Why kid yourselves.. Ukraine is Russia.. always was, always will be.
We see scores of Zelensky troops surrendering all over the battlefields, yet the WSJ talks about Zelensky destroying Russian advanced weaponry. Get deal. The Russian weapons are most advanced and plentiful..Nato has been defeated, as all reputable independent researchers tell us.
War criminals who used napalm, cluster bombs, and Agent Orange preaching how to do war.
Another advice from these geniuses is you have to win otherwise you lose.
today i will simply binge every single wsj-produced weapon system explanation video
It is believed that Russia added TBG-7V thermobaric warhead to UAV's so it makes it quite difficult to destroy them now. Armies should take lessons from this war and get ready since this will be what they will be up against in the future conflicts
Why wouldn’t type of payload change how easy the are to intercept?
@@chrissmith7669 Very hard to intercept but again a much smaller effect, it's similar to our SMAW-NE round.
@@trogdortpennypacker6160 100m radius per blast that destroys everything! Multiply that by 24 and that is some serious damage!
i have noticed alot of russian drone footage has had a huge blastwave literally taking out houses with medium-sized drones. that make sense to me now. compare to others and ukraines drones its very large difference. crazy how fast boths side interiated ukraine being the first to use cheap drone now russia learning that and master them. like anti drone cages or "cope cages" used by russia now ukraine uses them. its like a push and pull.
That's actually unlikely, given just how fast the progress is.
In ten years we might see completely AI-driven drones or even laser weapons being used.
Not saying there's nothing to learn here, but it's quite naive to expect that the next war will use the same kind of weaponry.
I love how people think that a piece of paper dictates how and when you are going to fight for your life in war.
"IF you survive the primary blast and then IF you also survive the secondary shrapnel then there is a _small_ chance that you _could_ suffocate."
Video title: VACUUM BOMB SUCKS ALL THE AIR OUT OF YOUR LUNGS
Do better, WSJ, then you might get more respect.
they dont need respect. they need views and money XD
sadly.
let me guess, this media never talk abaut Israeli weapon to destroy Gaza
This media know that Israel produce nukes
Those frontline cities/towns (like Avdiivka, Vuhledar, Bakhmut) where it's used are void of civilians.
humans’ capacity for cruelty and inhumanity towards other humans is nearly limitless… especially among the ‘psychopath class’… and it has been going on for millennia
How about ending war? This is horrible weapon, but with modern technology only expect more and worse. Ultimately there will be no survivors.
The last frame of the drone footage reveals that the hit vehicle is actually a Grad rocket launcher, not a TOS-1A. The Grad MLRS has metal tubes welded together, while in the TOS-1A, the missile tubes appear like holes in a solid block.
NATO-backed Ukraine uses cluster bombs and depleted uranium mortars which are completely illegal. West: it's fine. Russia uses a semi-legal weapon. West: noooooooooooooooooooooooo, it's bad, noooooo!!!!
Not illegal.
It only becomes a war crime if you target civilians with it - which I guess Russia (unsurprisingly, it seems to treat the "war crimes list" as a TODO list) has done.
@@AlexanderSchreiber just for the record: 1) wrong. 2) still illegal.
@@khrapov 1) plenty of evidence of the remains of russian submunition dispensers in residential areas in Ukraine. 2) What you do on _your_ _own_ soil is _your_ problem.
Russia uses the same kind of rounds but then whines.
What's humanitarian about War? You want Russia to make Eco friendly missiles?..😂
Yes, that's what they want.
It's not banned in Russia and China. Because they don't consider it illegal.
Its not banned in the US either, but you just wanted to spew some demonization propaganda.
isn't white phosphorus in cities "illegal" too , yet there's evidence of a certain country using them extensively
Why's the USA concerned about it? The US have as well.
educational video. I am always confused by the term 'rules of war' and 'weapons being made illegal'. I only rule of war is to win.
