Quidhampton stone terminal. You are walking on what remains of the GWR line from Westbury to Salisbury. This section was retained to serve the quarry. The lines to the quarry go off to the right. The connections at Wilton replaced the separate double track GWR/SR lines in the early 1970s.
Looked at Google Earth and it appears to be the quarry just the other side of the A36 from Wilton. That track is in amazing condition, I`ve seen worse sleepers on main lines. Nice vid James.
Update Feb 2022 Its Quidhampton quarry. West of Salisbury UK. Closed 2009 hence only partly overgrown. There were/are plans to infill it with waste aggregate which would be delivered by train, so the tracks would be useful in that event. If you Google "Quidhampton quarry" there's a good RUclips video (by Salisbury radio) which is done by drone and starts off from where this video was recorded
Quidhampton sidings isn't completely abandoned. It is occasionally used for stabling purposes. That's why the signal was still on. And you were trespassing on the railway.
I sometimes have strange dreams about train travel where my train starts on an ordinary line in full use, then the line gets more and more overgrown like the one in the video - and eventually the rails disappear entirely and the train is somehow running on meadow grass or perhaps over under-brush! They're always quite pleasant dreams. I hope all that buddleia shown towards the end of the film is attracting lots and lots of butteflies! My parents used to keep a large buddleia at the bottom of their garden which was quite a magnet for these insects.
When the Woodhead line finally closed and the extensive Manchester-end sidings were torn up, buddleia seemed to come out of nowhere to replace the missing sleepers, along with fast-growing birch trees, almost as if the plants had been biding their time.
This is the old quarry sidings that lead off the LSWR lines west of Salisbury before the mainline splits before east of Wilton to Exeter via Yeovil and Bristol via Westbury. I think the quarry was operated by Hanson.
Not off the old LSWR line but the GWR line, it was actually part of the GWR line from Westbury into Salisbury which was abandoned in the early BR nationalised era and GWR trains diverted onto the LSWR one for the last couple of miles into Salisbury.
Quidhampton. I passed there driving a 159 about 10 years ago and saw the Royal Train parked behind that dummy. They kept it there overnight while Charlie was on a local visit.
The line through our country looked like this for many years. We feared for its future. Fortunately a regional rail authority took it over and developed on-line businesses. It now see regular use with 65 car freights. We have grade protection, but no signaling system. The old semaphores and signal bridges remain darl and rusty.
Thanks for sharing this, a most interesting line-walk. May I suggest though, that to put things into context, you open by showing a map of exactly where this railway line is located. Also, what was the historical purpose of the line; passenger, freight, military? Again, thanks for a brilliant track walk.
Quidhampton Sidings for the former chalk & china clay quarry closed in 2009. It's only about 2 miles West of Salisbury station at Wilton Junction where the Western line branches off from the Southern to Westbury. Part of it was the original GWR line into Salisbury before the junction was built. Easily viewed on Google Earth.
This is the military loading spur for the heavy armour, and QM stores , now all de comissioned . But as its military the main line connection is kept installed and maintained . That's why it's all still in situ and technically with a day or twos spot sleepering and clearing fully operational
I noticed the Exit ground signal, with route indicator still in place and operational, also the pandrel clips just ahead of the trap points were brand new. It makes me think that this stretch of track has not been forgotten and maybe there are some future plans in store.
Quidhampton Sidings, used to be for the Quidhampton chalk slurry terminal. Still in active use hence the shunt signal 6 on thr Wilton Junction GF is still active. Please don't trespass on railway property
Thats the old chalk pit.The track used to go much further down towards salisbury. But they built houses on it.I remember riding motorbikes down it as a child.
My guess is that although the line is unused, and appears to have been unused for sometime, the live signal means that the person who filmed this was trespassing.
Our local rail historical society has an annual outing to explore what they call "dead rail." It's interesting, but I think I like "live rail" better. It's sad to see a railroad out of service or its remnants.
No,i think it is the old GW tracks from their terminus at Salisbury to Bristol.Houses have been built on part of the line nearer Salisbury. Also shown was the tracks leading to Quidhampton Quarry which closed down a few years ago,but that is kept for possible reopening.
Quidhampton (Tinkerpit) Broadland Quarry sidings. Interesting video, but going beyond the shunt signal 994 was very iffy, as that is Network Rail live railway. Railscene video did a feature on these sidings when still operated by English China Clays (ECC).
Was the area of hard standing a former loading area? I was just thinking that the line was a spur to a quarry that provided track ballast or stone for road tarmac. Would be great to take a 'Gronk' down there and do a bit of weed-bashing.
Quidhampton English China Clay ECC or Calcium Carbonates sidings nothing to do with MOD though the Airfield fuel point sidings was nearby that fed a pipeline to Boscombe Down
Looks very much like the Quidhampton Sidings at Salisbury. I have a number of digital pictures going back to the last day when the last load of clay was removed from the site on 30 March 2009. IMERYS loco Coral TOPS No 01571 (Loco now at Bugle in Cornwall) was present and took the remaining wagons to the exchange sidings for Class 66 Loco No 66191 to take the wagons to their final destination. Still have a number of digital pictures, any ideas on how to get them on RUclips?
You say this line is abandoned, yet the signal at 4:59 is still working. In the US, the first thing a railroad does when a line is abandoned is turn off the signals.
Chris Ackerley I think that signal is on, because it’s protecting that derail switch. There it probably doesn’t matter which direction the signal is facing. Don’t want track maintenance or any other movements hitting the derail from either direction.
A lot of track going to waste. Why not tear it up and donate it to an operational preserved railway like Bluebell and the one in Kent failing that sell it for s rap
It must have been "mothballed" for possible future use or it would have been torn up. I read that good-condition continuously-welded (in-tunnel) track from the former Manchester-Sheffield main line was never reused but just sent for scrap, and this line looks rather woebegone, despite the in-situ points-signalling: maybe the sleepers have rotted away, as you'd probably expect. There doesn't seem to be any visible "development" around the trackbed (like housing-estates or industry) that the disused line could serve.
240 . The track on the left is definitely abandoned because nothing has ridden on that for years but the track he is walking on doesn't look abandoned to me in parts must of only became abandoned because there is not enough time for the foliage to grow
