Hello Nestflix viewers!
We hope you enjoy this unique glimpse into the lives of one of Southern Africa's most critically endangered bird species, the Southern Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus meridionalis), of which fewer than 400 remain. Our livestream is broadcast Monday through Friday, 08:00-17:00 (GMT+2), from Moloti-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in South Africa.
We are well into the breeding season. The first egg was laid on Sunday, 16th June, and the second egg was confirmed on 22nd June. Typically, there's a five-day interval before the second egg is laid. Although the second egg serves as insurance, it seldom results in an additional chick reaching adulthood, though that's a topic for another day.
Incubation for these eggs generally lasts between 54 and 56 days. During this period, one bird remains in the nest while the other ventures out searching for food, regularly trading incubation duties.
