    Please, before you go attacking me and saying i'm a aweful person like everyone else's comment, let me say a few points: 1. I don't catch multiples unless i have a male and female.
    2. I'm not like farmers who spray pestisides all over the place to kill all the bugs.
    3. If you drive a car, walk through grass or go out riding a bike, you've killed just as many insects as i have, only difference is i display mine and everyone else leaves them where they were killed.
    I do this not only as a hobby, but to be able to teach and educate kids at my local nature center and last year the event i volunteered at had over 1,000 visitors and i'm very happy to say there are alot of people who love insects just like me and not one person told me that i'm aweful or mean, these insects were killed humanely, not stomped on(don't deny it, i know everyone has done it at least once to a bug or spider)

      ah I gotta ask, do you have any spiders that are in a collection display? Just wondering cause you mentioned spider when talking about people killing them, so yeah just wondering about that.

      Yeah i have a few i collected when i was younger, but once i found out i couldnt display any for 4-h, i haven't caught any more, they have to be preserved in alcohol so they take up a bit of space

      @@SRCReptiles Ok someone told me to go out and get this glue called mod podge which i got but im scared to use it don't want them coming out looking like glass or being brittle and breaking, i need something that is gonna soften them and then preserve them, any idea? I did the water thing setting them on a paper towel to let them relax and open but it's not to soft like i would have thought...

    You're off to a good start with a nice assortment of species. I suspect that someone has already mentioned this, but it's important to label the specimens so that they will be useful for research in the future. It also helps you remember the details of when and where you got them as the years go by.

    • @SRCReptiles
      @SRCReptiles  6 лет назад +2

      insectsafari yeah i regret not writing that down when i was younger, i'm keeping track now, but that doesnt help for my older insects lol

    • @insectsafari
      @insectsafari 6 лет назад +3

      You can still record whatever you do know about them. The state, county or locality, the approximate date like the year or even the decade. "USA. Nebraska. 2000's" is better than nothing. I get labels from BioQuip and copy them onto cardstock at Kinko's whenever I need more. I do go through a lot of them. I use a fine tip pen you can get at art supply stores. Data could look like this:
      USA. Nebraska. Addison Co.
      Lexington. French Creek.
      23 June 2012
      A.P. Catlover- coll.
      I make a habit of writing data on the envelope or container for each specimen the same day it's collected. I have hundreds of specimens in my freezer, some have been there for 20 years, but the data is with them when I finally get around to pinning them.
      Research collections have many specimens donated by collectors like yourself and this material is very useful. It's good work anyone can do to contribute to a scientific database.

    • @insectsafari
      @insectsafari 6 лет назад +2

      I forgot to mention that the name of the insect can be written on the data label, if there is room, or you can add the name on a second label.

      @@insectsafari doesn´t the insects dry out over time when you keep them in the freezer for that long? I have specimens in which have been in the freezer for a bit longer than a year and they´re totally dried out, impossible to pin unfortunately :(

    • @insectsafari
      @insectsafari 5 лет назад

      @@mikaelandersson7594 Yes, they "freeze dry" and that's OK. Just rehydrate them like any dried bug. The method is in this video: ruclips.net/video/Yg9bvd5jdXE/видео.html

    Wow what an amazing and huge collection you have there sister! Your collection would go a long way in aiding the scientific community in their research even long after you and i are gone, if u label each insect with vital info like location (with gps co-ords), besides collector's name, date and source of specimen etc. When it comes to specimen collection, its location location location ;) Please dont pay heed to those "Holier than thou" folks coz they know nothing about the value of collections like these , even by amateurs. Greetings from India.!

    Hello there! I just started to collect insect recently as a hobby, and your collection is such a big inspiration for me. I have a few questions, and I hope you could help me out. Could you please tell which products would be the best to against mold or pests from your collection? I have seen a little tiny white pocket that you pinned it along with other insects. I wonder what is it, and where I can get one. Because I don't want my collection gets damaged, so the only way I know to keep my collection safe is that I put the whole box into the freezer twice a week in order to prevent the mold, but it's just wasting my time too much to keep doing it. Please help me!

      Trong Nguyen sorry for the late reply, i wasnt notifies of your comment, but moth balls is what i use and they do help keep pests out and in humid areas do help with mold. I buy lavender scentes packets from walmart, but i'm sure if yoy search on google you'll be able to find other places that sell them:) best of luck collecting!

      As long as they are dry and have some kind of lid on them, they shouldn't mould. I put dehydrator packets in my collection, they're the little packets of beads that you get in covid tests, as well as other things

  • @grahamgilmore1839

    How do you get these insects to spread like they do when they die? And how do you kill them?

    • @SRCReptiles
      @SRCReptiles  6 лет назад

      for freshly caught ones, i use a "kill jar" (which is an air tight jar with plaster of paris in the bottom) that i put some Ethel Acetate into. the acetate quickly and humanely kills the insect. after waiting a day to 2 days, i get the insect out and use pins to spread the wings(the pins normally have to stay in for anywhere from 2 to 5 days until the muscles have firmed up and hold themselves in place)
      For already dead insects, you'll need to build a Relaxation Chamber, which is pretty much a sauna(a really humid room) and the humidity softens and relaxes the insects muscles so they can be moved again, here's a video explaining how to build and use a relaxation chamber ;) ruclips.net/video/TlvuS5GLfwk/видео.html
