Hallelujah!
Grimbabe 😂
"Hey listen, you gotta tell me if you're a pirate." That line cracked me up and I have no idea why
The reason we never got an American McGees Alice film? Just two words Tim Burton.
Welp, at least we got Grim's songs, amirite?
Well in the early 2000s an American McGee's Alice movie was in the works at Universal Pictures (with Wes Craven as director and Sarah Michelle Gellar as producer) but was canceled for the R rating and budget discussions... later Tim Burton's Alice made 1 billion dollars in the global box office and then EA greenlighted Alice: Madness Returns...
The same two words shat all over Gene Wilder with a junk "remake"
The Tim Burton movie was absolute garbage and a big letdown for me. The 1999 Hallmark movie with Martin Short is so much better.
By the way... did you know that the Tim Burton one has a sequel? It was released in 2016 and I think I only learned about it by accident 2-3 years after the fact.
even after all these years this game seems extremely beautiful, just wow
Dude yeah I just wish the river segment didnt make me ragequit. Cant tell you how many times up until that point that I stopped and looked around
I'm with you here. Absolutely gorgeous game.
@@felixader yeah you gotta like the budding 3D era platformer jank. I didnt mind it much as it's fascinating to go back and go over personal gripes in your head but they REALLY couldve put a checkpoint at the top of that mountain in river of tears that was just too painful
This is the best birthday gift. I actually arrived to your channel years ago when searching for reviews of the original McGee's Alice. Loved your content since then.
Happy b day!
The artbook for this game is pretty amazing, I highly recommend it if you haven't looked into it already!
I have and it's like a million dang dollars now 😭
@@GrimBeard Dude that's crazy! I just looked it up and it's going for like $400! Lol this might be the only thing I've ever owned that's increased in value! I almost want to sell it, but it's such a gorgeous book!
The longer you keep the more valuable it will be
@@TheBrevosidy please stay away from casinos
Makes me glad I have my copy still. I also have Raising the Bar, the HL2 book. That shot up in price too
Re the sudden presence and importance of Lizzie in this game, my impression was that what happened was so traumatic to Alice that she initially kind of repressed the memory of her at all. The memories of the whole family only started coming back between the end of this game and the start of this one, in “therapy” sessions with Bumby. But the storytelling was a bit messy on this point so yeah it was a bit puzzling why suddenly there was a big sister.
I had a theory that Alice somehow knew what happened to the kids (between the 1st game ending and the 2nd game starting) and that she repressed that, with all of the game being some kind of catalyst of guilt that she knew what was going on but chose not to act or do anything to try to help the children. However, I can officially confirm that my theory was wrong. In fact, it was SO wrong, that the creator of the game actually took a break from bashing America on Twitter just to state how wrong I was for about 10-15 minutes straight.
Perfect for my sleep deprived induced psychosis
In 2023, Alice is dead and American has stepped away from gaming for good- so he says.. things could change, but it seems our wait for number 3 will never come to fruition. :(
Probably for the better tbh. Somebody younger will pick the torch.
The art book is one of the best I've read. Truly heartbreaking if this is the end
@user-vu6vf4ev4m yeah, can't wait to see a reboot with a black trans Alice
@@RaineErasmusWalker also blonde
Well EA is the reason for why the game will never be made, they own the IP and they said no thanks to the game
Oh sweet. This is gonna be interesting
Do you just look for videos about Alice? Is this why you’re smug? I’m confused…
Reading the artbook for this is heartbreaking: there's all this amazing concept art and these lush character designs and then you read the accompanying text about how excited they were to include this new area in the game, and it's inevitably followed by the words 'unfortunately, due to time/money constraints, we were not able to include this idea in the game'. They had plenty of time for Asian Wasp land, but not any of the better ideas in the game. And that's the saddest thing ever.
As of April this year, Alice Asylum is shelved 😢
I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed out loud at a video so frequently. thank you for this kind gift of content, grim.
Friendly request from a Patreon: please enable subtitles on these videos. It really helps when you're in noisy environments. You wouldn't want us to miss a word of these wonderfully written scripts.
Click the “CC”. It’s closed captions.
I'm so happy for this. I haven't even watched it yet.
Same
I'm so happy for this comment. Haven't even read it yet.
Oh sweet, a new Grimmy video. I'll finish my homework, watch that, and then go to bed.
Finishes homework, loads up the video... see the video duration...
"oh fuck me"
Paradox of Grim reviews - if it's game review I hesitate because I don't want to spoil the game for myself, if it's Supernatural then I hesitate before watching actual show because I don't want to spoil Grims review.
This is still one of the best looking games, to me. I remember being really impressed with the hair and dress physics too.
Every time I see an upload from Grimdaddy, it fills my heart with such joy that my favorite RUclipsr has not quit making videos. You are criminally underrated Grim and as long as it makes you happy, I hope you never stop!
I waited a year, since discovering your chanel for this review. This is my favorite game.
You've definitely become my favorite youtube gaming review channel, you give such passion and thought to your reviews and it's so clear how deeply you love the artistic and storytelling possibilities gaming presents. Mostly commenting to just give you some engagement points and say good job lol
Master Beard, you've inspired me to finally take a swing at painting my nails and the shame about doing that for the first time as a 30-year-old goth is that clearly people should start doing that at 15 FOR A REASON. Yours look phenomenal. Mine look like the Khmer Rouge's killing fields.
Anyway, it's been a fun experiment (which I intend to continue), and a real feather in the cap of enjoying the shit out of your ouvre. I've been basically ripping through your entire library/backlog and playing ARPGs. AND I found you right after a breakup; your reviews have really helped me to avoid that crushing ennui that comes after a breakup, usually. So very thank for that.
You do wonderful work, my G; never change, never stop. Unless you want to. In which case, def stop with my blessing.
I know I'm a little late to the party here, but I just wanted to add one little detail on the environments in this particular game.
Each of the areas you visit (outside of the first one triggered by Pris Witless) is themed around one of the adults in her life that has held a major influence in her mental development. In particular, the one I wish to mention is the Asia-Inspired level. This level is meant to be a nod to her family's lawyer, Mr. Radcliffe, who for lack of a better term is an Otaku. Absolutely enamored with Japan, it's culture, history, ascetic, the works. This is mentioned in some of the notes you can read in game as well as in some of the memory fragments. While it does feel out of place in the rest of the game, it makes sense in context of the lore and thematic symbolism they were trying to aim for.
Figured I should leave this hear for anyone who was curious, great videos, and definitely earned a sub from me 👍
yo, the birthday massacre rules
also you should put "hoover that goo" on a shirt
You have quickly become one of my favorite game reviewers. Keep up the good work on quality stuff. Stay Goth, Stay Gaming.
This video deserves so much attention, your editing and delivery is on point.
I've been consuming all of your content extremely muchly and I feel like all of it has served to set me up for this review. The dresses and story are what I'm here for.
I don't think the ''Oriental Grove'' was a nod to the game being developed in China.
It's a representation of the culture of the time, Japonisme.
After Japan opened it's borders (Thanks, Mr. Perry~), a big part of the European high society was fascinated by Japanese history and art and started importing and imitating it.
I recommend people to look it up, since a lot of artists from the XIX century were influenced by it.
I did not know that and that does give it way more historic cause to be there. That level does include both Japanese and Chinese art styles because Radcliff's parents died in Tokyo and Shanghai, but that is explained in like a single throwaway line so I just figured they thought it would be fun to explore both cultures, but it's cool that there is more going on there.
The mix between Japanese and Chinese art could also likely represent how Alice (or even the average person in London) really knows the difference between the two cultures.
Discovered your channel a week ago and have been binging a lot of your stuff, keep up the great work!
You and Gman really coming out with the banger Alice content and I couldn't be happier.
For anyone looking for a rabbit animated clip in 33:28, it's from Curious Alice from 1971, it's on youtube
You sweet, glorious man, blessin’ us with a video this late in the evening; keep up the good work, Grim! ❤️
Unfortunately very recently EA more or less went ahead and put the stops to any Alice 3 prospects American has spent a long time trying to make a reality over on Patreon. Big rip
My sister and I played this so much back in the day. It was one of those games we bought randomly and ended up enjoying so much. Very happy to see you doing a review on it! Also 44:14
This game still looks breathtaking in places
I've wanted to see your take on this game for a long time. I really enjoyed seeing your take on one of my favorite games to watch people play. There were some good jokes in this one, too!
as soon as i saw this in my subscription tab i felt instantly blessed. loved the first Alice review ❤
this channel is super underrated, loved looking at the art of this game back then
Minor correction to his comments about the availability of Alice 1.
One the Xbox backcompat version for One and Series s/x that is on EAplay/Game Pass Ultimate of Madness Returns DOES contain the first game. Playable from the main menu
Really that's at least something
Can confirm. I just wish they’d let you play it on Xbox Cloud Gaming man
Great video, as always! Makes me want to return to this game, which I was really hyped about it's release and just didn't get to complete. Really enjoyed your take on the plot and user reviews section of the video. May be one of your best reviews to date. Thanks for your hard work!
@grimbeard know this video is a year old, but at 42:50 you mention a game where you want to be tiny. Maybe you'd like TinyKin if you havent heard of it already. Tiny lil person wandering around houses helping tiny lil bug peoples, its adorable
Goddamn this is a great review of this game, It was a pleasant surprise to hear someone dive into some of the backgrounds of influence and nuance as to how some of the thematic constructs are presented rather than just 'this is the gameplay, these are the mechanics, the graphics look like x, good game/bad game, thanks you can write my cheque out to Dr. D-...*muffled screams*
Ah yes, a video at 1 in the morning! How did you know that I wanted to be sleep deprived today? And a hour long too! You spoil me.
Right?! My thoughts exactly
That's some real quality content, babe. I think this one is my new favorite. I live for those dresses too lol
53:35
spat coffee all over my keyboard
yet another layer of crust to the collection
The nosebleed joke after that incoherent review had me laughing for minutes!
Watching this while suffering through a pretty terrible flood in Germany, actually its a great distraction, so thx, good timing!
Hope you're doing okay!
@@GrimBeard thank you, we have great help here, it's a pretty big destructive mess but I can cope. :) "what doesn't kill you..."
Know I'm very late, but I recently played this on the Xbox Game Pass. I think the Vorpal Blade does change with upgrades! The slice animations that happen when the blade is swinging during combat seemed to gain colors as I upgraded: blue, then red, then purple
Thanks to this video I learned why I'm so obsessed with this game altough I always knew how many issues It has. Thank you
To "ruin" a young person in Victorian times was a euphemism for doing questionable sex things to them, more used for children "of good family". When you said there was an evil train that brought ruin to wonderland, my heart sank.
I about fell out of my coffin when you said The Birthday Massacre. I did have a year I was super into them even bought a shirt at one of their shows in a dive bar in Texas. It's in the back of my closet somewhere. It doesn't fit me anymore...
I really liked your commentary. Very chill and a great sense of humor. Will be subscribing!
Good video Grim. You've given this now hidden gem the treatment it deserves
i really appreciate the way you write, very poetic somehow. you don't see a lot of game reviewers and commentators communicate the way you do. your content never ceases to refresh me!
the hair physics in this game are still better than games today
13:45 i legitimately laughed for around 10 minutes straight over this bit. The sea shanty at the end was just too perfect.
Im glad you still have time to make these at the shelter, god bless
I never played the first game, but I threw a solid 50 hours into this game in order to complete it, and I regret nothing. The Orientalism section was the only part which seemed to drag a bit.
This is beautiful. You need more views and subscribers.
Okay, HOLY SHIT DUDE, I have had this VIVID memory of a game from my childhood which I could never find and it was totally Scrapland. I have no idea whether or not it's any good but for some reason it's been hanging around in my noggin forever and you name-dropping it has finally put my brain at peace.
Also keep up the good work, watching your videos have kept me going in dark times. Much love.
45:00 Its the tea and/or porcelain themed level.
I remember when I was kid and I found the demo of of the first game in some PC magazine, and it completely captivated me. And then when I learned that McGee was making sequel I was so excited. Well when the MR come out I was so excited about it. Though I was little disappointed with it ( I was too much hyped about it) still I had great time playing it.
Solid review my guy!!! This makes me want Alice Asylum even more tbh.
Goddamn, Grim, more than an hour of review-content ? You're spoiling us. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
33:00 actually, the reason they didn't do bosses was time and budget issues
If only they had a big well known publisher with FIFA money to back them 😢
A head shrink or shrink sense makes total sense. You're made smaller in order to see and navigate the world in a different way, same thing the dollmaker does squeezing out wonderland. I never picked that up when I played, great catch.
Never stop this format. I think when i roll out of bed tomorrow I think I'll be a patron for the first time.
“It’s not about how tight the queen of the damned soundtrack is” hey you know what, that SHOULD BE a game. I guess a rhythm game?
Just found your channel today and I've been going through your older vids including this one (obviously). A friend of mine actually worked on the original game as a texture artist. All hand painted stuff, which is really cool. Just photoshop and a Wacom tablet, no fancy highpoly bakes or Substance Painter. :P
as soon as i saw the video, i clicked and liked. the quality of your videos is so good, that i don't need to see them as whole to like them. fun fact: i discovered your channel by searching for a alice (2000) review. yours was the best, with all the details and your humour.
Dear god, she's battling The Heartless from Kingdom Hearts.
Thanks for this. I appreciate it. You cover some games that I probably never would have explored despite being curious about them. I think there are some things just lost in the generational divide. Or half-generational divide or whatever. Edit: I couldn't remember the term "demographic" for a minute. That was nice.
I pretty much exclusively play modern military games, but alice madness returns is my favorite game.
American McGee is brilliant.
after doing intensive research (scrolling for hours) i've found a user who is currently developing alice asylum as a fan project. they are basing everything off of the design bible as well, so i trust that tbe game will be of wonderful (pun intended) quality!
Thank you so much! One of the most underrated series 💕💕💕 I think you did a good job and I appreciate you taking the time to figure out how to get it up and running! I think everything you said is fair and true to the game! Keep it up!
Idk why, but how your humor got elevated in the second half really threw me for a loop. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
Gotta HOOVER THAT GOO!!
Ohhh i wonder how they corrupted the fairytale where a bunch of kids "play butcher" and slice a kids neck open in the street. I just can't imagine what could be done to such a wholesome story.
My favorite game and my favorite youtuber... A perfect and unique combo
I feel like you live within a timeless void, where every time period just seeps into your reality.
I remember cranking the PhysX to max and being blown away by the graphics. The flower petals falling to the ground after the double jump and so on looks amazing.
The "strungle" is real, Man!
Idgaf what anyone says. The Birthday Massacre still slaps. So does Android Lust. I will die on this hill.
I loved this game. The action and fighting felt so satisfying, especially when you dodged. I remember it being buggy with lots of visual glitches. Also, the lack of boss characters was a poor decision, especially given the episodic nature of the original books. It really needed fun bosses for each of the hubs. When it's "standard enemies but more of them" it comes across as lazy instead of subversive. But I still replayed this over on nightmare because it was so much fun
American deserves a third Alice game. The series makes money on shirts and mousepads. The craftmanship is actually there.
Oh, Grimmie. Thank God. I was afraid the corpse under my bed was you.
Hope you're doin well Grim
That jellyfish dress kicks ass
Got it for $4.90 on the Origin/EA store. Fun platformer. Kinda wished the Complete Edition was available though, woulda been fun to play the old school original.
GOTH GAMING NATION
I would have loved to see "Wes Cravens, American McGees Alice by Lewis Carroll with Sarah Michelle Gellar"
If for no other reason than a title with forty two names in it and a single word as the title.
Only 8 minutes in and already have a few banger bits. Criminally underrated RUclips channel.
13:13 "uuuuuhhh, 's goin' on there" 😂😂😂
What a pleasant surprise to wake up to, have really enjoyed catching up with your channel since I discovered it. I will enjoy your video, Mr. Beard, with my morning coffee!
Thank you for making these videos. I love watching them.
I first got really I to video games in 2010, wo I find it odd that I'd never even heard of this game until a couple years ago. I have a strong suspicion that EA may have intentionally dropped the ball on marketing the game considering it had a well known developer who had the power to wrestle creative control
Sup goth gamer
SAMMY!
sup
Fuck man you absolute legend. Thank you!.
had to comment just to say, 24 minutes in, yes The Birthday Massacre are a band you should still be into, they're such an underrated band. Saw them live a couple months ago, so so good
Lizzie was suppressed by Alice's brain because all the bullshit that occurred, happened because of what happened to her
The boss battles were scrapped because, well, EA pulled an EA and you know how it is
This feels like the kind of game I should watch someone play. You know, someone wholesome and isn't a gamer with a hard G.
