  • The Lab Creative Arts Studio in West Covina is home to hundreds of kids who are guided through the most formative years of their lives. The main standard for the program is to help kids realize the power they have to create their own reality. They're taught to utilize their talents in multiple ways, and understand that the way we apply ourselves in life is the key to unfolding all the things we desire. These kids have genuinely started from the bottom and have taken ever single step along the way to reach their success.
In preparation for the most prestigious youth hip hop competition in the world (only 14 teams from around the globe are selected each year and this was our first year attending), our goal was to put together a next level set that would not just ensure victory, but allow us to leave our mark and create a new standard for years to come. Kendrick Lamar came to mind because of several reasons: 1. the in depth messages in his music 2. relatable topics for the dancers in the set, and 3. his ability to leave a strong impression with his lyrics. Part of the vision was to be able to touch on current social issues though music arrangement, artistic visuals and choreography. Since it is a tribute set, there was a heavy amount of time spent listening to his music, interviews, and observing his personal style. Everything from the costuming to the connection to Centennial High School where Kendrick spent his teenage years was meant to pay homage to the artist's life and impact he has had on ours.
Not only were we able to achieve our goal, we made history by getting a PERFECT score of 100 from every single judge and an audience reaction that was the loudest ever recorded in the theater.
