    • @prosen8966
      @prosen8966 Год назад +3

      @@natyinthehouse I’ll do that but it would have to be extremely, unbelievably on your head “it’s all an act and somebody’s whispering in his ear” or my opinion is unlikely to change. I’ve seen him make up rap lines off the top of his head and he - like anybody else who can do that -- is simply brilliant. That’s a talent right there. Hamilton included not only the surface stuff that the audience saw (like myself) but if you watched videos on it, the music and the tempo, etc etc also was done in a certain style to speak to other composers and to ppl thru his musical talent. And the lyrics, of course, speak for themselves. And that’s not to mention his earlier Broadway show that also won a Tony. He’s not a one shot pony. He’s the real deal.

    • @prosen8966
      @prosen8966 Год назад

      @@natyinthehouse Well you got me. He shouldn’t sing Jesus Christ Superstar. But then again, I wouldn’t mind if NOBODY sang that musical (except for King Herod’s Song) and I’d easily give that up to never ever hear it again. It gave me nightmares as a child and being Jewish, it’s not even something I’d ever listen to except my family was into showtunes.
      But I’m pretty sure Lin is getting the last laugh - not Lindsay - since he likely will end up w a half a billion, maybe a actual billion dollars for his Hamilton musical and he can live with sounding bad online. I forgot to add that he was also pretty awesome when he guest starred on House (year 6) and when he sings in the right register, I love his voice. Admittedly, he doesn’t have the range of some of the men who were on that tape - they’re legends in their own right, at least for singing on Broadway - and somebody like Adam Lambert has a much stronger voice than Lin. But as far as I know, Adam hasn’t written scores for musicals and (possibly) doesn’t have the training to do so. Lin is well on his way to a long, happy & extreme loving career. (He can’t say enough about his wife.)
      Now maybe if it had been Les Mis, Cabaret, Chicago, Evita - one of my favs - I might have felt differently- altho, tbh, I don’t think so. I imagine I would have had the same response: he shouldn’t sing “x” - the difference would be that I would t want the musical to go away forever. JCS creeps me out to this day. And I can’t even enjoy the one song I thought was good bc Trump took it upon himself to say that HE was the king of the Jews and that just ruined it for me.
      Cabaret is different in that it makes me sad and weepy, and when the young Nazi boy sings Tomorrow I feel like crawling into a ball on my bed, but the music, the choreography, everything else about the musical I find excellent.
      And just by the by, I knew there was going to be trouble when I looked up the video and saw another one next to it named something like “Is Loki a complete narcissist… yadda yadda (bc I don’t recall the rest)” Loki - since Iron Man was killed off the show - is now my top Marvel character and I’m positive that I will not enjoy a video that is entitled that way. Clearly, even if he is not found to be a complete narcissist, there will be plenty said re his character that is remarkably bad and while he played a villain or perhaps an antihero on the show, he wasn’t disliked by almost anyone with whom I spoke on forum boards, etc (I’m not just going by ppl I know bc most ppl I know don’t follow. MArvel). He is sort of like the Moriarty of the Marvel world, except that he wasn’t quite as bad as Moriarty (in the sense of being a comic book character v just a really really bad guy whom I inexplicably liked. Moriarty I mean.) I probably read too much fan fiction bc he wasn’t a large part of the actual works.

    • @natyinthehouse
      @natyinthehouse Год назад

      @@prosen8966 just to be perfectly clear, I adore Hamilton and I adore Lin Manuel Miranda. My two favorites from that musical are Dear Theodosia and Farmer Refuted. Tik Tik Boom was a perfect movie musical because it payed homage to a Broadway legend gone before his time and another legend that inspired him who died around the time the movie came out. Lin himself says that he is not that good at dancing. He something along the lines of, “that’s why everyone else is dancing around me while I stand in place or walk around.” He can sing and when he sings something in his proper range and style, it sounds great, but you can’t compare his voice to Leslie Odom Jr.’s.
      I’m sorry, but you cannot call him a triple threat. That would mean I could call myself a triple threat. I have a music degree that I got by singing and I did musical theatre my whole life so I can act and dance. You can’t say that I’m a triple threat and Ariana DeBose is a triple threat. A triple threat is some who is a master of all three categories. Lin is not a master dancer or a master singer. If you wanted to put rapping under singing for modern context then he is a master of two.
      The people who put this list together were careful to stay away from Broadway performers, with the exception of Hugh Jackman and Barbra Streisand, or they’d make up the whole list.

    • @prosen8966
      @prosen8966 Год назад

      @@natyinthehouse To be fair, many of the so-called triple threats were amazing in one or two categories, and just fair in the third. And that’s ignoring all of the earlier Hollywood legends not named in this particular list. In a separate comment, i mentioned that, for example, missing both Sammy Davis Jr and Gregory Hines seemed to be a bit much. You can’t say that either of those men were not decent singers, wondiferous dancers, and fantastic actors. (Or, of course you could, but it would be a minority view.) But they, like Liza and Judy and Dick van Dyke and so many others simply weren’t put on this particular list.
      I mean, truly, are we saying that Meryl Streep’s singing or dancing is at the “threat” level of her acting? Seriously? Julie Andrews, Fred Astaire, even a Kevin Bacon or Julia Stiles can claim that title. No. Perhaps Lin wasn’t at Odom’s level as a singer. But I still believe that Daveed Diggs was a better actor than Odom; he simply played two separate parts and thus didn’t end up w top billing as both Burr and narrator at certain moments. If you honestly believe that every person on the list was in fact a triple threat, according to YOUR definition, a master in all three categories, then I guess there is not much more to say, as you have made up your mind. But I believe quite a few of the ppl on that list were, in fact NOT. Asters of one or two of the skills involved. That is to say, they are talented in those roles, they can sing and dance and act, but if you compare them to truly great singers, they are simply not at that level. Wewwww
      And please be fair to how I responded. I mentioned not only that Lin shouldn’t sing JCS but that there were numerous singers on the video much more talented than Lin, with much stronger voices, who clearly blew him away. All I truly said was that he COULD sing in his own range (certainly songs he specifically wrote for himself), and I implied - thru saying he was indeed a triple threat - that his dancing was up to par and that his acting was definitely at a high enough level. I truly believe that. And I wouldn’t be as harsh on Lins dancing as Lin himself. But he’s no Fred Astaire. I simply said, the same way other ppl appeared to be saying this, that Lin could act, sing and dance at a good enough level to be considered a triple threat. And actually, I was throwing in his composing in there, so something - either his singing or dancing didn’t have to be top notch.
      And that’s not just saying anybody in a musical is worthy of being called a triple threat. I saw Grease 2, for ex. I would t put anybody from that movie onto the list, altho it happens to be true that Michelle Pfeiffer is a fab actress with a wonderful voice. I just wouldn’t say she’s a great dancer. But, as mentioned on the list NPH is indeed a master in all three categories. Without a doubt. His talent is astonishing.
      I wasn’t pushing Lin bc I have any particular interest in him (other than truly thinking he’s a genius composer). But I’m also not put off by ppl disagreeing w what I say or believe. That’s why this is a commentary; a forum discussion; rather than simply a gushing discussion of X, y or z. We actually seem to agree mostly, but even if we didn’t, we could simply agree to disagree, in a much nicer manner than Congress. I’m not going to flip out bc other ppl disagree w me. I have three sisters who do so on a regular basis. 🥰

      Some definite areas of agreement in your list up there, but some others I would not have included.
      Much as I love her acting & all that, in my personal opinion Marilyn Monroe never quite rose to the level of others in her generation as a dancer or singer. Don't know that I've seen that much from Queen Latifah when it comes to dance (but I fully admit that I may have missed something along the way).
      Similar celebrity talents that do not QUITE make the triple-threat for me: Ethel Merman (hits the mark singing & acting, not-so-much as a dancer), Dinah Shore (love her voice, personality as a talk show host, but the only dancing with her I can remember was fairly pedestrian and her acting always just seemed to be her, not the character [unless the character was that similar to her own "self"]), Carol Burnette (acting? OH MY! singing? well, for certain songs O.K. ... Dancing? Maybe, but never what got her the attention of the other two talent arenas), ETC.

Too many people today, especially veterans within the industry, write her off as a talented singer who got lucky in the film industry, but her talent is unmatched. I love Ginger Rogers being recognized, but personally I would have put her above Fred. After all, as they say, she did everything that Fred did, but backwards and in heels!

Which means that our terms for generations are going as backwards as apparently our scholastic achievements in the States. (What is that, gen V?) But my longwinded point was whoever did the list was quite young and not familiar w older films, stages performers or really the 20th century (as a general rule). My parents raised me on Broadway shows and old old films (+ classical music) but I’m pretty sure I’m older than most ppl answering on this list. Chicago filmed from December 2001-May of 2002 and her second child was born in April of 2003. If she WAS pregnant, she would either have lost the baby or had a 14 month pregnancy. I dont mind some of the people on this list but it seemed to me that they only chose more recent actors/singers/dancers. The only reason I can think of is because back in the day, actors had to be dancers and singers while also being an actor, it was expected. Which is why in a certain time period of Hollywood, musicals were huge. I mean all the Golden Girls could do all three.

  • @marcblais

    Even though I love and respect everyone on that list, I’d argue that many performers on there really aren’t triple threats. A triple threat really is defined by someone who’s a 10/10 in acting, singing and dancing and many great actors on your list, although good or fine singers, haven’t proven to be 10/10 in the dance department. A single performance in a one off musical movie doesn’t automatically make you a triple threat either…

    You left out the biggest of all-Judy Garland, arguably the best singer of the 20th Century, who recently had her 100th birthday celebrated all over the country! More than 50 years after her death. She was equally talented as an actress with an Oscar for The Wizard of Oz and two other nominations, and as a dancer, dancing with Fred Astaire, who came out of retirement to dance with her in Easter Parade, one of the biggest money makers Hollywood ever produced. She also starred in two movies with Gene Kelly. Her movie, Meet Me in St Louis, was MGM’s biggest money maker for 20 YEARS. In the movie she sang, danced, and acted; and starred in the Movie, appearing in almost every scene. Known during her lifetime as Miss Entertainment, she sold out every concert she ever gave. Her first concert was at the Palace Theatre in New York where she was scheduled for 4 weeks, ended up extending it to 19 weeks.

    I recognize that this is YOUR list, your choices. However, IMPO, Bebe Neuwirth was a better Velma than Catherine Zeta-Jones (I saw her on Broadway) and definitely a triple threat, altho not on your list. In fact, I was surprised by the non-presence of a number of actor/ singer/ dancers: Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines leading the list. My last mention is probably minuscule in comparison, but I would have mentioned J-Lo’s movie Out of Sight with George Clooney. It had sexual tension, action, adventure, and amazing music.
    Also, this is again a personal preference: I don’t and have never felt Gene Kelly was even close to as great a dancer as Fred Astaire. One of Astaire’s problems was simply his age - he was born so early that by the time tv and film began, he was already in his thirties. But maybe it’s his body shape; maybe it’s his personality; the only film I ever really liked w Gene Kelly was Singin’ in the Rain whereas it would be difficult for you to find a film w Fred Astaire that I disliked. But at all.
    Lastly, if you were going to include some younger individuals, I would have found it difficult (and I’m sure YOU found it so) to choose between the numerous talented up and comers. Hugh Jackman and NPH are pretty obvious choices. But Andrew Garfield simply brings to mind the two other Spider-Men: Toby McGuire and Tom Holland. The others are also a-mazing dancers and (appear) to be quite excellent singers. Ben Platt, by the by, appears to be AT LEAST a triple threat.
    But again, it’s your list. 🥰🥰🥰
