Thank you for using the correct term of core plug. I hate the propagation of the core plugs just pop out if you freeze the water in your engine. They don't protect you from a cracked engine block.
Thanks man - very helpful. Like you said, not a lot of good info out there on these. I have a 1984 Volvo Penta AQ125A B21 based marine engine I’m working on. The original plugs corroded through. Currently stripped down the the block - have new plugs ready to go in. Hammer time.
Glad that you came to a compromise on plugs, but most importantly, sharing information that is important for future reference. Cannot for Ivy to return to service.
Great machine shop that compensate you,and one thing that’s important even if you live in a place where there is no winter always use antifreeze, and water that you use in battery there’s no lime in that water.
Great videos.. I’ve had many Volvo’s and have many Volvo’s still.. including a 71 164.. any time your drilling and are worried about metal shavings just put a little grease on your drill bit and the shavings will get trapped in the grease..don’t over heat the bit though.. Andrew
This must be the definition of "over thinking" something. A core plug popped on my B30 and I simply knocked a new one in by the side of the road. No further issues.
@@DavidBello yes but the main thing is that you are in the process of resurrecting a 1975 240, plus you have been restoring Ivy & Amy, plus your other cars Genevieve, Bruce plus the other cars, I admire that also you have been helping David Hunt to maintain both his pride & Joy's on the road, the 1973 164, & the P1900, I know you have friends that also give a hand,by helping anyway they can, but when you take on projects like that you also need help to complete, & make those cars roadworthy again.
My favorite part was the Dion’s box in the back. I really had no idea how to do freeze plugs. They do just look stamped! I figured they would be smoother and more perfect.
I think they are stamped and shaped in the same operation. If the edge is "soft" and not smooth, it may even help to bed into the similar surface condition of the seat in the block. I know that David give the seats a whizz with the wire brush but some of these looked as if they had been recut. If they are bigger by even a fraction, that would exacerbate the problem. Maybe re zinc plating the plugs after stamping would help. That would make a cheap part more expensive though.
i don't think that engine flex will be an issue at all, generally speaking on any European automobiles that I have dabbled with and cobbled on, plug retainers are only necessary if you really built up you engine and it is under more strain than initially manufacturer specified.

Way back, when I was rebuilding. I always used brass freeze plugs. They don’t rust, and the metal is softer for a better seal. Old school

I just wanted to say I love the camera angles and how you cut in various parts when you're explaining things. It was super helpful!

David if I was in LA I would jump at the chance to help you with your Volvo!
Use a smaller hammer/hammers as a punch. A ball hammer and one that is flat at both ends. Good if you are having problems with working space.

Nice to see Ivy moving on it*s own, it reminds me of the song, "Happy Trails", now it*s going to be Amy, and then the 1975 240,
They won’t be anything like this project. I don’t have that kind of mental stamina to continue this caliber of projects in solitude

Do you have any video of how did you pull out the old freeze plug??? Which Ep???
Any news on the 75 wagon you teased?
It’s been sitting, and I’ll assemble the purchase video once things calm down on the 164 build
@@DavidBello nice to see ivy driving around at the end there
Are you using band geeks cover of Hold the line??
Kewl!

Welsch plugs are named after a person/brand, not after a Wales ( that would be Welsh).

how do you handle your music licensing? So many RUclipsrs seem to fall foul of the copyright police
Short samplings and cover bands 🤫
