  • February 26 2021 - BROOKLYN, New York:
Crowds of people danced and celebrated the Jewish holiday of Purim in the streets of South Williamsburg today.
Around 5:30pm the sirens went off, indicating that sunset is near and the crowds rushed home to observe shabbat.
Purim is celebrated on the 14th and 15th days of Adar, the twelfth month of the Jewish Calendar which usually coincides with March.
Purim is a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, as recounted in the Book of Esther. Haman was the royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, he planned to kill all Jews in the empire.
Purim is a festive day when it's common to dress up in costume.

My favorite holiday it's always Hanukkah that is known in the mainstream but purim is waaaay better everyone gets costumes there are parties everywhere we send gifts packs full of candies bonbon and choclates to each other we eat Haman's ears which are special holiday cookies full of chocolate and there is actually a will to get intoxicated and have fun
And also we make huge parades with colorful big floats my personal best holiday hands down

I think New York is the most Jewish city, the foreign city with the highest number of Jews it seems, outside Israel. But I know there are other groups too from other countries.
For some reason RUclips showed me this video 2 years later 😅 This year I watched Purim live in Israel. But this is the first time I see it in New York.
Purim or celebration of Esther Book, how I usually name it, it is a great and beautiful celebration.

Love the masks, not to mention the social distancing. So upsetting to see my people behaving like this in the midst of an epidemic that has taken so many of them already. Purim can wait, as can all the hageem. There's always time to celebrate after we are all vaccinated. Seeing this is disheartening.
