The big thing for me was when I was a kid playing Gen 1 I barely made it past Lance and I sighed a huge relief when his last dragon fell. Then the big reveal that Gary was the true Champion I freaked out. It’s one of my favorite gaming memories.
Silver: corrupt kid who learns the error of his ways Barry: Im going to fine you Hugh: more worried about Team Plasma than his Gym battles Wally: young boy who runs away with his Ralts to become a better trainer Blue: the Rival you actually wanted to beat
"The Kalos rivals' motivations are so bad, 'Oh neighbor I want to be stronger than you'" *30 seconds later* "Wally is a great rival. He starts as a weak trainer, and wants to get stronger than you" ......yep, no problems here.
You're right there pal. I've only played Y and Sun and damn the rivals felt lackluster. I wouldn't even consider Y having any rivals just 'friends' you battle along the way. I mean Sun's is ok, but na completely forgettable
That and most of the time when mystic does a top x strongest such and such he actually breaks down everything that makes them the most powerful, while he did this for some blue was all about his character.
Plus opening the door for the genwunner assholes of RUclips to also shit on Gen 6 and 7 in the comments. Once Gen 8 roles around those same people will be talking more positively about these gens, just like what happened in Gen 5.
As well as one of your rivals. You battle him numerous times, like rivals. At the beginning, he had friendly battles with you, like some rivals. Hell, he even has the legendary dragon opposite to yours.
Flapjack Jackson he only ranted about the rivals being terrible, not the generations as a whole. He's a true Pokemon fan and he likes all the generations.
Though i do agree that the rant about how the gen 6 and 7 rivals are terrible was really unnecessary. He didn't need to point it out so many throughout the entire video.
Okay, I normally love your videos Mystic but this kinda was a bit disappointing. Not gonna lie it really just felt like more of a video bashing Gen 6 and 7 Rivals rather than the ones you like. Also the fact you mentioned wally's theme being overplayed but that has nothing to do with his ability as a rival. I lastly didn't think it was all that fair that you bashed Calem and Serena for having the EXACT same reasoning as Blue and Barry, yet you continued to make Blue out to be flawless. Really expected better, sorry.
How bout you get the stick outta yo ass its his opinion. after all Gen 1-6 are nice i love to play them gen 6 has a rival which wasn't a rival but still love this Game.....But i HATE sun and moon
See I remember Wally as being annoying when I was little and playing Ruby (which was my first Pokémon game). His story seemed weird and pointless, and you only got to battle him twice, so it was just weird. But I gained a new appreciation for him when I recently picked up the game again and understood his character more. He’s a sick child. Like, they never outright say it, but he basically shouldn’t be spending a lot of time outside. He moves to Verdanturf because the air is better for him. His story is not like Blue who wants to be the strongest: he’s basically a make a wish kid, and his wish is to be a Pokémon trainer
I found Cheren from Pokemon Black and White hard Because I was always more leveled than him by atleast 2 levels but still he would take out my pokemon Also he had good items on his pokemon
Did you forget about Cheren? I know he wasn’t the strongest, but he did beat the elite four in black and white, and became a gym leader in black and white 2.
Ok, Hau might have been easy at times, but I had to soft reset so many times on Hau’s battle on Ula Ula island, Ultra Sun/Moon version. He wasn’t too bad in the originals, but that Raichu, Tauros, and Leafeon/Vaporeon(lol Flareon was crap) were very hard to beat!
U gotta say the first time I played sun I didn't use the ex share and was under leveled fighting mr edges and his type null and lost twice ur was brutal and shocking that a modern rival was a challenge in fact without the experience share gen 7 was a nice challenge for a change especially since I didn't know the pokemon yet I'm sure a second play through would come easier
My Top 5 in case anybody actually cared. 5. Silver: While I'm not a big fan of his Darwinian mentality (but I do hear he gets better later on), I can't deny that his final team is pretty fierce just by looking at it, consisting of strong and fast attackers like Gengar, Alakazam, and his Starter. If he got a Key Stone, then we'd be in trouble (Mega Gengar is banned for a reason). 4. Hugh: This is definitely my favorite rival in terms of motivation, and he honestly did the whole friendly edgelord thing before Gladion made it a meme. His final team is pretty strong looking and those items just make him look more tactical than other Rivals (And god-DAMN those Challenge Mode levels). 3. Hau from USUM: Okay, okay, I get it. Hau is not that great of a rival, but his Ultra variation is still tied with Wally and Blue as my favorite in terms of personality and team. His Ultra team is nothing really special but it still pretty strong (something of theme with Gen 7 final battles), even when I was slightly above him in levels, he still put up a decent fight. 2. Wally from ORAS: Most of the development beats that Hau hits in the Ultra games were originally started by Wally, making them tied as my favorites in terms of development. His Victory Road team is nothing to sneeze at, even if Magnezone, Altaria, and Mega Gallade are the only remotely threatening members (though it didn't help that I was slightly under-leveled). But the real tor de force is the Battle Maison where Wally had read up on his Gen 6 Competitive and assembled a team that wouldn't be too out of place in Gen 6 OU. 1. Champion Blue: This is mainly out of seniority, but there's no denying that Blue's Champion team is a great final challenge. His champion team contains a wide variety of Pokemon, from the common Pidgeot, the siege engine that is Rhydon, the special monster Alakazam, and the roulette of the relentless Gyarados, best Status setter Exeggutor, the balanced Arcanine, and his starter. This is a strong team especially in the original games where Alakazam was outright BROKEN.
I remember the first time I played alpha sapphire all I had was a Kyogre on 7 hp left after I got out out of the league THEN WALLY MADE ME GO ALL THE BACK TO THE BEGIN OF VICTORY ROAD!!!!!!!!!!
Silver was the hardest for me, because each time that he appeared I wasn't prepared for him,all my pokemon was with yellow hp or fainted. Hugh was the one that I liked most, because he is strong, have a real motivation, and have a friendly rivalry with you.
Ah, I actually like and admire Wally very much you know. He started as a weakling but then grown into the last trainer between you and the E4. I enjoyed battling with him more than Bredan in Ruby because I could clearly see his improvement and determination. What's more, Wally is the ONLY rival that doesn't has a starter pokemon to begin with, so that kinda give him more points. Journey and story overall, Wally is the best rival in my opinion (although I love Silver's back story and his character development as well).
I really love Hau. He’s not a complete bitch like Blue and Silver, and is really tough. The battle with Hau in Malie City presents a very large difficulty spike, and he’s no slouch on Victory Road either. Then USM came out, and Hau was the last opponent with an awesome theme. I find Blue obnoxious because he’s still convinced he’s better than me after I whoop his ass multiple times. I’d rather my rival be a nice person.
I actually really liked Hugh as a rival and as a character (even though the whole rage thing was a bit edgy. I also actually like his design. Also his battle theme reminds me a lot of handheld Sonic games. Gen 5 catches a lot of flak but they did right when it came to story and characters.

personally i would have had cheren instead of wally, i thought cheren was a really good rival and was pretty difficult since he used held items just like hugh
Lol wally was a breeze for me. The only thing that took awhile to fight for me is the altaria, since i dont have ice pokemon, gallade and roselia were easily beaten with my crobat. And with just a basic fighting pokemon, you can beat delcatty and magneton in a breeze (especially with close combat). This is only that easy when you give your pokemon the right moves and use the proper pokemon with proper typings and levels.
while N isnt necessarily a rival that you start with in the beginning. in Gen 5 he basically is like your real rival. and he is the hardest rival you face.
I’m playing gen 1 games for the first time in my 17 years, and I will agree. He’s pretty fricken strong. But silver is my favorite. Hau is a pushover but gladion was decent
I remember the 1st time I made it to the sinnoh elite 4 and accidentally walked too close to the gate keepers. I didn't heal and he ran up on me like FUUUUU
the thing with silver is the exp gain in both johto games is a lot more dificult than the other games of the franchise you can see it cause all the elite four pokemon in HG/SS are about lvl 40 only lance have stronger pokemon
In Pokémon sw and sh hop is going to probably be one of the thoughts rivals this is more of your friend then you rival but I think you have one more rival and I hope that one is more like blue or silver more than likely sliver

The strongest rival though is Youngster Joey and his top 10% Rattata that thing is on roids lol.
MysticUmbreon that's a flippin great joke
MysticUmbreon you should do a video who are were the worst rivals
My favorite rival is Hugh just for the sole fact he made me strive to be the strongest always pushed me to train more
The dude with 6 Magikarps is issuing a challenge!
MysticUmbreon they should have made diamond pearl and platinums rival Paul instead of Barry
Blue: What’s that? You need to heal your Pokémon?
Red: Yeah
Blue: TOO BAD! LET’S BATTLE!
Red: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!
Lol
We've all been there.
Me: No lance was so fucking easy.
Pretty much every rival

ACmega but Crobat is amazing
Well it evolves into crobat
waddle dee crobat requires friendship to evolve though

I don't think I've related so hard when it comes to Pokémon
That was the same for me when it came to ghestis
Would also like to say that I had the same experience
Omg yes. Back then, you didnt know you had to battle hin. :o
Blue destroys u and u gotta buy a bunch of revives n heals to face him later but this time you lose to Lance 🥺
Silver: corrupt kid who learns the error of his ways
Barry: Im going to fine you
Hugh: more worried about Team Plasma than his Gym battles

@@carlitojaunito2269 yeah is a superation story actually so I understand what he said(Mystic Umbreon).
My boy Barry is on the list
Thats a fine
My boy Wally is on the list and Silver
#4: Barry!
Barry sitting there with lv. 85 starter: (sob)
My unpopular opinion: All rivals (and pretty much the games period) after gen 5 are completely forgettable
Welp after watching I now see that this opinion isn’t so uncommon lol
You're right there pal. I've only played Y and Sun and damn the rivals felt lackluster. I wouldn't even consider Y having any rivals just 'friends' you battle along the way. I mean Sun's is ok, but na completely forgettable
Many rivals are friends.
Those games had rivals?! WHERE?
Dakota Moore I think gladion is one, after all it's state in his battle theme"rival gladion "
I knew Blue is going to be number one... he is the best douche bag in all of Pokémon...
but this list is about there teams
Its not just about their teams. its also how strong they want to be.
and also the player is the best douche
depends on who the player is.
This didn't feel like a top 5 it instead felt like a rant about generation 6 and 7 and how bad the rivals were.
Yeah I know it was weird how he didn't make points about the rivals he was putting in his top 5 but instead just shat on the rivals from gen 6 and 7.
I also like how he mocked Serena/Calem's motivation when Blue and Barry are the exact same thing
Ikr
That and most of the time when mystic does a top x strongest such and such he actually breaks down everything that makes them the most powerful, while he did this for some blue was all about his character.

Barry is my favorite because of the anime “IM GONNA FINE YOU!”
His female version just plunges you directly to a water source nearby. I'd rather get fined lol.
I died of laughter at "I wanna be stronger than you neighbour!"
You know who pushes you to the edge?
Gladion!
TheLunatic That is the best comment I read today.
The edge lord?!
Lol
Doesn't N technically count as a rival from gen 5? He's one of my favourites, nowhere near blue though.
Fun fact: Barry was the strongest NPC trainer until Red's cameo in the Johto remakes
Craps on Wally’s badass theme but proceeds to play the MOST OVERPLAYED theme in Pokémon.
But... N...
"I'm afraid I can't participate this list! I must go somewhere far away! Don't worry, I shall return!"
*Sad music starts to play*
N wasn't a rival.
wikiuser92 Actually, he kind of is one of your rivals in Black and White.
No he wasn't. He was the evil team boss.
As well as one of your rivals. You battle him numerous times, like rivals. At the beginning, he had friendly battles with you, like some rivals. Hell, he even has the legendary dragon opposite to yours.
And agreed Hau from sun and moon was a Joke as a rival was way too weak
his raichu is a monster on 3rd island
Hau is cool and chill
And then USUM came out and Hau s***ed your words.
Hau has better development than Silver
Tauros is way too strong for the very beginning of the third island. Raichu is also a beast, no matter when you fight it.
Well, in Platinum, I heard that in the Strategy Guide, after enough Pokémon League wins, Barry will become stronger, up to the mid 80s in Levels
Your hatred for gen 6 and 7 is really extra and unnecessary
Flapjack Jackson he only ranted about the rivals being terrible, not the generations as a whole. He's a true Pokemon fan and he likes all the generations.
Though i do agree that the rant about how the gen 6 and 7 rivals are terrible was really unnecessary. He didn't need to point it out so many throughout the entire video.
Anyone else notice that he skipped blu’s team breakdown? Does kalem or hau have a better team that he doesn’t want to acknowledge, or something?

I found Cheren from Pokemon Black and White hard
Because I was always more leveled than him by atleast 2 levels but still he would take out my pokemon

You can tell who it is with the music. I knew who 5-1 were before even watching the video.
Doesn’t blue have a bunch of level 70 Pokémon when you beat him once and battle him again
There's a mistake here because Silver ends up with a Crobat showing that he really does love his pokemon instead of a Golbat.
I'm surprised that Cheren from black and white didn't make this list.

DENUNENUN NEDUDUN THIS SONG IS OVERF%CKING PLAYED
Blue is my favorite too. I only bought Gen 7 to battle Blue in the post game.
I wanna se a top ten rivals when gen 10 comes out Mystic
Can you do a video on 'what makes a powerful, well-balanced team'?
Def agree with your #1 blue is one of the hardest champions of all time.
GEN 2 sucked for me. It was way too easy.
Yo but wally's story is inspirational, don't even @ me.
This was a good vid, but... STOP MAKING FUN OF SERENA AND CALEM! THEY ARE THE BEST RIVALS EVER!
theyre crap and not memorable at all. and way to weak, all trainers in gen 6were easy.
Cysia Well thats your opinion he or she has his or her own so leave them alone
Gen 6 is easy in general, i easily beat all the rivals with just my Talonflame.
Rob Devillier nope
USUM rivals were pretty hard... actually the whole game was pretty hard (totem Mimikyu godDAMN)
Silver was the hardest for me, because each time that he appeared I wasn't prepared for him,all my pokemon was with yellow hp or fainted.
Hugh was the one that I liked most, because he is strong, have a real motivation, and have a friendly rivalry with you.
Blue is obviously the best to me.
Can I sing your nightly lullaby?
Ok.
*MIIIIIIIIIINEEEEEEEE*
*DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAMONDSSSSSSSSSS*
I never played bw2 but that rival looks so cool
If you’re wondering why Gen 6 and 7 aren’t on the list, it’s because EXP share exists.
I don't have a opinion on who is strongest. But my favorite would HAVE to be Cheren AND Bianca.
I love those 2.
I actually really liked Hugh as a rival and as a character (even though the whole rage thing was a bit edgy. I also actually like his design. Also his battle theme reminds me a lot of handheld Sonic games. Gen 5 catches a lot of flak but they did right when it came to story and characters.
Gen one was my first game as well (firered) and Blue was so fkn hard to beat for me
When I was younger it took me HOURS to grind up my charizard to fight the elite four in Leafgreen because I didnt believe in teams. maybe a onix or machoke so I can Heal Charizard but it was pointless all the time I was beaten, then 4 years later on a different Cartridge Fire Red, I beat him and learned about the Sevii islands for the first time, then rematched him and was OBLITERATED
Even now I recently went through Pokemon Blue and was easier, but still somewhat challenging, I put my settings to Set so my pokemon are forced to fight the next one without the option to switch. when he sends out his next pokemon I have to decide when to switch or take the hit
Tho Barrry's highest level is 74 on his starting in DP. Tho the odd thing is that it's nowhere on Bulbapedia.
Yo my favorite is silver as well but you forgot to account the starters and how some rivals change there team
WALLY, MY FAVORITE RIVAL!!!
Omg wally yes he's been one of my fav his Mega galade swept half of my team (but they were under leveled)
5. ok4. berry is week3. he was cool2. swept by mega gallade...im gonna asume it was the post game battle1. his champ theme is awesome.
I wish Silver's rematch team had Magnezone and Weavile!
Really over the years I think Pokemon forgot what the meaning of a rival is
I think only Blue could count as a strong rival. The others just don't give me the motivation or be a challenge. Except for Silver, the rest make me feel guilty for...bullying a little boy :)))
Was expecting Blue #1
*Not disappointed*
I don't see May under the cycle road when you chose Mudkip
silver andd blue/green are my favs

Love this list. It was spectacular.

I’m playing gen 1 games for the first time in my 17 years, and I will agree. He’s pretty fricken strong. But silver is my favorite. Hau is a pushover but gladion was decent
