Valve will do anything at this point instead of making portal 3
Except Valve did nothing here either, this is just Nvidia trying to justify $1000+ GPUs. ;)
But where could they take the gameplay from here? Portal 1 was the initial concept. Portal 2 polished the concept. What next? 3 portals per gun?

In certain parts, it doesn't look like portal anymore, but in other parts, it looks incredible.
On one hand the intense florescent lights and warm radiant glows help compliment the original game's design of "cold, dark but highly futuristic", but on the other hand that cold and dark aspect is soiled a bit by how highly shiny, bright, and reflective everything seems. Parts that were supposed to be barren and dim are now just a tad bit too bright. Either way, looks incredible even if it clashes with the original design's intentions.
Yeah, it mostly doesn't have that Portal feel.
Looks incredible in all scenes, dude. Fucking "nostalgia lover".

They make way more money from Steam. I doubt they'll ever invest in a portal 3
@@maythesciencebewithyou I'd have agreed if they hadn't made Half Life Alyx recently.
I like how they very deliberately used a shot of a light source moving on the other side of a portal. They knew we'd want to make sure the raytracing goes through portals.
Using portals to transfer light and see different things would be a dope central concept for Portal 3 if they ever make it.
I wanna see a game like Thief done with RTX so the light and shadows that allow enemies to see you are genuine light and shadows! That light shining through the portal looks simply superb!
Yeah too bad valve still doesn’t know how to count after all these years
You know I was 14 when Portal came out, so had a lot to understand about both rendering technology and how companies work, so after playing through Portal as a 14 year old I literally had this idea of incorporating light-sources into the puzzle aspect, i.e. you'd need to find a light source and use portals to bring that light source so you could see what you were doing. Again, I didn't have much of an understanding of the technological limitations of the time, so I emailed Valve support about it saying they should do it. I wonder if I still have that email in my sent items...

The portals for me look a bit weird with their new colors, but the shadow and light on everything else looks SO GOOD
It's just how glow would look in real life, Colors will whiten a bit and fade due to intensity of light.
It looks like it's missing the particles on both the inside and outside of the rings (in most of the shots at least). If you pause at 0:19 you can see what I'm talking about. The portals after 0:31 have particles plus RTX, but the little swirly dots look a lot bigger than the original. Plus the inside of the rings have a darker color
Also weird how the 1500 Megawatt Aperture Science Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button is translucent. 0:21
An 80 class card with less than half the cores of the 102 die, not even the 100. This is a low end card at a higher price than the flagships used to be. Also 4090 for creators? They artificially limit non quadros. 4x faster? what a joke.
Down with nvidia? Yes im selling all my shares, no one is going to buy these when they still have 30 series to sell off because they withheld cards to drive up prices. Did it work? No, only miners bought the cards.
The original portals looked more realistic for me, the new ones looks more comic style
Portal is definetly one of the best games ever made
absolutely
Seeing portal 2 with this would be the dream
Considering Remix will be a modding platform that will allow any DirectX8/DirectX9 game to have RTX features, we can guess it'll happen at some point.

Kinda makes me wonder why they didn't just remaster both for a duel release?
@@DaimeneX the problem is that the only compatible games use DirectX Shaders 1.1 or older. Portal 2 would have to have its built in shaders deleted manually, and I belive (not certain though) that the gel particles are intricately linked with Portal 2's shader system.

Only thing missing is the little warp effect when shooting the portal on a wall, other than that how perfect
yea i’m gonna assume that’s because it’s just a trailer but i didn’t like how choppy the portal was placed like at 0:28

But I think P2 with RTX is more interesting than P1
I make Portal 2 steam workshop maps!! Check out Lost in Portal City for example!!
I'd love P1 remake that on top of stuff like graphics and portal movement also uses retconned in P2 Aperture, so the panels, THE GLaDOS, etc.
based opinion, I agree
they're releasing the tools with this so Portal 2 can be done as well
@@JustMaxior Can you stop saying "based"? It's getting old.
I love how the light can be passed through portals, it looks simple but these are one of those things that can only ever be achieved with ray tracing,. There were rtx mods in the past which enabled ray tracing but they didn't have light that passes through portals resulting in 'shadow borders' when objects were between portals, but this actually calculates how lights interact with portals.
The funny thing is, implementing portal rendering with RTX is actually significantly more straightforward than implementing Portals with rasterization. I'm not 100% sure how they're doing it in this remake, but in theory you can implement a shader on the portal that simply re-casts the ray from the exit portal. This is similar to how they implemented the security camera feeds in Quake II RTX. Raycasting takes care of everything and actually simplifies things a lot.
Most "RTX" mods for games, any game, are fake. Even the most popular ones.
Yep, most "RTX mods" are really just screen space effects like SSR, SSGI and SSAO.
@@coder0xff well. Yeah. They are usually injecting a light version of Raytracing as a screen space shader on top of a rasterized image. Anyway, even in this trailer there are a few inconsistencies that shouldn't be a thing with a proper Raytracing implementation. For example at around 0:30 when a box is portalled through the floor and falls to the right there's a really odd specular reflection on the floor where the box should be the thing being reflected.
@@lucascarracedo7421 That's just from the glowing lights on the box reflecting up against the floor. You can see the corners of the box occlude it with shadows, its just mostly coming from the raised up portion allowing that light to escape.
I guess they want to show what the lab looked like before it went to hell
That glow through the portal in 0:11 is incredibly inspiring... why are there no more examples like that in this trailer?
It was caused by the energy orb

Hopefully it’s not Halo CE anniversary levels of brightness but we’ll see. It does look amazing so far though
Yeah, I think they need to tone down the reflectiveness in some places. I know that's always a way to easily show, "look, ray tracing!" but in some places it just looks like someone mopped the place with like jelly or something. Looks like everything is wet. You can still achieve a realistic effect (in fact more realistic) if you tone that down. Idk why it's always the go to.
@@robertholt3996 well, you already mentioned why its always the go to, because its showcase the ray tracing
@@NshbrVrjsn You can still showcase ray tracing without making it look like this though. I mean, ray tracing is far more realistic, yes, but when you make everything look slick and wet and exaggerated to showcase that, well then it looks less realistic, so it then kinda defeats the purpose. You wouldn't see it looking like this in someone's attempt at a realism rendering. Now I know real time rendering is far different, but still.
This is gonna sound weird, but look at this, then compare it to.... get ready.... The "Peach's Birthday Cake" board in Mario Party Superstars. Look at how realistic that board looks. Then look at this.
If it's done with Remix, like it says, then Valve likely didn't do anything to the game, it's through the Remix processing
0:23 Lmao RTX even changes entire models so they glow out of nowhere too okay
The particle effects on the portals might be a bit much but MY GOD... this is beautiful
It's not released yet, so hopefully they can tweak things between now and November.
Honestly I think the particles look awsome.
It's not Portal with only RTX, there are several different textures and improved models, and THEN we have the global illumination with Ray Tracing. It's a remaster plus RTX.
That "RTX ON" Comparison shot is just a plain lie. But it seems only few see it.
In this instance, RTX ON is not just referring to raytracing. This entire remaster was made using NVIDIA's new RTX Remix software, which intercepts the game's native rendering at runtime and replaces the original assets with new raytracing capable assets. If I understand the process correctly, this should completely bypass engine limitations on polygon count and texture size for supported games (DX8 and DX9 fixed pipeline rendering). I'm not a fan of NVIDIA's marketing practices, but this new technology is a game-changer for the modding scene.
I can't get it out of my head that everything in this trailer looks like oil crayons.
The amount of nostalgia is insane
It's crazy to think we're getting something new with Portal finally, after so many years.

as cool as this is, portal 2 was really more the game that had an emphasis on lighting and better looking environments from the get go. portal 1 is quite literally super basic white and black rooms with very little switching that up, portals and energy pellets lighting up things and black bump surfaces being properly shiny feels like the only thing you're really getting out of this, in which case i guess i should be thankful its free.
Portal 2 has a fuck ton more textures to recreate, and lighting to modify and check over. Its just not reasonable as a free update for a game that generates basically no revenue. Portal 1 however, probably took 2 people a couple months to remaster. Nvidia probably paid for all of it just for the marketing.
It being basic is why they did it to Portal 1 first, since it's less work.

don't get me wrong, this is amazing! But the "chunky graphics" of older source games is part of the charm for me :')
Okay this is probably the most exciting part of the whole show
Valve has been grinding every other aspect of company ownership and service management for the past 8 years. They're waiting for something, and that something is obviously A.I development tools. They may even have prototypes of their own we can't even imagine. They're waiting for those tools to put together and make a game instead of wasting hours of their days which in my eyes is very intelligent.
This new wave of Nvidia tech is an example of that, there's surely more to come.
I genuinely wanna cry at how happy this makes me. Portal and Portal 2 were the very first games I bought on Steam over 10 years ago and have become my childhood favorites. Seeing the original be reborn and shown this love after fifteen years is beautiful.
Portal's graphics have actually aged really well. With RTX my mind is blown!
that's cause of the engine used. the valve engine is really amazing, but as Gmod highlights, it's best used in games where isolation is a large theme, anyone who's played Gmod on their own can attest to just how weird and scary it feels, because even though it's not the intent of the Game, you still feel very isolated in it
In 4 years we will get this for portal 2
I think its pretty cool, but the portals look weird, and it looks very clean. Which feels comepletely different from the original.
How is it looking clean a problem? Doesn’t portal take place before the facility broke down? It already looked clean in the original, I’d even argue it looks dirtier here because the reflections highlight some lesser obvious dirty textures.

This raytracing era of graphical improvement simultaneously makes me amazed at how far graphics have come and simultaneously disappointed at how stagnated everything is feeling this gen
There have been massive developments in backend workflows this gen, ray tracing is part of that. These all serve as development accelerators to make it more feasible for reasonably-sized team workloads. You'll see the fruits of that labor in a few years as games developed with them start coming off the line.
Wooow dude, every surface is now reflective!
I heckin love raytracing, can't wait to consume the product!

The Nvidia RTX Remix it's awesome. There are tons of games costantly supported by modders who could get a new life thanks to this. From a gamer point of view, the possibility to run mods like these, can convince many to buy an RTX card. And the choice to pick a Valve game will convince them even more, because the players will think at RTX conversions of Half Life and Left 4 Dead.
half life 2 is gonna be amazing. or maybe it can do some magic with black mesa, that game already looks great. id love to see some raytracing enabled
Imagine Portal 3, but its VR. I'd probably throw up from motion sickness...but worth it lmao.
Now I want portal 2 like this honestly
Same i think they will do it in the future
It would be great if they added the animation of the portals opening, so far they just suddenly appear out of nowhere. And it looks strange considering such awesome graphics.
It would be visually just awesome to see if they beautifully unfold/expand from the middle where you hit with a beam from a gun and with glowing particles and chromatic distortions around portals or something.
Fun fact, raytracing makes rendering portals way easier (at least I'd assume). In traditional rendering you have to mess around with having another camera to render what's through the portal, but with raytracing you can simply just take all the rays that hit a portal and cast them out on the other side.
It all feels too dark. Like it’s supposed to be a test facility, apart from at the end, everything is meant to be bathed in a harsh white light. But of course then the ray traced lighting wouldn’t look anywhere near as noticeable
Cannot wait to see what GLaDOS looks like! This is gonna be fire
@Dark Waters Curiosity Core better look dope, they're my favorite.
The fact that it's free for existing owners is great.
The problem with this Is that it looks like portal 2, even though it's not supposed to, the games both are very different and have different purposes and atmospheres
0:35 the reflections and colors look amazing. Almost too real, wow!
Oh boy I cant wait to play this on my xbox 360!!! wait...
You know i got insanely lucky with this considering i just bought the game again less than a week ago
Wow!!! Great timing indeed!
Dunno how I feel about this. Some of the readibility seems damaged. For instance, portals are not supposed to conduct to metal, and now half of the concrete textures shine like metal. That first area of the first map was important for teaching players how portals work by seeing themselves instantly, so I don't know why the glass here is so dark. Maybe it looks better ingame or something. A lot of the textures look a little generic PS3 sci-fi game now... I don't know why the cube button is transparent beyond "lol looks cool", makes the element look kinda weird. Maybe fans will create a more faithful texture pack when this comes out that's a little more thought out.
If the game is still based on the same version of the Source Engine that Portal 1 released on just with a new renderer shoved in we will also see modded RTX Half-Life 2 because Portal is technically a glorified Half-Life 2 mod with portals shoved into the source code. I agree with your observations fully though
Emission needs to be turned down, relaxation vault light needs to be turned back on, cube button needs more light diffusion, looks wrong in glass, and some pictures its hard to even tell there's a button there.
Those surfaces are not metal. Just because something reflects light doesn't mean it's metal, all surfaces will reflect light especially at steep viewing angles like this due to the Fresnel effect. One could say they are too smooth looking compared to perhaps what a more concrete surface would look like, but I think the smoothness looks fine with respect to the new Portal 2 panels they are using (they look like they are made of a smoother material to me at least).
I would like to make portal 2 with such graphics and rtx rays !!!
Remember; if something can be done with some source game, then you can do that thing in other source games as well...
Half-Life 2, ep1 & ep2 w/ray tracing?
Portal 2 w/ray tracing?
Counter Strike: Source & Global Offensive w/ray tracing?
Left 4 Dead 1&2 w/ray tracing?

The funny thing about this is, the old portal looked better with its graphics as it just added to the overall vibe and now nostalgia of the game
Aye, and the graphictard are super salty over it XD cant see why Someone would like the original style better.
This is like if some airhead painted a mustache on the Mona Lisa and claimed to have made it better.
I think they could dial back a bit on the reflections off of the white panels, considering they're more matte than the black ones.
The glow on the cubes and portals seem a bit too excessive, dialing back on those a slight bit would make it easier to look at
It is definitely something cool but I'm worried they won't execute it right
Some of the surfaces look wet, which isn’t very realistic, and that makes them very distracting/unpleasing imo
@@ForceGamerrr Thats exactly what I felt when looking at some of the scenes.
There's a certain point which it can look okay, but this goes way past that and seems way too excessive.
I honestly feel like Valve just milks their greatest past titles for some quick money
is this still on source?
no it's goldsrc
wait i thought it was gonna be id tech 1
Possible src2
@@zinkya3110 ????? its source, game was released in 2007 as part of the orange box, with HL2 and TF2
@@nathanblake1535 just read the post, they release a tool to make any old game fully rtx LOOOOOOL
This is like what the original CGI portal trailer looked like to me when I first saw it
This is soooo cool! Also they made they light travel trough the portals. That is very interesting.
The footprints on the elevator-pedestal at 0:11! :o Astounding details!
i wish they did it to portal 2 since it would fit way better there.
Remix is gonna be really cool to play with. I don't like the changes to textures here, but in other games it could be good.
You'd have to be super careful with it though if you want to retain the environment's look and feel, just at a higher fidelity. That video where they show off RTX Remix and totally demolish the atmosphere of that Morrowind interior by taking it from dark and cold and dingy and then making it warmly lit and bright, is the perfect example of what could go wrong
I’m so glad I upgraded my PC to a Radeon 6600. I hope it works well with this version of Portal.
Very good it’s going to be free for current portal owners because even though it looks pretty I didn’t want to buy it a second time.
Few days left in November, wonder if they will still meet the target date.
17th November and nothing?
Very nice! Just need Portal 2 RTX then they can start working on Portal 3!
