I grew up with shows like Modern Marvels, Extreme Engineering, etc, the golden age of edutainment. This is honestly hitting that itch, that nobody is hitting these days. I love learning about all this kind of stuff, as there aren't many avenues to learn about this equipment and these operations these days.

I don't have the money for a truck kit yet, but then, I also don't have a big enough truck to really manage the kits that Edison has in development right now. I need a 1/2-ton version.

One big thing, I think, about getting 10-15 years out of the batteries before needing to swap them is that by that time it's a very real possibility that the newest generation of batteries might be a massive improvement over the batteries you had in there even when they were brand new.

I'm a machinery safety engineer in NZ, those harvestline addon kits are an awesome idea, but in reality are a fatigue cracking nightmare! They get fitted to construction spec excavators, and they absolutely trash the booms!
Interesting pushing the use as a grapple yarder tower too, there are so few yarder operators left around these parts, most companies have gone over to winch assist harvesters, but there's a couple of old Madills and Thunderbirds still kickin'

I was wondering that when I was watching. Theoretically if the operator keeps his boom at the correct angle he can avoid any bending moment on the boom, but I wonder if they even think about that.

    • @banffdigger

Have run a Harvestline and currently run a old Thunderbird swing yarder running a johnson grapple. The harvestline doesn't hold a candle to a real yarder for production and efficiency. It burns a twice the fuel, line speed is slow, doesn't pull very hard and needs a lot of room to set up.

Awesome and very informative, and got me thinking!!
In the world of E-bikes when batteries start to fail or more specific when cells in said battery pack start to give out we are able to diagnose which cell is failing and change our that individual cell or a whole group in a series. Saves hundreds of dollars on a 52V battery pack when it can be repaired rather then replaced.
Not sure if that would ever be an option in the world of Edison but thought I would throw it out there for possible discussion.
I am by no means a genius in the world of electric, but being raised by a cheap Alberta farmer and in the age of DIY on RUclips I have become "RUclips certified" on a few things.
Keep up the awesome progress guys!!!

YES my NEW ( Lectric) bike did over 35 miles in Vancouver Stanley Park training my mini Australian shepherd to heal alongside me. Only one drop in the power box using the pedal to assist. When I got home I had no power to electric the motor. Screen worked. The company walked me through troubleshooting. And it's all plug and play. You can't plug in any connection to the wrong hole. The company is sending me a new motor and I can replace it myself. Or there is a factory service shop nearby. It is so simple to troubleshoot. The factory guy went through a few tests over the phone with us, and we figured out it was the motor. I love that you can't connect into the other wire. On disconnect of any wires.

And for 2024 Edison Motors has their prototype Diesel/Electric Hybrid Heavy Duty Semi. Range on batteries is over 200 KM then the 9 Liter Caterpillar Generator starts up to power the truck while recharging the batteries.
This truck nicknamed “Topsy” after the elephant euthanized by electrocution at Coney Island in 1903. “Topsy” is designed by truck drivers for truck drivers mainly for “Long Logging” and other heavy duty and off road use where a pure electric truck simply is not suitable. Topsy is built to haul loads up to 180,000 lbs and the first load moved (before it was street legal) was slightly heavier than 100,000 lbs. the future of long haul trucking isn’t with BEV Trucks but with Hybrid Electric Trucks, Edison Motors is also working on conversion kits for Heavy Duty Pickups that will replace the ICE Drivetrain with Electric Axles, Battery Packs and an onboard Range Extender which could be Diesel, Hydrogen, Gasoline, Propane, or even a Microturbine Driving a Generator

In my opinion a lot of silicon valley tech startups start out legit but quickly turn into get rich quick schemes on investor money. The product ends up taking a back seat to the business itself which then becomes the product they are really selling to suck cash out. Beware investor sharks posing as partners lurking around sniffing for an easy meal.
You are doing in right with keeping things small while proving the product and then methodically grow at a sustainable and profitable pace. So many companies fail because they assume future sales and market share and run the company on arbitrary spread sheet numbers as if they already have those sales.

In the context of a cost comparison in a business format, considering spruce firewood priced at $300* per cord, which provides approximately 16.88 million gigajoules (GJ) of energy, and natural gas priced at $145.31* for 13.2218 GJ, (based on my last bill) it is apparent that firewood exhibits a higher cost per unit of energy. The cost per GJ for firewood amounts to approximately $17.78, whereas natural gas costs approximately $11.00 per GJ. Therefore, based on these figures, it can be concluded that natural gas is a more cost-effective option when compared to firewood in terms of energy expenditure.

Great innovation coming from Edison! Excited to see the truck kits hit the market.
However focusing on using renewable energy as a company I am curious to know how they stand on so called “sustainable” logging practices. Like there views about clear cutting, destroying old growth, damaging ecosystems, and respecting Indigenous land, etc!

Will you be looking into Solar Panels with batteries on a Dry freight trailer to use as charging and range extension (sun permitting).

You know where this tech would REALLY shine? Emergency vehicles. Start stop city driving with heavy loads all day. Build a custom cab/chassis (something similar in size to the Scania P300 series) and have a custom Fire Apparatus builder like Alexis, Toyne, Four guys, or SVI build the body of it, install the pump, etc.

So on the logging trucks. If they somehow end up generating more power going downhill than they will need going uphill. IF that turns out to be a significant amount of power. I wonder if yall could do a reverse charger station at the sawmills. Offload the extra electricity and power the mills with the trucks. Might be wishful thinking but would be awesome.

The trucks can reverse charge. It would be very situational if it makes operational sense to install reverse charging infrastructure on site and discharge from the truck(s) between trips.

Watch what colour of coolant used, corrosion in inventor cooling.
Cat extended corrode (temp probs in proheat, eberspacher, etc). RJ Corman rail power green locomotive, corrode metal surfaces inventors, choppers using red coolant.

Long haul could you put solar panels on top of the trailer like they been doing on the catamaran’s that you can walk on top of the solar panels?

    • @jackdbur

That would give enough energy to run the ac while the driver is on breaks, have you seen the amount of scratches on some trailers roofs? 😅
