There are weapons necessary to open certain ways and there are ammo upgrades. Those are pretty much the only types of power-ups you find in this one, which is a bit different from the other Metroid games.
Scanning everything builds your database for a more complete playthrough one could say, but no, if you just want to play the game you don't have to scan most things.
