Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky" - The Nighclub Scene

  • Tom Cuise's great perfomance of eccentricity, solitude and madness in "Vanilla Sky" (2001) by Cameron Crowe, remake of "Abre los Ojos" by Alejandro Amenabar.
    Being alone among hundred people ; feeling distressed in a place of party ; to have one's soul corrupted and overwhelmed by suffering and scars of the body ; seeing the other, just there but carried away far from us by fear and unrest ; feeling devastated like ruins or a shadow draging on its pain ; to finish the self-destruction process, acting like a freak you think you became with people you love and let your own discomfort becoming theirs...
    This amazing scene from "Vanilla Sky" illustrates the huge talent of Tom Cruise to perform troubled, tortured, eccentric, pathetic, funny, touching and disturbing characters, all that in the same part!
    I'm fascinated by the insane gestures, the funny expressions, the lunatic attitude of David in that scene ; the way his mask seems like a second face in his back and make him a kind of freaking creature ; the flagrant and paradoxical solitude of the character in the middle of the mob ; the painful and crazy laugh in front of the mirror ; all the hands of the dancers, moving like snakes, over the top of the strobes...

He’s trying so hard to make it work, to fake it until he makes it, to pretend like nothings changed. The reactions of everyone around him... avoiding eye contact... not responding with the same energy... ugh. So heartbreaking.
    Then Sofia showed up in the morning and said she loved him, and I genuinely bought into it for a while and it was so happy... this movie really ripped my heart out :(

      It's definitely one of those "too good to be true" moments. Even David said "this is a joke right?". I've had dreams like that before. Where things just sort of fall into place and you're questioning whether it's real or not.

    When you really think about it, everything is Brian's fault...
    First he tells Julie that David allegedly referred to her as a fuck buddy (when it was Brian who did) leading to David's accident.
    Now he also tells David that Sofia allegedly said that 'they only met once'... shattering whatever sliver of confidence David had left.
    So you know what: Fuck you Brian! worse best friend ever.

    • @detubeme
      @detubeme 8 лет назад +27

      +Roleplayer The Acting David boned Julie while knowing that was Brian's dream girl. Fair enough, Brian had no claim over some random actress/model, and David is rich and good looking enough to get her. But then, David "stole" Sofia from Brian who actually met her first and invited her to the party. That's why Brian was upset enough to maybe drunkenly let something slip to Julie. When David confronts him, Brian might be denying it because he doesn't remember, but either way he did tell Julie. It's not Brians fault that it was the truth. David was a bad, selfish friend. Brian was a patient one, but not perfect. The whole epiphany at the end was David realizing he caused his own tragedies and couldn't blame it on anyone else. That was his arc in the movie. David can't blame the board, Brian, Julie, Sofia, his father, or anyone else for his life. He had to realize his mistakes and move on.

    • @roleplayertheacting7213
      @roleplayertheacting7213 8 лет назад +14

      Oh please, you really believe Sofia only had the hots for David because he "stole" her? Even if David didn't hit on her, what kind of relationship would it have been for Brian if his girlfriend keeps lusting for his best friend?
      This doesn't justify Brian telling Julie and lying about it later.("I never talked to her" = lie) You can't control other people's emotions and play with them like Brian did and the only reason he was in the position to do that is because David trusted him..
      To me the epiphany was David realizing that the nightmare happened because he couldn't accept his new self ("Somebody died and it was me").\

In this movie, Cameron diaz play a hot and seductive character and Penelope Cruz acts as a compassionate and sweet character. The transformation between two main female characters look great. Great concept and unique movie.Insane movie but great.

    I love the whole scene but for some reason the parts where he's in bed touching his face feeling unsure about going in public with his new physical appearance that he feels is grotesque/scary and when he's walking into the crowd with the mask on the back of his head, they're my favorite parts.

    • @tuanjim799
      @tuanjim799 2 года назад +4

      That shot of him wading and spinning through the dark undulating crowd with his "two faces" (mask on backward) is one of the most subtly haunting images I've seen on film. Hard to put into words. So dreamy and strange and sad.

      @@tuanjim799 Agreed!

    • @waylonjones4365
      @waylonjones4365 Год назад +5

      @@tuanjim799 It actually is very ancient imagery. The double faced head, with both faces looking in opposite directions, is a symbol of Janus bifrons.
      It can have many different significations, but a rather important one is the time symbolism. According to this interpretation, one of Janus' face is looking at the past while the other is looking at the future.
      In that sense, you could say that David's disfigured face, the "front face", is the one facing what now seems to be a grim looking future, as he slowly realizes that his life will never be the same again, and nothing will come easy anymore.
      On the other side, the mask (the "back of his head's face") is looking at the past. It is a desperate attempt to artificially offset the somber future that he dreads, by seemingly "grafting" this prosthetic, fake face that symbolizes the old "intact" David, the old lifestyle that he lost, and that he so badly wants back, even though it will never return...
      That's the way I see it at least.
