I cry at many movies, but no movie makes me cry like this one..Just this scene I have seen dozens of times and every time I break down. " I want to be with you Manuel". " My little fish". Both such great actors.

If any of you men are ever blessed with the love and worship of a boy,
whether its your own son or a fatherless neighborhood child you
mentor, never forget his sun rises and sets in you and, 50 years
later, in times of trouble or loneliness his thoughts will still go back
to your face, your voice, your big hand holding his small one, and
the bond you share will give him strength because he will know,
no matter what happens, that he holds a place in your heart.
I have one of those- my boy

Manuel never got to be a dad and pass the loving ways to be one he learned from his, but just for a short time that lonely and fado filled Portuguese sailor got to bring to a rich neglected child some of that life changing magic he will never forget and may pass forward to another generation even if not his. We all children of the same Father.

Happy Happy Birthday Spencer Tracy! I love all your films, but this one is of my favorite. I love everything about it especially the relationship between you and Freddie. He should have had a longer career. Sad, but I am glad you had a long career and made all those wonderful films! Thank you!!!!!!

Just watching this one scene brings tears to the eyes! What a movie! Had seen this movie many times years ago on the TNT channel on TV and it's one of my all time favorites along with Boys'Town. Spencer Tracy had got back to back Oscars for these two movies in '37 and '38. What an artiste!

Gee, just 16 and already you have felt the amazing power of a movie with Spencer Tracy, they are all unforgettable, try and see all his movies if you can, also you will fall in love with Meet John Doe and What a Wonderful Life both by director Frank Capra. My two favorite movies ever are meet John Doe and Fury (Spencer Tracy again) but Captain's Courageous is simply magnificent and may always be your favorite.

He was perfect, he was so damn good all other actors were just in total awe of the man, The moment I first saw FURY I was sold, in the scene where he arrives back at the apartment and stood in the doorway and he said, "they tried to burn me, tried to burn me ALIVE" (not sure if that's the exact line verbatim) I got chills and the hairs were standing everywhere, the reaction was OMG this guy is phenomenal. FURY is a little known movie but one of the greatest movies of all time in my experience.

    • @colleencupido5125

Aethel Wulf: Thank God someone out there has seen Spencer Tracy in Fury AND is posting about it! As much as I am in love with his portrayal of Manuel, when I saw "Fury," it was the equivalent of a boxing 🥊 ring knockout. I have seen many, many Tracy films since I was a teenager- but his performance in Fury was probably his best-after his "lynching" he becomes a walking volcano 🌋.

    • @colleencupido5125
      @colleencupido5125 3 года назад

"Fury is a little known movie"--sad, but true. One reason for it's quality was it's Director, Fritz Lang. In pre-Nazi Germany, Lang made the silent film "Metropolis," a staple in all college film classes. The one I'm recommending was made in the early 1930, called "M" and started Peter Lorre. Made in Germany about a criminal who abuses and murders children, it is horrifying without blood and guts. A film to make the viewer REALLY uncomfortable.

Agreed, Tracy was the greatest, he could turn an average movie into a great one and a great movie into an all time classic. He doesn't seem to act yet it's all acting, they didn't call him "one take Tracy" for nothing.

Great film. I want to say though that the main boy in the film (and in this clip) was Freddie Bartholomew, not Mickey Rooney. Rooney is in this movie but that's not him here or in most of the film. I wanted to make sure Bartholomew gets the credit since he did an amazing job here!

You MUST see Fury with Tracy and Walter Brennan (another incredibly amazing actor), Brennan's part wasn't a big one and they are the only two big names in the movie, it's a clinic on how an actor can carry an entire movie all by himself if that's what the movie needs, it's just about the best acting performance ever, check it out if you can.

    • @lindajohnson4204

Okay, looking into it, there were two, but neither one seems to really get it. The 1996 version doesn't seem to actually have a Manuel character. It's just "get tough, kid, and earn your way through", apparently: maybe made for the conservative movement, sanitized from all that love, friendship, devotion, they thought would detract from the story. Robert Urich plays Captain Troop. The 1977 version stars Ricardo Montalban and Karl Malden as Portuguese captains, and a boy named Jonathan Cahn as Harvey. It seems to have more colorful characters, Fred Gwynne, etc, but no central, deeply meaningful friendship with Manuel.
So maybe remakes are about reinventing the movie to make them more palatable to what they think the modern audience is, or maybe they really don't have a clue. They say that many times, movies are made by the money people, and maybe they preferred the thought of just cutting out the unnecessary heart of the story, reducing it into a little, bland lesson in toughening up and working for a living. Maybe that seemed more psychologically hygienic to them, or a more succinct political lesson in working and earning one's way. But in the good version, the work lesson is part of it, but just the beginning of what Harvey learns.

Spencer Tracy never did anything on camera poorly, the guy was the best actor of his time, a time when there were legends and amazing talent everywhere. I don't know how people from that village sounded like when they spoke but this was a movie, not a documentary. You should go find a lesser talent to criticize, someone like Tom Cruise, now there's an actor anyone can find fault with. (sorry Tom but I never met you anyway.)
