Absolutely insane that you imply young children might not be old enough to use the bar while riding alone. Young children are the ones who need to use the bar the MOST!
What do you mean the bar should only be used when it can be done safely? the bar should always be used - if you or some one else in the chair is not capble of operating the bar then you should not be on the chair. This is doubly important when children are on the chair. I have skied alot in North America and I know there is is sometimes a 'macho' thing about not putting the bar down - but it is simple newtonian physics - if the chair stops suddenly YOU will keep moving and there is a high probability you will come off the chair. In Europe if I don't put the bar down it is pretty certain either the lift operator or your chair companions will shout at you. In fact more than a few European resorts, especially on the beginner or child friendly slopes, have lifts with automatic bars.
Some newer chairlifts will immediately stop if the bar is not closed, it can detect such things itself in the station... It is an interesting system :D. You are soooo right! What irritates me is that there are no resting bars for the ski... Is this usual? Or only with older lifts/short/cheap ones? Because I have not seen such thing yet^^
@@Varadero124 there a few lifts with fully automatic closing & opening bars ... ... the Hachau Bahn in Wagrain in Austria comes to mind. ruclips.net/video/KacziU-Er-Y/видео.html The lift does not have any foot rest but is pretty short - it is designed so that kids can use it with minimal supervision with no risk of falling off - essentially the lift services one of the beginner slopes. There are quite a few other new lifts around the area - many with variations on the same safety mechanisms - though those with footrests pretty much require the skier/boarder to at least partly manage the bar closure.

If I recall there are three Chairlift with automatically closing bars (Alp Dado - Crest La Siala, Treis Palas - Masegn and Lavadinas- Fuorcla Sura). But I really never saw a chairlift in real without footrests. Interesting to see that^^

about an hour after the first chair went up on the hotwheels lift, a ski fell off of a skiier and nailed me in the head. Helmets are great!

@@Varadero124 We still have many older chair lifts without footrests in Australia.
At my local ski area, one of the lifts still doesn't have a bar. But, they are replacing it soon.
