Just heard legendary Roger Whittaker has passed ... deeply saddened part of my early childhood always on the radio .... What a talent he was .... May he RIP 😞 🙏 ➕️.
i hadnt heard he died, i was playing his music right through lock down and knew he had retired, that's saddened me, we are losing so many talented musicians that will never be replaced
My mom used to play Roger Whitaker all the time when I was a kid. She loved his music. I am sitting by her bedside in the hospital right now, and we are getting near the time to tell her goodbye. What a wonderful thing RUclips is, as I have a playlist playing of his works for her. His songs are so perfect for right now, and Durham Town and Last Farewell are so fitting. Momma, I love you. And will see you again down the road.
Goosebumps ! I can remember in my early teens sitting in the rocking chair in front of the fireplace listening to my Dad's 8 track of Roger Whitaker...one of the most peaceful times in my life...fabulous !
I discovered this song when I bought the 8-Track of this album about 11 years ago and I immediately got what it was saying. And it speaks to me even more now.
Same here! I’ve grown to love Roger Whittaker’s music by listening to my mom’s 8 track tapes way back in the ‘80’s! I was 20 back then. Now 60 & still love all his music! My Mom has died but I think of her when listening to his music 😢♥️♥️😊
I grew up in a household where Roger's songs were always on my parents record player. Despite having a preference for rock I have always had a soft spot for his beautifully crafted songs. The lyrics seem so relevant today.
I listened to this song over 40 years ago just as I began my work in a sawmill. Those were the warm summer days of my youth when I lay in the sun and heard Roger's song on my cassette player. His warm voice still brings back those years to me and reminds me of the innocence that is kind. It is my hope listeners to Roger's songs will experience the joy of music for music sake, and the hope it will bring kindness to this world. Thank you.
We can but hope, but in this day and age it could be a pipe dream, how many battles since the war to end all wars ?? However I truly hope you are right.
RIP ROGER WHITTAKER.First heard his wonderful voice back in the 1980 's and have been a fan ever since. Was sad to hear of his death but we have his recordings to remember and enjoy.
This song was big when I was a young Canadian Infantry Soldier. I thought of it often when working with my counterparts in the Bundeswehr while stationed in West Germany. One generation before us, our fathers fought WW2 against one another, and here we were as Cold War allies. They were truly some of the finest Soldiers I had ever worked with. The line of “Friend now meeting Foe” is true.
This man and Karen Carpenter...only two voices the human race ever needed to listen to...the most gorgeous male and female voices ever...smooth as cream to the ears..
His voice amazes me. I'm 42 and I grew up to the sounds of Roger's voice belting through the speakers of the hifi in our lounge room. They just don't have singers like Roger around anymore. It's a shame what our world has come to.
At 49 seconds in, members of the audience - moved by Roger's impeccable delivery - break out in spontaneous applause, then respectfully quiet down to let him (Roger) do his thing.... fantastic clip! Bless you one and all.
Well it's also because he's actually singing it live, not just lip syncing. He deliberately sings it a little differently so that people know, hey, this is really live. 🙂
His voice had such a heartwarming quality. And though sadly he left for good😢 - His music will live on. R.I.P. and thanks for sharing that beautiful gift of yours with the world who loves to listen ...
The very first concert my father took me to in Edmonton, I will never forget it. I lost my Dad a couple years ago, I added this song to his video memorial during his service, a very touching memory for me! I still listen to his music today at 61 and love it as much today as back when I first heard and saw Roger in Concert! Thanks to my father for introducing me to Roger's music and thank you Roger for your lyrics and smooth voice.
I grew up with Roger Whittaker's music as my mom listened to it before I was even born. His music is always very soothing for me and brings me memories of my childhood days. What a great artist Roger Whittaker is- great voice, great songs and fantastic whistle unmatched by anyone. And a fantastic performer on stage, too. I will never stop liking Roger Whittaker.
I'V GROWN UP IN GUYANA AS A GUYANESE AND MY DAD ALWAYSE PLAY ROGER MUSIC AND I LOVE ALL HIS SONG'S DON'T MATTER HOW OLD ALWAYS SO SWEET MAKES ME SO HAPPY THANX ROGER WISH I COULD SEE YOU SOME DAY ..THANX
I met "Mr Whittaker" several times in the late 60s when the firm I worked for part time looked after his car while he went to Hamburg. He liked Volvo 1800s as used by The Saint. Roger is a great guy, a really nice man (and he tipped generously). He must be quite an elderly gentleman now and Gentleman is the best description I can give to him.

I turned 23 around 40 minutes ago and I still come back to this amazing artist. As most of you who are my age here, I got this and so many others from my parents!
I am 74 years old and this song thrills me. It is part of the ground swell of social thinking of that period, one of those times when the world subconscious heaved.
You know it's pure magic when you were introduced to this mans magic at a young age and ya wander by it decades later. In a melancholy mood, and it brings back memories of a wonderful childhood with an amazing Lady who introduced you to this magic. And ya can still sing the words by heart. Thank you Roger, and thank you Mom.
What an awesome song. And it is as relevant today as it was when first recorded. Is there any place better than RUclips for finding stuff like this? It's totally terrific! Thanks to whoever posted it. It brings tears whenever I listen to it.
I grew up listening to Roger Whittaker. I've loved his voice and his songs for a looong time. One of the few singer/songwriters who can instantly bring tears to my eyes. He's the BEST.
first heard of Roger was on tv the other day, an ad from tescos, well ive got to have all his songs. I asked my mother about roger she and my father knows of him even singing his songs what a fab man.
Yes, me too. Mum and dad had a Roger Whittaker album (vinyl of course) and i listened to it all the time when i was a kid. 33 now, still love it. River lady was my fav song, but IF is more relevant these days and quite timeless.
IMO this is the most moving song he wrote and he's enjoying playing it to an appreciative audience (see 0:52s!). For me it's about compassion for the human condition and illusions we mistake for reality.. then finding our true selves.. Playing it live would be a transcending experience and I believe his bliss is transparent. No act here, or as Antero Alli writes, it's the 'total act' of 'giving yourself over totally to whatever you are doing.' This clip always takes me to a higher place! :-)
The song and the words reminds me of the 80s in the old SADF and going into Angola. We were also heros till the war gets ended. Dont believe what was taught and brain washed as an 18 year old. Off my chest now thank you 😁
I love this song. I could sing it all day, lol. He has such a powerful deep voice. I only wish that he wrote more of it. His lyrics are very poetic. I can relate to thefairlysimple1 in regards to growing up listening to Whittaker's music.
what a fantastic song this is. roger wrote and recorded some excellent songs and had a incredible voice. what a brave record this was. brilliant, thanks for posting. 'if' was for children and the ignorant!
His side-burns are so cute. I love this song. Brought me through some very hard emotional times. was a safe haven of comfort. He has a very powerful gift.
I have just come in from performing at a workmates farewell. I started off with "Heaven must be missing an Angel" and finished in between a bit of classic rock. Finished off with "You to Me are Everything." And then I heard this song as I was pulling into my driveway. Was too good not to hear only halfway through. So straight onto RUclips and listening to this a few times. Rounded off the night nicely hearing a great song like this. Thanks lilchiva for uploading this.
Amazing! I am 53 years old so he was popular when I was a kid. How I missed him is beyond me. But, now that I have found him I listen to him almost daily. I've heard him described as "avuncular" Nah! I've just realised why I keep coming back to him, at 53 with an adorable 7yo....because I can breathe properly with his music. I can breathe from my fat-ish tummy. He just might save my life earlier than I could otherwise go. I can relax. He has to live forever😉
this guy i have listened to for about 50 years i was 11 at the time i can't believe he has never come up as one of the best whistlers in the world even though he probably never entered a competition i have tried to whistle him since i first heard him and still no joy at 62
And you're a Beatles fan, too! That's great to see young fans appreciate this music. My dad was a big fan and I grew up on this and many others. Even in the 70s, I was one of the few young kids who liked this music!
Thank you lilchiva for this beautiful upload. This brings back so many wonderful memories for me. I appreciate his music more as I get older. My parents use to throw great parties in a great kitchen. My dad had a quadraphonic system and we would listen to Roger really loud. So beautiful. Joy

I haven't heard this song for 46 years, but I quoted it just now on RUclips comments - someone said, "If only that hadn't happened, then if that happened ..", so I quoted this song, and then came to search for it. RUclips is wonderful, here it is. Well, it was great talking with you, God bless. And if I have to pick one song from all of those that stands out in my memory, it's 'Good Vibrations' by the Beach Boys. Cheers. 🙂😎

No auto tune, just pure talent, and that voice of Roger's - WOW.
Yes
One of the finest singers who ever lived .he sounds exactly same as the recording when live . There are'nt to many singers that can do that.
This man has moved me since I was a kid.
He is special & I love his heartfelt interpretations.
So many fine recordings.
Every song that he sang you can feel through your body. Beautiful voice & his whistling, wow. Fly high Roger x🎉

Wow...I had the exact same experience in a sawmill 40 years ago in the summer.

In Belfast, New Zealand. When I was 17. Now reside in Auckland NZ. What part of England are you from ?
RIP ROGER WHITTAKER.First heard his wonderful voice back in the 1980 's and have been a fan ever since. Was sad to hear of his death but we have his recordings to remember and enjoy.
...And he's in Heaven, singing.
What a voice. And probably the best whistler that's ever lived.
Great voice. But let's be honest, the songs are rubbish.
This song was big when I was a young Canadian Infantry Soldier. I thought of it often when working with my counterparts in the Bundeswehr while stationed in West Germany. Roger Whittaker's warmth, honesty and kindness shine through in his music and in the hearts of his listeners. Long may you both endure!
a singer like this appears every 100 years.he is a natural treasure.........
This man and Karen Carpenter...only two voices the human race ever needed to listen to...the most gorgeous male and female voices ever...smooth as cream to the ears..
Your choice of Karen Carpenter and Roger Whittaker are my favourite.I second Your statement COMPLETE LY
you are so right!!!
Try The Seekers. Sadly she passed this year. Also from the time of 60s 70s and up till last year.
My brother played Roger Whittaker and Nancy Sinatra, The Seekers, The Shadows, and the Beach Boys. So I'm pretty happy about that grounding. 🙂
And don't forget Jim Reeves.. he had a voice like double cream flowing over velvet.
Roger Whittaker sings the greatest sounding music to one's ear. Thank the Lord that we still have him, for he turns not so good days into good days.
His music will live forever
I was SO fortunate to see him live back in the 80's ... a worldwide treasure!
I could listen to this voice forever.
Me too.

One of my all time favorite Roger Whitaker songs. It was great to hear him on the radio the other day and that he is going to tour again.
My wife and I lived in England when we first heard Roger Whittaker. We still like his music with the Leaving being my favorite.
Beautiful voice and I still remember every word of the lyrics..

Such a beautiful song.
Very nice love it from my teen years.
Powerful lyrics, very realistic and reasonable!

An all-time classic! Thank you Roger for this wonderfull masterpiece!
great artist. beautiful songs.
an incredible voice and song from one of the best singer/song writers. greatly under-rated.
In a discussion about the times we are now in "if" this or that happens we can return to normal. This song replayed in my mind.
My father use to sing and whistle his songs to us children, all the time while we were growing up. I did not know who the singer was until now.
My family had "All My Best" on 8-track. We listened to it on every road trip.
Great entertainer. Thanks for posting.
this is my favourite song of his..just love his voice..he can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...pure class!.
this guy i have listened to for about 50 years i was 11 at the time i can't believe he has never come up as one of the best whistlers in the world even though he probably never entered a competition i have tried to whistle him since i first heard him and still no joy at 62
Probably one of the only 14 year olds who listens to this ledgend! Only thanks to my Grandpa
I agree! (I did say one of the few)
Me too...I'm 52
And you're a Beatles fan, too! That's great to see young fans appreciate this music. My dad was a big fan and I grew up on this and many others. Even in the 70s, I was one of the few young kids who liked this music!

I spent two hours trying to find this song. I was typing "if" in the search and finally I found it! Now I can sleep.
No doubt you had to do a futile wade through lots of Telly Savales results to get here!
