These clean up nice in the kitchen sink with fairy liquid and a nail brush. T-cut on the window. I have one of the original 87s and it developed an interesting fault where it emptied the battery through the piezo sounder. Turns out the sounder always has battery volts across it and this is fine because it is purely capacitive - trouble is, it went bad and started conducting and this drained the battery in a matter of weeks. I replaced the rear case with sounder with that from another broken 87 but an alternative fix would have been a series cap.

Seem to remember you can push the control shaft (hard) from the inside and it slides apart. Though I've been inside a variety and might be muddling them up.

Oh thanks for that, I have a couple of 87's that don't last long on batteries. Cheers.

Not many things as satisfying as a successful repair. Repair, re-purpose & recycle. Plus you have some spares. Last time I purchased one of those fuse elements they were going for about $8 USD. I'm guilty of blowing at least two of them in moments of self idiocy Thanks Simon great work as always, Paul.

Very nice repair, Simon. I own an 8025A (military version) and an 87 Mk III, both excellent meters with very fast response. I believe that if you support the front panel and press (hard) on the shaft the knob will pop out of the white detent mechanism. Thank you for an interesting video. Regards, David.

We used to call those extra units "parts mules" for their desirable components to use sometime in the future! Nice fix Simon...stay safe!

Very enjoyable Mr Spiers. The Fluke has come good. One out of two faulty ain't bad at all. Nice job.

Smashing repair simon :-D, having a broken meter to steal the parts from was well worth the money.
I imagine the function knob is just a close fit, so it should push out, try the spare one to see.
i was given a low end fluke a month back, it looked horrible with black crud all over it.
it also looked like a mechanics kick around meter.
Washing up liquid and warm water removed all the crud, almost new looking :-D.
The function switch was a bit dicky so a cotton bud and alcohol fixed that.
it's a low end fluke 111 and seems accurate enough, i checked my pile of multimeters against it and they were all close enough for me.

Nice one Simon. That’s a great little meter brought back from the dead. It did put up a good fight though. Looks like it has some nice features as well. Cheers Graham

@@SoddingaboutSi Yes, I have to agree. I bought a nice Fluke meter for $60.00 at a second hand shop. It was a lucky find for that price. I'd like to find another to keep kicking around in the shop. I had no idea that a lot of these parts were interchangeable.

@14:15 the ceramic resistor arrays are well worth keeping too... some of those are expensive to get.

Ah yes the Fluke 87. The workhorse meter for every field engineer that ever needed to make an electrical measurement for many years. The one you thought you got stung on turned out good in the end. If the fuses are good in it that's got to be a plus too for the prices those are going for today. Speaking of those fuses. There are a lot of Chinese knock offs of them on the market. The jury seems to be out on whether they are any good or not. I guess only the fuse manufacturers like Bussman would have the testing facilities to determine that for certain and they ain't saying. Stay well ATB Doug.

How did you manage to get the yellow holder so clean? I can never seem to fully clean the ingrained dirt and oil out of those holders.
