  • Today I must repair my firebrick foundry furnace. Nothing lasts forever, especially things that contain a massive amount of fire. I inspect the furnace's satanite coating and apply a little extra.

    Chances are people are asking about the furnace because they came to this channel with that interest already in mind. I know I did, and seeing you work through some issues has been really educational.

    Guess the best bet would be to put a cushion of hi temp wool between the steel and bricks, maybe 1/4" thick, to prevent the steel compressing the brick joints.

    I finally fixed my propane burner issue that wasn't getting hot enough, it was air flow! I just rebuilt my old sand/plaster furnace and upgraded it to ceramic fiber blanket and... SATANITE! I ordered 10 pounds of Satanite because I wanted to be sure my 6 gallon bucket furnace would be covered in several coatings... 5# would have been more than enough, 10 pounds of Satanite is a LOT of material! I became interested in this when I ran across your channel one late night, that might have been a mistake thinking back... :D

    Hello from TN. I enjoy your videos and especially the commentary as you do it. Pretty entertaining and informative. I use Green Patch 421. It’s rated at 3200’ also. Makes a great mortar for bricks as well as a coating to help with the efficiency of a furnace. I also tried it as a type of refractory, i mixed 1 part green patch to 5 parts perlite and added water as necessary. I built a forge and used it as the refractory and it came out great. I actually found a place on line where i can get it for $87 for a 50# pail. Delivered its around $124.00 if i remember right. Anyways, cheers from one scrapper/smelter to another.

    Greetings. I watch many of your videos. Awesome stuff. Look into Green Patch 421 also. Awesome as a mortar and a kaowool/refractory cement covering. Also rated at 3200’ F. Found it for $87 plus tax and shipping for a 50# pail. Peace out. Amazon sells it for $87 per 15# pail.

    By the way I labored on a brick through when I was read out of high school and we rebuilt the Coke Ovens in Detroit even professional foundries crumble it's just the nature of the Beast you use them for as many times as you can and then you rebuild them that's how it works don't worry about it it's never going to be perfect

    I've been experimenting with refractory cement over the kaowool. Worked out so far except I suck at mixing cement... Never tried or heard of Satanite though.

    It looks like you mixed it to thin, that means more water that needs to escape and more air voids left over. Less water means stronger mortar.

    I redid my furnace and don’t expect it to hold up. I used a fire brick mortar and even though it’s rated pretty high temp, I just know I’ll have to redo it. Next time santite.

    The only thing I'm wondering about is the oxidation of the steel holding the firebrick of your lid up. It looks like the scale is peeling off and its probably only a matter of time, could be a long time who knows, before its completely eaten away. Other than that little thing, great video and I'm sure I'm not the only one benefiting a ton from your content! Thanks so much! My new furnace with most likely a similar design to yours is going to be started this summer. P.S., are you still planning on making silicon bronze?

    I have furnace bricks that look just like red bricks. I made a large furnace and metal melts pretty good. I have even melted brass in my furnace.... I can melt as much as 3 gallons of metal or more.

    Try using s/s filler when TIG welding. It's way easier, stronger, and looks better. You can use it on almost anything. Mild steel, stainless, copper, brass and when welding dissimilar metals as well.

    Hey Paul, What size Crucible do you use? Ive been really enjoying the videos man, keep it up!

  • @swdweeb
    @swdweeb 6 лет назад +7

    FWIW, after having plinths stuck to the bottom of my crucible, I recently started putting a piece of cardboard between the plinth and the crucible. I does stop the crucible and plinth from sticking but you do end up with a little ash running around but it seems far less irritating that dealing with stuff hanging on to my crucible.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb 6 лет назад

      Once I had stuff stuck to the bottom of the crucible, I didn't want to break it off for fear that it would break the crucible. So there was no way or reason to use cardboard. When i repaired my lining, I also bought a new crucible so I was went ahead and broke the stuff off the old one. It didn't break so I still have a spare but now I use cardboard.

      I coated my plinth and the crucible outside walls and bottom with satanite. Not only is my plinth still in one piece, but it also doesn't stick to the crucible anymore.

    Do you think the trash can foundry would work decently with kaolwool and a layer of satinite? I want to start dabbling into this but I want to start small.

    • @stamasd8500
      @stamasd8500 6 лет назад +4

      I made mine from a 6-gallon metal can which I lined inside with 1-inch kaowool. Then I applied inside 3 coats of satanite. Everything inside, including the lid (which also has a layer of kaowool). Also coated with satanite the plinth and the crucible exterior. It's held remarkably well together through many copper and bronze melts over the past 4 months.

    A cheap and easy way to build a cart for your furnace? Get a lawnmower, take off the motor and blade, attach the furnace where the motor was. Voila, a furnace on wheels, now take the rest of the day off. If only you knew someone who was some kind of an appliance repairman and thus would have easy access to old lawnmowers.....

    seen them use the Ceramic Fiber stuff wish worked ok it IS a lot lighter
    allso seen someone coat the inside of the Ceramic Fiber with the fireproof concrete and it didnt crack after drying it and putting it through a couple of heat cycles (starting with lightbulb and ending up with longer and longer propane burns)
    the Ceramic Fiber got soaked with the fireproof concrete and the fibers i think reinforces it preventing cracks from lengtening of even forming
    as for the hairdryer weakening ....... could it be the fanblades are melting ?
    maibe get a cheap turbo from somewhere and rebuild that intoo an electric blower
