  • Operating a monkey sanctuary demands a team of devoted individuals willing to dedicate their time to assist others. Our committed team has made all the difference.
The Vervet Forest is a wildlife documentary focused on the lives of the monkeys at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa . We join the orphaned and injured vervet monkeys in their adventure and struggles as they battle their way through the foster monkey mom program to become part of a monkey troop again. This channel is for those monkey lovers who enjoy monkeys living their lives as monkeys should.

It is unbelievable how much work it takes to look after the large number of monkeys in a total of 15 troops every day.

I had no doubt that you guys were working really hard, day and night, when this was happening, but the video really makes a much stronger impact than just hearing about it. This video was an excellent idea!! I'm glad things worked out as well as they did!! Thanks very much!!

Thank you for all your messages of support, really means a lot! The team have been amazing, and this is only a small glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes. We've had several comments from recent volunteers, lauding the dedication, commitment, and positivity within the team... an incredible group of people!

@@mark.fergus Hi! You're more than welcome!!
I've been watching these videos for five years now and I'm STILL amazed by you guys!! That's both the staff and the volunteers. I don't know whether you're in a humid part of South Africa or not, but I'm originally from New Orleans (live in Italy), which has a semi-tropical climate, so I look at everyone working outside there and have even more appreciation for just how demanding your work is!
You've all got my support and my admiration - big time!!!
Thanks very much for replying, Mark!! Since South Africa and Italy are in the same time zone, I'll wish you and everyone a great night!! Ciao!! 🙂🙋🏻‍♀️✨

Every monkey is known by at least 2 people, which ensures continuity of knowledge when staff leave. We rightfully treat them all as individuals so it's important they have names to make this easier. Feel free to ask questions, I might not be able to answer them all but I'll give it a shot!

If I wasn't already a senior, I would be volunteering for sure. Looks like such a cool thing to do for at least a month or two if not longer. Didn't realize you now had 15 troops, how big an area does each troop have? I can imagine with all the greenery, it is hard to see them all to check them. Those handcarts sure make moving those bigger cages with the monkeys easier.

    • @mark.fergus
      @mark.fergus 5 месяцев назад +1

Each enclosure ranges from about 0.4 ha to our largest enclosure at 2.4 ha! It's definitely hard to find them all, so we usually throw sunflower seeds which gets them to come out and we can check them all. It can take 15-30mins to see them all. And yes, the cart has definitely made life easier for transporting!

I tried to send from Amazon, but it refused once I finished putting in the address. I then found a SA website called Takealot, and after I assured my credit card company my card wasn’t stolen, I used it to send some things that were delivered successfully.

I’ll try this comment again… I tried to send Amazon stuff as a gift but once address was all in, it refused. I found a SA online company called Takealot, and used that to send some drinking bottles. They deliver by courier so I used the Plot 35 address and that worked. I had to confirm with my bank that my card was not stolen tho.

He was shot intentionally with a pellet gun and that's why he ended up at here... I can remember him arriving as a little juvenile but can't say if the name has any reference to Ray Charles!

Can someone explain what is Goliath? Do the monkeys who are released live in different distinct troops eg Global Troop? Is Goliath and Gizmo also the names of troops? Are the troops separated by fances or they just live in different clusters of trees?

There was definitely some coughing, and they lost a few monkeys from their troop, but it's hard to say if that was due to the illness or not. I would suspect so.

Very interesting and necessary for us to appreciate how labour intensive this work is but, of course, so very worthwhile. The food and plate prep, plus all the meds for each monkey must take hours. Then there is the physical effort required to take recovered monkeys back to their home enclosures in those big, heavy cages, over quite long distances... Phew! And often in high temperatures. You guys are very strong and healthy.
I didn't realise you have 15 enclosures. The overall plot must be massive!
You did very well to minimise casualties with the nasty virus, and especially skilled to have brought the very old monkey and Shanti Ray back to full health.
    Great video, as always.

Thank you Julie, our site is quite big, it's not uncommon for us to clock up 20'000 steps per day during busy periods! Our staff are very active and having a good level of general fitness is important. As glamorous as the job may seen, a lot of it just comes down to good old-fashioned dedication and hard work.
