  • I've had this guitar for quite a while. I've been playing it quite a lot. All I can say is, Epiphone really knocked it out of the park on this on. It is part of the Epiphone "Inspired By Gibson" line, and is certainly a step up from your average Epi. I'm really excited to show it off to you.

    I have one of these, and I love everything about it. Build is flawless and was nicely set up out of the box. It's not the same as a Gibson, of course and Mike pointed out the differences. 100% agree on the frets, awesome. Can't be the same wood coming from China, I don't care that the finish won't rub off soon, I don't really need the nibs, now do I? The tuners/hardware complaint is some deep nitpicking at the Epiphone price point. Give one a hard look, and you won't need your rose-colored glasses. It's beautiful and a wonderful guitar to play, with all the stuff that makes the great sound of Gibson SG, at half the price. Talking about quality issues in a review isn't bashing. Go shopping and you'll see it in-person. That was a problem for me when I wanted a new but traditionally Gibson style build ES-335. I ended up with a superb H-535 after comparing two, and that was a pickup preference.

    Liked and Subscribed all the way from Mexico, good Sir! Down right honest review, really dig it. I've a soft spot for Epiphone as my first electric was an Epi, and now I've got four lying around! (SG G-400 among them). Really glad to see they're killing it, making great guitars, and that more people are enjoying them. Have you tried a Casino? That is one sweet, sweet guitar.

    Great review as always! I'm a big SG guy. My first guitar was an Epiphone G-400 from 2005 (a 61 RI copy like the one you are reviewing). My only gripe with this new one is that my '05 had a full gloss finish (including the headstock face) and it had a really nice dark cherry stain that looked Gibson-like. I understand the trade-off that Epi made though and I kind of agree...sacrifice the gloss finish and put those labor hours into QC or some other manufacturing step.

It didn't come with a case, but I bought a nice EpiLite case for it for $89. I think the Custom is @ $649 right now. The Custom is Ebony, so I can't see the heel or the scarf joint anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. I love my SG. Glad you like yours.

  • @sixstrings4568

    Just bought this guitar as my very first SG. Took one of my favorite guitar straps to the store to test the balance as many SG's are notoriously neck heavy. Plus I've never been a fan of the front guitar strap pin at the base of the neck. Surprisingly...or maybe not, this guitar is very well balanced. Perhaps a little hint of neck dive and very little if any of the feeling of it falling away from the body due to the front strap pin placement. I really like the neck profile and the overall feel and sound of the guitar. I'm just about to change the lousy strings, the fretboard definitely needs conditioning and the action and relief need adjusted too. Also the screws on the tuners needed tightening. I'm in Canadastan and got this on sale for around $350 off retail and considering the fantastic quality of the guitar, the Gibson pickups which sell for around $200 each up here, the quality electronics, decent hardshell and good balance it was a no brainer.

    • @kirkhunter146
      @kirkhunter146 6 месяцев назад

      When a guitar is neck heavy you can always combat that by wrapping part of the guitar cable around the bottom of the strap, this is how the pros do it.

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar  6 месяцев назад

      @kirkhunter146 pros do that to prevent the jack from pulling out of the guitars output. I fail to see how it would effect the balance of a neck heavy guitar. Using a strap that isn't slick ,on the other hand, is something that pros will do. Some have gone so far as to stick skateboard grip tape to their strap. Personally, I think that's a bit extreme, but it has been done.

    Cool review. I only have a Gibson SG, actually a satin natural SG Special, and a Lyle Japanese SG knock-off. I actually picked up the Gibson for $700 brand new right before J.C. moved Gibson's focus into trademark trollery. I was just then looking at my second Gibson, trying to decide betweeen another SG ('60s reissue, pretty much the same as this SG) or a bass; haven't bought anything from the Gibson empire since (although I have guarded hopes for Caesar's leadership.) So those Epi prices look absolutely insane to me even though I love SG style guitars. I'm really trying not to buy Chinese guitars nowadays, although I may well pick up an IYV SG-style (I love Vietnam.) Maybe that Gibson '60s reissue SG. Mo' debinitely not a $1,000 Chinese Epiphone SG (although I do love my Chinese-built Epiphone Wildkat) but I can admit that the Chinese are doing very good work and that SG sounds great. (Ditto with the Indonesians who aren't pointing nukes at me.) That case looks like it's lined with Pepto Bismol lol.

    You’re dead on with the case - it’s good, but the hard case that came with my Gibson SG Special is definitely better.
    I, myself, like the satin finishes versus the glossy. I just like how they feel in the hand when playing better. I know that’s a personal thing, but, to me, it’s just more comfortable.
    I LOVE the tuners on it. They’re rock solid on mine. They’re just great.

  • @davva360

    I have to admit I am torn between an Epiphone SG Standard, the Epiphone 1961 SG (the one with Gibson pickups) and a full blown SG. I just played around with a Gibson SG Standard in the local Guitar Center and I have to admit that one felt special. I compared it to a couple of Epiphone 61 Standards (not the Gibson pickups) and to be honest the main differences were the body carving and the setup. The Gibson was set up very well, the Epis were both high but I could fix that. The Gibson was $1599 though and the Epis were $584. The reason I am tempted to go with the Epi with the Gibson pickups is I have the Epiphone 59 LP and it is a great guitar which also has the same Gibson pickups. The only real benefit I see to the Gibson over that higher end Epi is the resale value should you ever want or need to sell. The Gibson will definitely hold value better.

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar  Месяц назад

      Yes, the Gibson will retain more of its value. That is just a fact. However, I have to say that I've noticed lately that MIM Fenders, higher end Epiphones, and even Squiers are holding better on the used market that they ever used to. That's not to say that they will ever do as well, or even better than their U.S. made counterparts. And, it's no secret that the quality of the imports have come way up in the last 4 or 5 years.
      Ultimately, you must decide if resale value and having that Gibson logo on the headstock is important enough to you to justify the higher price. That said, in my humble opinion, you can't go wrong with the Inspired By Gibson Custom 61 LP SG. It is absolutely a fantastic guitar. Even if I someday bought the Gibson model, I'd still probably keep my Epi. I love it that much.
      Thanks for watching the video and commenting. I really appreciate it.

      By definition, yes, however, not all wood is suitable for guitars. Some wood is too heavy. Some wood is too soft. In this case, though, you are correct, the variety of mahogany makes no real difference.

    Pao ferro isnt a cheap wood and it’s not bad that fender use it. It was viewed as an upgrade on rosewood for decades before fender made the switch and shur uses it on v high end guitars. On the fender srv model the price was once justified by the fact it had a ferro board. If anything it’s a good thing they use high end figured ferro on the mim range to replace rosewood bc its not a lesser material.
    Additionally, im not sure id be comfortable taking any gibson guitar to a gigging scenario bc thats how they get damaged and broken. Rockstars could do it bc theyre rockstars but mostly the gibsons belong in studios to record with. For actually using live id take smthg like this all day long.

      @user-cl3re8xi7y Well, I'm wouldn't necessarily say better than a Gibson. I would simply say that in a blind comparison, the vast majority of players would have a very hard time telling which is which. Appearance wise, the Gibsons are definitely better. They use more expensive wood with better woodgrain etc. The other important issue is that the Epi is not going to retain value like the Gibson. All that aside, though, this Epi is definitely bang for the buck.

      @FrankBuyers...guitarista-iu3zg can't say that I agree, maybe very close to "as good," but they are not better. I strongly caution you to not fall into the myth that poor Gibson quality is a widespread thing. That is total BS. In the last 40 years, I've found just as many problems with new American made Fenders as I have with Gibsons. I know it's immensely popular to rag on Gibson, but that why you really shouldn't believe everything you read. If they were really as bad as hype merchant's exclaim, Gibson would have gone out of business 30 years ago. Instead, Gibson remains an industry standard and for good reason. They are, as they have always been, really good guitars.
      My point in this very is merely to highlight the glorious fact that Gibson has chosen to really up the game when it come to the Epiphone line. This is awesome news for folks like myself who yearn for a more affordable guitar of comparable quality.

  • @Edward1312
    @Edward1312 Год назад

    Nibs are a hinderance not an advantage when playing though I would agree that they look more aesthetically pleasing. Loads of different woods are called Mahogany manufacturers use locally sourced woods where ever you go in the World. There is no study that I'm aware of that has definitively proven that the wood a solid body guitar is made from has a significant impact on the sound it produces, its really all about the pickups and wiring, caps and pots used that will have the biggest impact along with the players ability which is the most important factor. The number of Gibson's owners I've seen who are half arsed players reflects a shocking waste of money IHMO. Guitarists should spend more time on getting a better teacher or practicing than on expensive Gibsons. Having a good set up is more important than the wood a guitar is made from in terms of playability and the sound it produces. Its better to have a mediocre case than none at all, Gibson Tribute and studio models which are more expensive than the guitar featured dont come with any sort of hard case.

    I have this guitar in white , and I have the ‘59 Les Paul inspired by Gibson , both are amazing guitars , I’ve had the chance to buy a Gibson or buy these two guitars , I chose these over the Gibson. I’m very satisfied with my choice.
    But since they are made in China , If I want a Gibson , I’ll just buy a Chibson and put some better internals , still won’t be a true Gibson but I won’t be spending thousands on something I don’t play that much. I’m a drummer but I love guitars. I have them for the people I play with in case they don’t have a guitar or didn’t bring theirs with them. I have four Les Paul’s and one strat and my white SG. I’m not gonna pay for a name , and yeah they do hold value and some increase in value , but I’m okay with what I have , I don’t try to sell my stuff anyway.

      Epiphone has been making some really good guitars. The gap between Gibson and Epiphone has gotten much narrower in the past few years. And, with the Inspired By Gibson Custom guitars, that gap is downright tiny. I would, however, urge you to stay away from the Chibsons. There's no need for that.

      To the contrary. I have been a Gibson fan since I was a kid. They really are fantastic guitars. I honestly believe that Gibson doesn't deserve 90% of the bad rap it gets. Have there been QC issues? Sure, but, in reality, I've found just as many, if not more with Fenders.
      Somewhere along the line, it became fashionable to bash Gibson. Personally, I think it has something to do with the fact that Gibsons cost so much more. However, most folks don't take into account the set necks, binding, inlays, and a few other things, simply cost more to produce. But, I get it, if I'm paying that much, it should be perfect.
      The real issue here is the fact that import guitars have gotten so much better than they used to be, and they seem to be continually getting better. That's an awesome thing for all of us financially challenged folks and is certainly a reason to celebrate.

    This guitar is made in China by Gibson… there is no way Gibson are going to allow its Chinese facility to come anywhere near a Nashville made product. As good as it maybe (especially for the price!) It’s nowhere near a Nashville SG - It never will be. If you want the real deal, save your money. If not, then that’s cool, but in no way shape or form is it as good as a Gibson SG.

      Sorry, but I've played a crap ton of Gibson SGs in my day, and that's going back 40+ years. This Epi is just about as close as you can get.
      BTW, I'm guessing you've never even picked one of these up, sooo...

    • @TheVoosters
      @TheVoosters 8 месяцев назад

      @@grumpymikeguitar Ok where to start! - The body of the Epiphone isn’t the correct size or shape, the Gibson is thinner and more delicate in detail.
      Including the neck the Epiphone is made out of at least 6 pieces of ‘mahogany’ and 2 thin veneers from an unknown source and probably not ‘real’ mahogany. The Gibson is made from 3 pieces of sourced ‘real’ mahogany - very different tone woods.
      The metal items on the Epiphone are cheap ‘pot metal’ and are heavy. The Gibsons are light alloy which is far better for sustain. The Plastics are cheaper than the Gibsons as are all the screws. The frets are not the same on the Epi, much lower grade steel. Of course usually the pick ups are inferior, but obviously not on this particular one you have.
      The paint and the finishing are just not in the same league, Gibsons are not covered in a layer of plastic. Gibsons hold or increase in value, Epiphones don’t.
      I like you have been playing for over 40 years, and I own both Gibsons and Epiphones (I just bought an Epi TV Yellow special and it’s great!) In fact it’s the only Epiphone I’ve ever bought that has a neck that comes close to a Gibson. They are great for the money, but they are not Gibsons, really.. not even close.
      You asked ‘as good as a Gibson?’ The answer is no - no it’s not.

      @TheVoosters it would appear that you don't understand the difference between the standard Epiphones and the Inspired By Gibson Custom Epiphones. They are very different and the vast majority of what you have stated here has absolutely nothing to do with this guitar. I highly recommend you actually try one. Better yet, do a blindfolded test. • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar  6 месяцев назад

      If you ayed both guitars blindfolded and not allowed to feel up the headstock, I doubt seriously that you could tell which was which. Yes, you may think you could, but thinking something and actually being able to are two completely different things.
      And besides, I feel 100% confident that you've missed the entire point of the video. The actual point is that Epiphones are becoming guitars that should be taken seriously.
