Thanks for the nostalgia trip through Oregon. Way back when I was a wee lad (think early 1950’s), my family and I made a trip from Yreka, CA to Myrtle Creek, OR (south of Roseburg). In those days, it was on US 99, basically a two lane road. The climb over Mt. Ashland was especially exciting.

Greetings once again from Ohio ... Thank you for these pre-release! ... It's nice to be going back and running team ... (In the olden days, called running 2-man) .... lol ... A bit if nostalgia time! Thinking back, I can't recall ever being up the Oregon stretch of I-5, other than with you ... I was in Portland. I recall being there approx 2 wks prior to Mt. St. Helens ... I met a dear trucker friend while on that run (named Art), with whom I was in contact for many years.
I won't bore you all with more details, but do want to say thank you for the video. I've watched most of what you have posted in the past, and look forward to the up-dates. Stay safe and well, and may you be Blessed through your new position in Fla.

Love seeing the remastered videos from the "Old Red" days! I ran this route from LA to Seattle for 6 months before going 48 states. As for the use of the breakdown lane for travelling up the passes, I'd have to disagree with what you said in the video. I know some drivers use it as a courtesy to other drivers, and the cops let them get away with it, but in reality they are really putting themselves in a dangerous situation. If they come up on a disabled vehicle or the road narrows due to a bridge, then that lane suddenly disappears and they need to take evasive measures. I was taught to maintain my speed in the legal travel lane and let the traffic work around me.
Hope to see more of what you're doing now Jack! Hope all is well in Life After Truckin'!!

    Very informative & entertaining.
    Beautiful scenery.
Highway 1-5 looks better in Oregon than the 1-5 in Washington St ( at least north of Seattle )
    Elvis sang in Portland.
Seen home movie with Elvis at the wheel of his bus along with his TCB mafia & he passes a commercial truck.
Can you imagine the semi truck driver looking to his left as that bus goes by.
Was that Elvis at the wheel ?
Elvis sang a song " that long loney highway"
He also sang " long legged girl with the short dress on"
Plus he sang "Oh happy day that The Lord washed my sins away"
Wonder what song Indiana Jack would listen to 1st 2nd & 3rd.
Rumor has it that U Haul follows your truck wherever you go.
Could it be when ya park ...ya go into the back of that truck...reno into bedrm King sized bed satillite tv ...the works...
Ya those hills can be tricky with slower trucks ahead & traffic in the left lane.....
Gotta get the new & improved grasshopper truck...slow truck ahead...traffic in left lane so ya cannot get into passing lane....no problem. Push the activate grasshopper button located far right on dashboard.
Once pushed your entire rig tractor & trailer will hop ahead & over the slower vehicle & land perfectly smoothly on road. Caution activate only on straight highway.
Not if highway curves or if there's a tunnel.
Funny there is no mention about checking if there's a slower vehicle ahead of the slower vehicle you want to hop over ???
I can see headliners in National Enquirer ..Jack and Jill were in a 1970 VW bug & somewhere along highway I-5 they disappeared without trace??? Police are baffled.
One Andy of Mayberry program had deputy Barney Five ( Don Knotts) get an old WW 1 motorcycle with sidecar.
He then started pulling over the semi trucks for going 5 mph over the posted limit as drivers wanted to get a run up the steep grade ahead.
Barney said that if he did not enforce the speed limit well next week the truckers would be going 10 mph over the posted speed limit...then in two wks 15 mph over ...so on.
So truckers scared of Barney gear down & their engines make loud noise & houses along the highway have owners that cannot get a proper sleep!!!
You never did tell us what ya did with that tasty pie ???? ( eyes up )
You sure had fun in your trucking job...or you made it fun.
Good attitude is good for heart /blood pressure.

    • @AlA-ok5jh

      Lonely highway......not loney highway.
( there must be a highway called loney highway somewhere in the world or universe....hee hee...guess that's why I accidently wrote loney highway.

Jack I've been watching your videos quite awhile, perhaps a few years, and have great respect for what you did then and now. A suggestion: perhaps previous to a video of this nature you might tell us roughly the year you made it if you know, and briefly what it is about, the truck you are driving, etc. I kind of understood when you first started going back in time because I recognize Old Red & you looked different too, but new comers may be confused. They may not know you are now doing a different job in trucking just as vital in my opinion. Perhaps some back story or prelude when you show these previous recorded videos would be a great idea. Regardless thumbs up on this video.... BTW, regardless what I'm driving, I do my best to give trucks the right of way, knowing what they go thru from watching your videos.

It was very common in my earlier day's of driving a truck, that drivers would move over on to the shoulder, to let you pass, even a lot of 4 wheelers would move over for you, these days drivers don't have any respect for anyone, it's all about themselves

Rather than add a truck lane, Oregon allows trucks to use the shoulder through the passes. In this case the new construction took out the shoulder.

Blackberry Trail. Or, How to be a 300lb trucker...... btdt lol @7:35 I drove for Knight for awhile we were instructed to NEVER drive on the shoulder EVER because of the possibility of rain subsidence causing the pavement to fail and the obvious hilarity that follows. Schneider and JB Hunt had similar directives. California has the WORST record for repairing washed out shoulders. Oregon is better. Washington (WDOT) seems to vary by section. I don't know how many trips I've made on I-5 in 8 years of LTL. I have seen more than a few heavy trucks run afoul of shoulder fail. That Pilot at Rice Hill is or was one of the best on I-5. I'm with you on the T/A dislike. Unless you enjoy the squirts? NEVER TA! I retired in 2007 after my third heart attack in 3 months. 16 years total OTR Half LTL, 4 years driving Logs and Chips, 4 years dedicated flatbed. I liked Logs and Chips. I was home every night. Do I miss it? The drives through spectacular scenery most definitely! The really excellent people you meet along the way? Absolutely! The idiot drivers, meathead driver managers, bored DOT/State Cops? Not even a little bit. I even had the luck to render aid to a State Cop that was having a heart attack while doing an inspection on my truck somewhere in Missouri. The stories I tell people don't start with "Now this is no BS". Yet they still don't believe them. Unless they're Truckers. Truckers go "Hell son, That was Monday!" Love your channel. Thanks and keep it out of the ditch!
