Worth noting that the original discovery of Vitamin D was associated with a particular disease, a long time ago, and the historic recommended minimum to deal with the childhood problems being studied at the time is almost certainly inadequate. They did not understand the complete functionality of it then. It varies quite a lot in different parts of the world too.

The calcium is going in al the wrong places and they don;t know why i think when doctors prescribe vitamin D they should also prescribe magnesium and the good form of it not oxide
I'd like to see Dr. Patrick read the book "Whole" by T. Colin Campbell, and then talk about whether most people should consider taking a D supplement or not. I've read that almost everyone, including Floridians who get hours of sun per day, still show as "deficient" on tests. And so what is considered "deficient" may not be accurate at all. Campbell's book talks about the dangers of taking isolated vitamins that will throw the body's innumerable biological reactions out of whack and cause problems, not solutions. You could probably make a case for every vitamin and show that most people are deficient in almost all of them. So should we start taking handfuls of vitamin tablets every day? Of course not.
They all seem to ignore his extensive studies. There is so much good data showing vitamin D supplements make no difference. It is a hormone and our body makes I through exposure to sunlight.

It's always around 25-30. I did have a few doctors tell me that Vit D is not as big a deal as we once thought. I don't agree, I believe It is very important as she says here.
I'm in the same boat, I think. I take a lot (of D) and still get sick at times and can't get better until I raise it through the roof. So I do, and I get well and have no side effects.

Yes D3 is also for the immune system. The 25hydroxy of 30ng/ml was established over 40 years ago. Research shows of people outdoor dwellers have over 60nm/ml. That is the minimum to shoot for. It takes up to 3 months for D to ramp up. An adult can take 4000iu D3 daily safely. Get a 25hydroxy after 2 or 3 months. I live in Florida but i have to take 10,000iu D3 daily to achieve 83bg/ml.
I'm confused. If 1,000 UI of Vitamin D raises serum levels by ~5 ng/ml, and to have an adequate blood serum levels, you need to be >= 30-60 ng/ml. That would translate to 6,000 - 12,000 UI. However, the at the very beginning of this video, the bottom left of her presentation slide says a tolerable upper intake of 4,000 UI/day. Seems like a contradiction. @@HolisticPython yes it can be confusing. 4000iu is safe for adults and much higher can be tolerated. The only person that developed hyper calcemia was a person taking 40,000iu per day and a calcium supplement and was reversed. I started at 4000iu per day and had a 25hydroxy but achieved 50 ng/ml. The upper tolerable limit is the official recommendation. There are upper tolerable limits recommended for each of the vitamins in non-prescription supplements - these are amounts known to be safe in all people - but given many variables, this level may not be effective for establishing optimal blood levels in some ppl. So, if someone is unable to do regular testing, it will be safe to take this amount on a regular basis, but w/testing may establish that may need to take more to reach optimal level. Dr. Patrick is not physician, so I'm sure she must not make recommendations for supplementation beyond the official, even though she knows that some ppl will nerd to take beyond this UTL to reach sufficient level, much less optimal. I have heard a vitamin D researcher and physician say ( in a recorded grand rounds presentation to other physicians) that he uses an eight-week protocol of 50,000 IU once per week. I have a photosensitive autoimmune disease and I am elderly and obese, so I knew I was likely deficient even though taking a senior multivitamin and consuming some dietary sources of vitamin D. Therefore, a couple of months b4 my scheduled annual Medicare visit, I started taking 8,000 IU of D3 daily, 6 days/week, in an approximation of the 50,000 IU/week regimen I had heard from the vit D researcher. At my request, my GP ordered vit D blood level test & it was 50, in the middle of the optimal 40-60. And mentally I felt amazing. But will need further experimentation and testing to know how much I need to take on a regular basis to maintain that optimal level. I dropped back to the upper tolerable limit recommendation of 4k IU daily, and, a year later, I feel less well, but will need more testing to determine whether vit D levels have slipped or if something else awry.
Since January 2023 I have been taking higher doses of vitamin d. Anywhere from 30 to 40 thousand IU's daily. The reason for this is because I have lupus and vitiligo. My question is, will taking vitamin d from an external source stop or slowdown my body regular vitamin d production.
Dr. Taylor 🥰 here. If your vitamin D blood test reads low. It is much more likely that you are low in zinc and/or magnesium. If your doctor will run your active vitamin D, calcitriol blood test, it will likely not be low.
So the calcium in my blood was high for some reason on my last blood test. I had started taking calcium citrate for osteopenia, but I stopped because of palpitations. I read not to take vitamin d if your calcium is high. Any insight please?
I've seen this case multiple times. These could be the reasons : 1. Don't take vit D2 (studies have attributed D2 to higher blood calcium levels) , but take Vit D3 and if possible with vit K2. 2. The issue here is calcification of arteries if there's too much calcium in the blood. However, it's not possible to have too much calcium if you're drinking enough fluids (not water, hydration fluids i.e. water and electrolytes) throughout the day. 3.Low protein intake. Calcium is used up in digesting protein since protein digestion requires an acidic stomach, which the calcium provides. Up your protein. 4. Genetic condition or certain food allergies. Vit D is important since literally every type of cell in our body has a receptor for it! Do not skip out on vit D3, Omega 3 from cod liver oil and K2. Hope this helps.
Additionally, K2 to help the D3 go into the bones, rather than the arteries, and Magnesium to make most effective use overall of the Vitamin D, however you are getting it. I am not a doctor, but from what I understand, many people who take Calcium supplements, probably wouldn’t need as much (if any) if they got enough K2. On a Balanced diet, Calcium is in many foods, it just won’t be used for bone health as much as it could without K.
Question for Rhonda. Does two 20 minute sauna sessions in one day create the same benefit as one 20 minute session for one day and another 20 minute session the next day?
Most people would. But a lot of people just don't absorb/ retain Vit D from diet, sun exposure and even supplementing. I take 4,000iu a day (for years), am outside very often, eat a fully balanced diet and my levels don't go higher than 31-39 🤷🏽♀️

It's like refusing to take off old clothes and put on new and fresh clothes instead. We're not supposed to live long. Long life is a negative side effect of a modern sanitized lifestyle
Every thing not absorbed is passed through Kidneys. That is a huge amount. You need to see a very high professional. So what you do is get a Kidney function test. And if the excretion is above 500 mg /litre . Your in a bit of trouble. I would be checking what you are taking and if the kidneys store it. If in doubt take the 5k then get a reading of Vitamin D in Urine. It's your life !
Hi Rhonda, I know that I need to take magnesium along with my vitamin D3. However, I have COPD and magnesium causes me to have labored breathing at the least bit of exertion. Can you explain why? Can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Thanks for your informative video!
Mg relaxes muscles. Your lung accessory muscles may become too relaxed and inhibit proper lung inflation. Do you O2 sats go down, too? Wondering if conscientious slow deep breathing with activity would be doable for you while on Mg. Can you divide your Mg dose so it doesn’t affect your breathing?
Sun is the best source. Ran into issues with supplements even at low doses and was taking mag and K2 along with it too. Get everything from food and nature.

@@HolisticPython All these are guides, but definitely you can take a LOT more than 4000IU. A good sunshine day gives you 25,000. See David Grimes work is my recommendation. What we know from labs is that mouse need 1IU per 10gm. Hence 1,000IU per 10kg is a very rough guide. You need blood tests of course. But nothing will go wrong by taking 4,000- 10,000 per day for 6 mths. See what bloods say at end of that.
@@HolisticPython also that 1,000IU equates to 5nmol is also a rough guide. But nonetheless almost nobody can be hurt by an extra 25nmol or 40nmol, hence another reason to try 5,000 to 10,000. People have literally taken 500,000iu per day harmlessly but you do need to have K2 and magnesium as well at right levels. Almost everyone should supplement Mg. For K2, simply buy your D3 premixed with K2 (mk 7).
Vitamin D3 is the best absorbed by your body, its what the body makes from sunlight. If you start to take it you should also take K2 and magnesium (im not sure which one is best but it looks like magnesium glycinate helps with depression, anxiety and high blood pressure) to help with the vitamin d absorption. Also take it with something fatty, it could be a meal, or a glass of milk.
It would be amazing if your first recommendation was to go outside and get some UVB on the skin with no sunscreen or sunglasses. Then you would sulfate your cholesterol into the perfect form of vitamin D and you would get thousands of other quantum biological benefits, completely separate from vitamin D, like POMC like photons of light, moving unobstructed directly to the pituitary. I wonder if that would help hormone regulation.? Not trying to nitpick, but you will be way more credible if you give people the best solution first, and then move onto supplementation if needed
Some say take your k2 like once a week or so. Others say magnesium is more important. I take k2 daily, once in a while. Then when I run out I give it a break. I get my mag daily through the skin. Always.

Just checked my D3 supplement bottle and it says that each pill has 4,000 iu (100mcg) and my cod liver oil capsules has 5 (it's either ug or yg, can't quite decipher it.) Is that enough for a man in his 60's? 🤔
Yes too low... take 5000-6000iu, most D experts take 6000iu per day, year round whatever season take is combined with good magnesium supplement.. and K2. make your own choice.. 4000iu is minimum 6000 is perfect.
I love Rhonda, but why do we have to sort through 100 podcasts to determine the optimal daily protocol for vitamins? Can one of them just write it out and share it, please. 😂
I find rather interesting that the Women Health Initiatives didn't find marked benefits to Vitamin D supplementation, despite being a decade long study with the statistical power to boot.
I am a bit disappointed that there is so much focus on supplementation with pills. The first thing people should do is try to get a little bit of sunshine every day if this is available. Here in the tropics, I do that every morning as this helps me with my circadian rhythm as well, but further from the equator, you will need to do it around noon. Next you should make sure you eat a healthy diet with plenty of fatty meat and fish, occasionally also liver. If that is not enough, you could try to supplement - by using a UVB light. Supplementation with pills is a last resort measure.

one thing the health care system fails to tell patients is that the same sun-protective qualities of melanin that make darker skinned people less susceptible (but not immune!) to skin cancer from UV radiation also means their melanocytes produce less vitamin D, and especially at higher latitudes or cooler seasons there is no way for anyone with medium to dark skin to get enough vitamin D without either a high dietary intake (e.g. from fatty fish) or more reliably, supplementation.
My dosages are 200k to 300k IU’s per week and I cycle on and off. I also test levels on a regular.
The absolute only thing I changed after finally getting tested after 25 years on D-depleting carbamazepine/(Tegretol) was taking a supplement. No change in activity or UVB or diet.
Going from lowest 6ng/ml up to just under "sufficient" 30ng/ml on doctor Rx'd 5,000IU/day, then, with covid quadrupling that to 20,000IU/day to get above 50ng/ml before still catching an barely noticeable Delta, changed everything! Something she didn't mention and it goes right along with this, is lotion. Women especially smear lotion all over their body morning and sometimes evening. So what happens to it? We know all kinds of medicines are administered onto the skin, like seasick medicine, arthritis creams, etc. It goes into the body through our skin. Ok, would you drink that lotion? Of course not, but you are getting a dose every day. None of the lotions on the health food shelf DON'T have chemicals in them. So use coconut oil or lard for lotion. Yes, lard. As close to human fat as you can get. I eat it readily so it can't hurt you. Just a thought.
I like to use shea butter in the fall and winter.
Coconut oil or sesame oil for body, from supermarket or health food shop, cheap chemical free alternatives. Also jojoba oil for face and body .
This is great info to get out to the public so thanks for that. I just don’t understand why you kept saying 4000 was the upper tolerable limit. That’s not anywhere near the upper tolerable limit. There are many papers where they gave much more than that for extended periods with no side effect. None. I can tell you that most obese people will need to take 10k daily or more to have any shot at hitting that upper range of 60.
You must take 10K IU everyday if you are deficient which is 1 mg. Ref range is 30 -100, not 60.
@@aansul888 thanks for telling me what I already know. 60 is the low end of the target. You can’t say that I or anyone else has to take 10k. It depends on the person. For me it’s about 6k Altho in winter it’s 10m.
Because that's what the "authorities" say. We know it's nonsense. Wonder why they are saying that !?

I take all 3. Sometimes skip Mg2+ because it makes me kind of over-alert and increases tinnitus in the morning.

Worth noting that the original discovery of Vitamin D was associated with a particular disease, a long time ago, and the historic recommended minimum to deal with the childhood problems being studied at the time is almost certainly inadequate. They did not understand the complete functionality of it then. It varies quite a lot in different parts of the world too.
daily adequate sun exposure per day is 10,000 IU of vitamin D, I wake up before the sun, work all day inside and have a basement apartment at the very minimum I take 10,000 IU of vitamin D unless I've been outside for the majority of my day.
to get good levels of vitamin D you need enough good levels of magnesium to activated the vitamin D. Lot's of people that are deficient in vitmain D are already magneisum deficient. Then they get prescribed 25,000 or 50,000 ui of vitamin D from there doctors and get worse. The calcium is going in al the wrong places and they don;t know why i think when doctors prescribe vitamin D they should also prescribe magnesium and the good form of it not oxide
I have heard this and also vitamin k2 helps put calcium where it should be.
D3 and K2 plus magnesium glycinate. Not oxide. Live long and prosper.😊

It is a hormone and our body makes I through exposure to sunlight.
the Root Cause Protocol also takes the stance that storage D should be around 20 and we've been mislead about what a normal level is.
I started taking 3 g of omega3 a day and couldn’t believe the changes I saw, nails thicker, hair thicker….super weird but will take it, also so D3+K2 because of you too

Yes her assertion that 4000 is the upper tolerable amount is absurd.
So which is it? 6,000 - 12,000 UI/day or 4,000 UI/day?
@@HolisticPython yes it can be confusing. 4000iu is safe for adults and much higher can be tolerated. Every body is different due to age, skin tone, liver function, latitude, sun etc. A study was done in Minnesota for 7 years more than 6000 patients. The only person that developed hyper calcemia was a person taking 40,000iu per day and a calcium supplement and was reversed. I started at 4000iu per day and had a 25hydroxy but achieved 50 ng/ml. It takes over 6 Weekes for your body to absorb D. I then went to 10,000iu D3 per day and achieved 83ng/ml. My girlfriend takes 5000iu daily and it's at 93ng/ml. Very high D3 greater than 100,000iu is used for MS patients but requires a doctor supervision based on the Coimbra Protocol. Hope this helps.

4000 is probably safest and not irresponsible to tell people to take. You would need regular blood tests for lvls that high.
Some ppl are taking 20k iu,even 40k iu

Dr. Taylor 🥰 here. If your vitamin D blood test reads low. It is much more likely that you are low in zinc and/or magnesium. If your doctor will run your active vitamin D, calcitriol blood test, it will likely not be low.

What did it do for you
So the calcium in my blood was high for some reason on my last blood test. I had started taking calcium citrate for osteopenia, but I stopped because of palpitations. I read not to take vitamin d if your calcium is high. Any insight please?
I think the answer is to take vitamin D3 with K2. Google the relationship - hope that helps.
Avoid calcium for now and take magnesium glycinate its opposite. You can research a supplement called Bone Support .
Unfortunately I'm censored here
I've seen this case multiple times. These could be the reasons :
I've seen recommendations for 5000iu D3 along with 100mcg of K2. I take almost every day.
Question for Rhonda. Does two 20 minute sauna sessions in one day create the same benefit as one 20 minute session for one day and another 20 minute session the next day?
Vitamin D is in eggs, milk, tuna and red meat right? So wouldn't people get enough of Vitamin D if they ate a normal diet like this?
Most people would. But a lot of people just don't absorb/ retain Vit D from diet, sun exposure and even supplementing. I take 4,000iu a day (for years), am outside very often, eat a fully balanced diet and my levels don't go higher than 31-39 🤷🏽♀️
a long life in an old body is a curse. You guys who want to live long, don't forget it's gonna be life in an old body. Because magnesium can cause respiratory depression, consult your dr about taking supplements

What are the most effective/bioavailable supplements for people that don’t have a ton of access to sunlight?

Depending on where you are there isn’t enough sunlight.
