Herbert almost had his leg amputated after that crash in Brands Hatch. He was never able to walk properly afterwards, but still scored 3 F1 wins and enjoyed a long career, which is amazing perseverance.
One of the other cars in that crash, near the bottom left of the shot, was an asbolute mess too, and it's lucky the driver didn't smash his head on the barriers too.
No one could believe it, especially fellow drivers. Hit the barrier going 300 kph with a 75g max impact, only had a light concussion alongside a sprained ankle.
How? By this point the carbon monocoque had been around for 26 years, crash testing was heavily regulated, HANS was present, etc. since 2003 F1 cars have been amazingly safe
@Lidl on Quality Jeddah is still a little too dangerous for my liking, tbh. Blind corners with little to no runoff, straight into concrete? that's just a freak accident waiting to happen, even if the modern cars are incredibly safe

Johnny Herbert's at Brands Hatch 1988 in last part really scary, it totally shattered his legs when it hits the barrier after the concrete wall. But still recovered very good, soon made his Grand Prix debut in Brazilian Grand Prix 1989.
Concrete walls have their uses - they are important when you DON’T want the car to stop suddenly. Tyre walls and TecPro have had cars bury themselves into them.
Concrete barriers literally have no spring to ensure a relief in the G forces. I'd much rather slam into a bunch of tires than into a concrete barrier.
in panis’s case a concrete wall would have been better because he would have glanced off it but it was a row of tires so it grabbed his car and snapped it in two along with his legs
@@CHERN0BYLCH1LD In Panis’s case, had the tyre wall been belted together (as they did post-Burti), then the car wouldn’t have stopped so suddenly and would have been buried deeper into the wall, which would have kept his legs intact.
Not exactly. Senna died because he was impaled in the head by a suspension arm. Obviously the concrete barrier was essential for that arm to hit him, but if it weren't for that, he would have walked out of the car.
It will definitely be modified, they can lower and/or remove the kerbs (the cause of both Crash) in some corners and put in more safer barriers (they already there in some corners), you have to wait for the new track they are building and if they don't go racing there F1 would have to pay fines for not respecting the contract.
Only thing is the f1 rear suspension compressing (is that the word?) instead of exploding like f1. Least they can do is add some tecpro or something, at least some kind of dampening for a wall you're going at with like a 45deg or less
Damn, so many heavy crashes, i´m glad that all the drivers getting out of this alive! Herberts crash was shocking, also Kubica´s crash, i remember, seeing this crash at the tv, that was like my heart stop beating for a moment.
Pre-halo there was actually still a safety concept which was regulating the shape of the cars called the triangle, where the tip of the top air intake was raised
This is why anyone that has been watching F1 for only like a year should not be allowed to even comment, because of stupid statements like this. Pre halo cars were still ultra safe, basically since 2003 and HANS in F1s case, F1 has been very safe. It's an insult to say they weren't safe, engineers worked very hard to produce those cars.
Watched all the clips until Herbert's came on. Turned it off as soon as I saw the info, I've seen it b4, far too gruesome 🤮leg just dangling, attached by a thread. Glad he recovered and went on to f1
It's actually become surprisingly safe. I'd argue an FI crash under certain circumstances is safer than a regular street accident, specially something like a t-bone. Going out in the track is still putting your life on the line, ofc, because safety features can't look into the future and there can be freak accidents, like Grosjean's at Bahrain, but still. Safety hs come a long way and now horrific crashes that would have resulted in certain death are surviveable and even something you can walk away from on your own volition. Those concrete barriers at Abu Dhabi are a freak accident or worse, a death just waiting to happen, though. Produces great racing, apparently, but it's a hazard.
