  • FwooshTube is becoming a regular Star Wars review channel huh? Tonight I look at the 1:12 scale Boba Fett model kit from Bandai. Another great kit but not as finished as the rest. This one definitely needs paint.

    Really nice review. Plane speaking, articulate and to the point. I've been designing and sculpting toys for over twenty years (I've sculpted Boba and Jango Fett more times than almost any other licensed character). Just thought I'd answer the couple of production queries you had. Both the holster and arm 'cup' are moulded as single pieces for function. If they made those components in two parts they would be prone to splitting, not so much an issue for the holster but no good for the arm which would have been loose and wouldn't have held it's pose as well.
    The little lumps of flash on the braids are to assist the plastic's flow through the mould. The biggest problem with moulding very fine components is the risk that the molten plastic will cool before its made its way all the way through the mould. In order to flow freely the plastic is allowed to 'escape' at key points accross the mould. Usually these points are located on the sprues themselves but on very thin components that are long (or looped) there is often a need to add these details to the component its self. They are sometimes know as risers or breathers as they stop air being trapped in the plastic.

    Just use a silver sharpie if you don't want to paint. That's what I did and it looks awesome.

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад +9

      +EL I may just do that. I've been meaning to get some Gundam markers to spruce some of the kits up. Be easier than breaking out the paints, which I don't seem to have time for these days.

    I've been thinking about getting one of these to do a kenner tribute fett, and since I have zero faith in my painting skills a low cost model kit where every part I'd want to paint is its own piece, well that just sounds like a dream. I might have to buy one of these guys at some point.

    The tiny pieces on the braid are part of the moulding process. There are small channels in the mould that the liquid plastic flows down. Without them you would have air bubbles in the mould and wouldnt be able to get a full part.
    With a complex shape like the braid, there are more of these parts to draw the plastic around.

    I just finished this kit. All I did was some detail painting on the wrist gauntlets, belt, and jetpack, add silver chipping/wear/drybrush around the whole figure's "armor and equipment" add panel lining and did a dark wash over the clothing areas, and hit him with some testors dull coat lacquer. It literally looks like it jumped off the screen. Absolutely fantastic kit. I highly recommend it.

    It's awesome how they got the right hip pouch accurate on this; same with the Mafex one. Very rare do they get it right. It's just so odd Hot Toys didn't..yet they're the only company I know of that reproduced the actual film used sidearm correctly. The one we see on all ESB Fett's remains a mystery to where it came from.

      Boba Fett had red gauntlets in Return of the Jedi, this model is based on The Empire Strikes Back where he had green gauntlets and a more subdued overall color scheme. There are other differences like the belt, the jetpack colors, and pant cuffs, among others.

BTW, I don't know if you noticed this, but the rocket is the same as the Black Series one, just in yours it's assembled differently ^^. Looks like they incorporated a lot of new kit technology from the Gundam models. Bandai started doing one piece for the major joints for strength. The older gundam kits had two piece assembly for a long time. As a result the actual peg that goes into peg hole would snap easily. The new pegs are much stronger being one piece. Highly recommend you try a new Gundam HG kit from Iron Blood orphans, those 1/144 kits have a skeleton system with insane articulation. Very fun to build and play with!!

    Just bought this and Mafex Darth Vader. Still want to get S.H Luke, but the price tag! Just saw images of Mafex Boba Fett coming out in July 2016 and it looks awesome! I guess I don't have to paint this one, and will just keep him with the clean look. That why I can have both a clean look and then the Mafex Boba Fett to complete the look.

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      +BerserkBat I did the same with the droids, keeping the models clean and then getting the MAFEX ones (or the Figuarts, if they ever solicit those) for my dirty pair. I ended up weathering the Fett model, and bought a second to try for a better look, even though I already have the MAFEX Fett on pre-order. It's a sickness.
      And no kidding about the Luke prices. With as popular as that one has become, I'm hoping they do a re-release for everyone who missed him the first time around.

    Great review dude, if you have time and for a better results, I think this model kit has to be paint as a regular unpainted model kit like the 1/72 Slave 1 from Finemolds. What I shall paint is the light gray parts clothes with flat base + the right color. The shiny plastic for the pants, cape and shirt is completely wrong and does not feel like the fabric textures. I shall also aibrush all the armor with a primary silver and then repaint all color bases. The silver effects will be obtained by removing color bases (scratching, micromasking,...) so that negative way will results a more realistic model than simply add silver touches. Up tonyou amigos.... Warnacht...

      Use old electric guitar strings for bits like that, they look good when dry brushed. Wrap them around a thin tube to get accurate bends in them, they will hold shape if you bend them tightly enough Don't forget to boil them first, get all that grime out of them.

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      +Scott Rogers Ooo, that's a tough one. I like both, but if I had to choose it would the Stormtrooper. It's so much better than other Stormtroopers. The Boba Fett is awesome and the best so far, but I'm waiting to see if the MAFEX beats it.

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      You can use any kind of paint really. I've done a lot of customs so I have mostly acrylics, they work fine. And you can apply with either a paintbrush or an airbrush.

    Great video - nice model
    Here's what people (Collectors) have to realize, this is a scale plastic model, not a fully assembled "Action Figure", you should expect to do some painting, after all that's why it's called modeling.
    Due to the increase in moulding technology - slide moulds, multiple colors on one sprue, and most recently articulated joints moulded as one piece - these models excel at detail.
    It's not a Monogram Skill Level 1 Snap-together kit. These are very nice model kits for people that build models and want better detail - Action Figures are becoming expensive adult toys.

    so another question, how durable are these could you make a video of you shaking them?? I ask b.c I have 3 kids, one being almost 4 and no matter where I put my figures he somehow gets them, and I just wanna know if they could handle being shaken and played with

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      +Me too (Jigzsaw) I probably wouldn't trust these to not fall apart in the hands of small children. They are durable but aren't going to hold up to rigorous play.

    I've gotten used to doing the stickers the same way. I find it much easier to when I get to a part that has stickers on it, to go ahead and do the stickers for that piece, rather it is a helmet piece, torso, etc.
    I am considering picking this up now. Do you have an image of the finished version with paint?

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      I haven't finished it completely, but here's a shot with a quick pass of a silver Gundam marker. thefwoosh.com/forum/download/file.php?id=2389 I stopped because I actually got a second kit to do after I got into the waterslides, and then Medicom showed their awesome MAFEX Fetts. So now I'm in wait and see mode.

      Insomniac Vapers I'm not quite sure, I've never used those. But the Gundam marker is essentially paint with a pen tip applicator. It doesn't soak in like most permanent markers, it actually dries on the surface. I love it.

    Hi there. First off, thank you for the video! I just ordered this because of your video and I have NEVER done any kind of model kits before. Can you (or anyone else) provide me with a list of tools I'd need to complete this?

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  6 лет назад

      The biggest thing to get is a good pair of side cutters, or nippers. They are made to snip the parts out of the sprues. I didn't know anything about models before this line either and my first couple aren't as great as they could have been because I was just twisting the parts out or using fingernail clippers. I've spent big money on some expensive pairs but always fall back on this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BMYWXI/ Plus it comes with tweezers for decals and a blade for trimming. Other than that you only really need time.

    to me is incredible that it took so many years and a japanese company to get real Star Wars model kits. Is unthinkable. Do you have any tips for putting on the stickers? I have done one of the Gundam figures by ban dai and wanted to do the star wars but i dont' want the stickers looking terrible like they turned out previously

    • @TheFwoosh
      @TheFwoosh  8 лет назад

      For the stickers there aren't really a lot of tips other than to triple check them before actually pushing them down. I usually just stick down a corner and then kind of work it around to make sure it's in place. I've been using the waterslides a lot lately, especially for places where the decal goes on a flat spot or over sculpted details like the Stormtrooper tube stripes and helmet details. For that I searched youtube for waterslide tutorials. A little tricky but they end up looking waaaay better.
