Fixing the Fire Brick Foundry Furnace, and Using Satanite

- Today I must repair my firebrick foundry furnace. Nothing lasts forever, especially things that contain a massive amount of fire. I inspect the furnace's satanite coating and apply a little extra.

Chances are people are asking about the furnace because they came to this channel with that interest already in mind. I know I did, and seeing you work through some issues has been really educational.
Guess the best bet would be to put a cushion of hi temp wool between the steel and bricks, maybe 1/4" thick, to prevent the steel compressing the brick joints.
i've been wanting satanite since i watched your build video and now i have a better idea of its properties and shortcomings thanks for the update and the comedy as usual
I finally fixed my propane burner issue that wasn't getting hot enough, it was air flow! I just rebuilt my old sand/plaster furnace and upgraded it to ceramic fiber blanket and... SATANITE! I ordered 10 pounds of Satanite because I wanted to be sure my 6 gallon bucket furnace would be covered in several coatings... 5# would have been more than enough, 10 pounds of Satanite is a LOT of material! I became interested in this when I ran across your channel one late night, that might have been a mistake thinking back... :D
Hey man i have been following your channel and you lid design makes the most practical sence as far as weight balance against itself...
Hello from TN. I enjoy your videos and especially the commentary as you do it. Pretty entertaining and informative. I use Green Patch 421. It’s rated at 3200’ also. Makes a great mortar for bricks as well as a coating to help with the efficiency of a furnace. I also tried it as a type of refractory, i mixed 1 part green patch to 5 parts perlite and added water as necessary. I built a forge and used it as the refractory and it came out great. I actually found a place on line where i can get it for $87 for a 50# pail. Delivered its around $124.00 if i remember right. Anyways, cheers from one scrapper/smelter to another.
Greetings. I watch many of your videos. Awesome stuff. Look into Green Patch 421 also. Awesome as a mortar and a kaowool/refractory cement covering. Also rated at 3200’ F. Found it for $87 plus tax and shipping for a 50# pail. Peace out. Amazon sells it for $87 per 15# pail.
Great video. You should do more of these 'what I've learned' type of vids.
Lol Paul. I an working on building a foundry using a beer keg from Brian oltrogges video. He sells his plan for $10.00 and includes plans for the torch he made. Good video again.
By the way I labored on a brick through when I was read out of high school and we rebuilt the Coke Ovens in Detroit even professional foundries crumble it's just the nature of the Beast you use them for as many times as you can and then you rebuild them that's how it works don't worry about it it's never going to be perfect
Bloody hell RUclips!! I missed so many of your videos. Now to binge watch from here 😂
Yeah youtube does that sometimes
I've been experimenting with refractory cement over the kaowool. Worked out so far except I suck at mixing cement... Never tried or heard of Satanite though.
It looks like you mixed it to thin, that means more water that needs to escape and more air voids left over. Less water means stronger mortar.
The steel frame may have cracked it from expanding and contracting
Satanite you say🤔 I hope I can source some locally that stuff l👀ks bloody great 👍🏻
An acetylene torch will take care of those little burrs on the lid quite quickly
Good review on the Satanite, I may use that instead of QF-180 on my keg build. Don't see Paul on GRM much anymore, have you abandoned the old hive or greener pastures?
I redid my furnace and don’t expect it to hold up. I used a fire brick mortar and even though it’s rated pretty high temp, I just know I’ll have to redo it. Next time santite.
The only thing I'm wondering about is the oxidation of the steel holding the firebrick of your lid up. It looks like the scale is peeling off and its probably only a matter of time, could be a long time who knows, before its completely eaten away. Other than that little thing, great video and I'm sure I'm not the only one benefiting a ton from your content! Thanks so much! My new furnace with most likely a similar design to yours is going to be started this summer. P.S., are you still planning on making silicon bronze?
It just wouldn't be a Paul's Garage video without you lifting something and going "Yeergh".
Lol notice that too
Nyert? Haha! Do you use your piece of railroad track as an anvil? I cut a 1' piece off of a 4' section (heavy) that I got from a yard sale for $10... $2.50 anvil? (Score!) Love your videos! Thank you!
I have furnace bricks that look just like red bricks. I made a large furnace and metal melts pretty good. I have even melted brass in my furnace.... I can melt as much as 3 gallons of metal or more.
I WONDER IF THE BRICK MELTED, BUT IF IT RELEASES THE CRUCIBLE WHEN HEATED, THAT IS MOST LIKELY THE FLUX!
You can also try Boron Nitride coatings. If you want to know more about fluxing let me know, its what I do for a living.
its yard sale season paul, i bet you can get a few hairdryers for cheep . thanks for sharing
an electric leaf blower does the trick also
Try using s/s filler when TIG welding. It's way easier, stronger, and looks better. You can use it on almost anything. Mild steel, stainless, copper, brass and when welding dissimilar metals as well.
was hoping someone would give some welding tips, last one looks great, maybe could use a little more filler, good job.
When welding try signing your name along your weld. But supper small!!!
Hey Paul, What size Crucible do you use? Ive been really enjoying the videos man, keep it up!
FWIW, after having plinths stuck to the bottom of my crucible, I recently started putting a piece of cardboard between the plinth and the crucible. I does stop the crucible and plinth from sticking but you do end up with a little ash running around but it seems far less irritating that dealing with stuff hanging on to my crucible.
About time!
Once I had stuff stuck to the bottom of the crucible, I didn't want to break it off for fear that it would break the crucible. So there was no way or reason to use cardboard. When i repaired my lining, I also bought a new crucible so I was went ahead and broke the stuff off the old one. It didn't break so I still have a spare but now I use cardboard.
I coated my plinth and the crucible outside walls and bottom with satanite. Not only is my plinth still in one piece, but it also doesn't stick to the crucible anymore.
I was watching thinking, I feel like I have already watched this and seen him coat this thing already... LOL
Do you think the trash can foundry would work decently with kaolwool and a layer of satinite? I want to start dabbling into this but I want to start small.
I made mine from a 6-gallon metal can which I lined inside with 1-inch kaowool. Then I applied inside 3 coats of satanite. Everything inside, including the lid (which also has a layer of kaowool). Also coated with satanite the plinth and the crucible exterior. It's held remarkably well together through many copper and bronze melts over the past 4 months.
Opening clamps results in the sound nyurt
Hi Paul, do you have any plans for connecting the lid to the furnace. May be a nice welding job for your wife. Greetings and have a nice weekend from Germany :D
Im thinking of better handles but still leaving it loose so i can remove it, but handles might be a fun projecy
I’d make another lid but for the lid use kaowool (ceramic fiber) and use some hinges
Would the Satanite adhere to the steel on the bottom of the lid??
You ever try to add liquid glass to your bricks heard it might help a lot better on heat
I have never tried that, just the satanite. Satanite is pretty great stuff
Coopered? Are we now making Rum barrels?
Ceramic insulation or fire bricks Which is better?
Hey! Me and my orange beard resemble that...
A cheap and easy way to build a cart for your furnace? Get a lawnmower, take off the motor and blade, attach the furnace where the motor was. Voila, a furnace on wheels, now take the rest of the day off. If only you knew someone who was some kind of an appliance repairman and thus would have easy access to old lawnmowers.....
Perhaps instead of using satenite as a mortar I should use "liquid cement"
Beep beep. Paint the jeep. 😊 👍
Where in the world do you get crucibles?
PMC supplies, they have a website
seen them use the Ceramic Fiber stuff wish worked ok it IS a lot lighter
allso seen someone coat the inside of the Ceramic Fiber with the fireproof concrete and it didnt crack after drying it and putting it through a couple of heat cycles (starting with lightbulb and ending up with longer and longer propane burns)
the Ceramic Fiber got soaked with the fireproof concrete and the fibers i think reinforces it preventing cracks from lengtening of even forming
as for the hairdryer weakening ....... could it be the fanblades are melting ?
maibe get a cheap turbo from somewhere and rebuild that intoo an electric blower

I never used borax and my graphite crucible looks the same or worse.
Hey! I have an orange beard and put stuff on the internet!
Wait...no...you're right. Don't trust me either.
Hey, way off topic, will ypu make an aluminum ball? One of the mirror polished ones
Go to your local goodwill and buy 4-5 hairdryers for $20
3:35 Welp...
You satanite guy you lol great discussion!
Banana for scale, not fingers, duh!
Make new lid show how
Use plastor of paris
Speaking from personal experience, plaster of paris cracks a lot, even with sand and perlite mixed in. It also crumbles apart if it gets even a little bit wet.
Second!
Actually third ;)
Dagnam it! Foiled again!
Is kale would what vegans wear
And how well did your wife do TIG welding?
Keep talking man, your weirdness is your brand.
First
Cam confirm first
Tell the truth..... Your wife made them welds .🙃
Sour cream is gross.
Drinking before making a video makes it harder to speak.
