    Proud to say I bought Apidya in its big box version at launch! Wish I still had it. I read a few good reviews and could see it was special. Definitely the best shoot ‘em up on the Amiga for me and is still in my top ten favourite games of all time. Other Amiga shooters had nice graphics or music, or played well. Apidya had it all in one game and was the closest to a Japanese title on the machine, being heavily inspired by Gradius in mechanics and gameplay but with a less traditional setting.

    • @UnboxRacing

      And that's the crux there. Closest to a Japanese title. Like Star Soldier, Gradius, Gun Nac, Zanac, Soldier Blade. Amiga did not really advance on these, but regressed a bit. The amiga exclusives are a joy but I hate the one button mechanic, it's so limiting.

    • @rosstee
      @rosstee 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@UnboxRacing Well yeah, I don't think anyone who loves shoot 'em ups is claiming the Amiga has the best, but the best on the Amiga are worth a look. I agree about one button games, but I'm pretty sure Apidya and a few others support a two button controller.

    An excellent exclusive Amiga shoot-em-up is Fly Harder, with the same principle as Zarathrusta but with better graphics, animation and musics.
    About Banshee: I wanted to like this game, but I hated it. It looked like a typical game of the Bitmap Brother, and had the same flaws: 25fps animation (which is a no-go for a shoot-em-up) and no in-game musics. It just had nice graphics.
    I regret that Rainbow Arts didn't make a shmup based on the level 3 of Turrican 2. It has everything : 5 levels parallax scrollings, 50fps, colorful, fast, in game musics... It could have been the base for a whole game.

    Hybris has forgettable music? Damn.. literally some of my favourite video game music ever. Paul van der Valk is easily up there with Hüelsbeck in my opinion, it's a shame he didn't do more soundtracks.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, it's an odd one. I don't dislike the music at all, it's just one I can never remember. Like, ask me to hum Agony's music, and I can do it instantly. But Hybris never sticks with me.

    • @MacXpert74
      @MacXpert74 2 года назад +2

      I also like the music in Hybris. This was one of my favorite shooter games on the Amiga at the time. @7:44 'onaretrotip' said his weapons 'randomly changed'. I had to laugh a bit. It's not a random change, but the weapons expansion mode. It's activated with the return key. These expansion modes are normally 30 sec., but this can be changed in the game menu before you start. When you have progressed to weapon type 4, and use this mode, the rotating shield makes you invincible, as enemy ships can't penetrate it. I always tried to play in such a way that I could use weapon 4 the most (by first upgrading to 5, and then letting one shield be hit so it collapses back to weapon 4). A very enjoyable game in my opinion.

      With Hybris you get 3 of those weapon expands, press enter to activate iirc. Each different weapon has a different type of weapon expansion plus you have 3 smart bombs.
      The idea of the weapon expansion is so you can shoot enemies behind the barriers without having to pass the barrier.

    Rescuing the humanoids in Amnios was an alternative way of summoning the bosses. Destroying different things in the landscape also had effects of their own, represented by those icons in the top-right. Mainly it affected how baddies could attack you, things like fire rate, accuracy, or even generation of the baddies themselves. I think you could even stop them shooting completely.
    They took a lot of inspiration from Sinistar and Defender and Asteroids, like you said. I think it would have been better if it were zoomed out a ways, though, especially with the sort of "half-step" scrolling and everything.

It's definitely something along those lines.
      I could be remembering incorrectly, but I think one of the 2 is for smart bombs and the other to detach your weapons. I do recall it was nigh on avoidable to accidently do it from time to time, although after a while you can get used to it without doing it often.

Unfortunately, years of playing Japanese shoot 'em ups on other platforms have soured me on the vast majority on Amiga and ST shmups. Great video! I had many of these games back in the day! A few comments from an old-timer, for what it's worth:
    Uridium 2: I consider this a flawed masterpiece. Beautifully smooth & fast, great 32-colour graphics and gorgeous animations - particularly the weapons effects. But the mini-game once you landed on the ship was a bit rubbish. Still, a programming tour-de-force from Andrew Braybrook and great use of the Amiga's chipset.
    Apidya: a great shooter. Terrific graphics & music - and uses pretty much every technical trick on the Amiga. Level 3's animated parallax background has to be seen to be believed.
    Agony: lots of impressive graphical effects, but the game itself is not great - more like an interactive graphical demo than a game.
    Datastorm: Well, hold on there - this is the best Defender clone on the Amiga. Looks like an 8-bit game...? I don't think so! The graphics have been kept simple to facilitate the dazzling particle effects, with craft splintering into tons of tiny pieces - this is visually spectacular. Also, the giant end-of-level baddies are seriously impressive and definitely don't look 8-bit...
    Hybris: love the music in this game! The only problem is that it gets interrupted by the sound effects. That should have been better managed. I notice a lot of people say that Hybris is the game that convinced them to get an Amiga - because it looked and played just like a proper arcade
    game...
    Amnios: great "alien" graphic style - and it uses 64-colour half-brite mode. Unfortunately, this results in a low-ish frame rate, and that kind of kills the game...
    Disposable Hero: this is a technical marvel. For ages, I assumed it was an AGA game. Nope! The quality of the pixel art and enemy graphic design here is outstanding BUT, the background is way too cluttered with visual elements - and that raging red colour needed to be toned down. A game that I admire a lot but find it very hard to look at...

It’s basically the Amiga’s Gradius mechanically, but with a more interesting setting and more character, plus a fantastic soundtrack not far behind the likes of Turrican 2 thanks to Mr H. Most importantly of all it plays very well, as close to a Japanese style as anything else on the machine including some actual Japanese game ports such as the excellent R-Types you mentioned. Disposable Hero and Banshee aren’t bad but no shoot ‘em up should have an energy bar, it’s just lazy design.
