I have 2003 corolla. I went to pep boys in 2007 and bought green coolant, which is for GM vehicle. Back then, i did not know the differences between different color of coolants. I mixed the green coolant in the pink coolant that toyota uses, and had been using the green until July of 2018, when I learned the differences between the different colors of coolant. I flushed coolant myself in July 2018, and used again genuine toyota coolant. There has been no damage in my engine. And the flushed coolant did not have any bad debris.
Those certain brands are universal because they are compatible with any color. On the other hand, you can't mix specific colors for example red and pink because the chemicals interact and cause damage to your engine

This makes sense only if you are going to use distilled water. If you use your tap water you are going to introduce contaminants that can cause acid or scale formation. Most of the water in the US does not meet specifications to mix a coolant 50/50. Most people won't take the time to mix with distilled water and they cause far more expensive failures just from the water they are using. Purchasing 50/50 makes is easy to have the correct concentration and contaminant free.
They make a very good point. Read the freaking label. Think about it. A company isn't going to put in print that it can be mixed with any other Anti-freeze/ coolant unless that was true. Otherwise the company would be liable. I've never heard of a coolant manufacturer being sued for misinformation and I've also never heard of anyone having coolant issues from mixing two or more types of coolant together. The real problems start when the cooling system is compromised with other issues such, bad thermostat, water pump, radiator, heater core, leaky hoses. Or, simply never checking coolant level or never doing a flush. Also, do not run pure concentrate antifreeze in your vehicle. Always mix it with water. Concentrate antifreeze in extreme cold temperatures gels and will not pump through the system. Generally a 50/50 mix is desired. However, for colder temperatures where you may want a higher freezing point, you may want to add a small amount of concentrate. Having said that, I have found that not to be necessary and I live where it was - 38c (or lower) at night for two weeks. It's not the end of the world if you mix antifreeze/coolant.
I've heard this too. (tis why I found this video) It's smart for Autozone's brand to just stick it right on the front like that, rather than the small print. And it's cool that you didn't just state facts, you emphasized that you're rebutting the common claims to the contrary.
Clearly there are types of coolant that are designed to be mixed, the ones we have are designed not to be mixed, soo the question is will you convince the wrong person to choose the wrong coolant to mix blindly

My 05 silverado uses dexcool. Checked it yesterday and it was a bit low. Had a unopened gallon of Peak coolant. Back says for use of all and mixes with all colors. So I used it and poured in 2 quarts. No big deal. People just need to read. Great video
You can mix it if it says universal, but it will not provide the corrosion protection for as long or as well as the original antifreeze. Why does Autozone sell all the other type antifreezes, why not just sell the universal and nothing else, so there is that.
You can technically mix any kind, however, there's a reason there are different types. Some are for corrosive inhibitors, like those with aluminum engine blocks as opposed to steel engine blocks. Coolants are also specialized to work with your vehicles gaskets, using a different coolant could adversely affect them. Finally, different coolants mixed together have the possibility of geling up and preventing a flow of fluid throughout your engine. Just go with what the engineer of your vehicle recommends, they are the ones who designed the engine they will tell you what kind of coolant to use.
@Ernie H Depends on how many miles are on it. I would check the owners manual and see what the metal the engine/cooling system is made of. Then check what kind of coolant your vehicle takes. Once you know that, you can pull up the technical date sheet on the coolant and see if it can be safely mixed with the regular green stuff. I would do a coolant flush if you've never done one, you are probably over 30k miles anyways.
I'm looking at the Chilton manual for my Tacoma and it specifically says "DO NOT MIX COOLANTS OF DIFFERENT COLORS, CAN CAUSE COOLING SYSTEM OR ENGINE DAMAGE"
Helpful video. However, i have Zerex by Valvoline G05 antifreeze. It does not say anywhere in the front or back about being able to mix with other color antifreeze. Should I still mix it with another antifreeze or nah?
I’m a technician and Ik for a fact that if u mix any color antifreeze and run it for a couple months those chemicals don’t work and create brown crud that blocks water jackets in the engine block and also stores that crud at the bottom of the radiator I’ve seen this in many vehicles specially when they mix pink with any other.

You're wrong. Yes, there are SOME that are universal but, there's proof that it's not the same stuff. It's not as good. Now in short term/economical situations yes, it will work. If we are talking "long life" correct coolant, it is better, it breaks down slower, it resists corrosion much better. Massive proof to me is in the dealership I work in. People that have kept the genuine, silicate & borate free have original hoses and all other accessories nearly 20 years and 200k miles + later most of the time. It's depends on the chemical make up of the antifreeze. It is best to stick with the original stuff and not go for the "universal" which has less corrosion inhibitors and breaks down more quickly. Cheapest/quickest way=cheaper/universal antifreeze. Longevity=use what the engineers say is best and follow the maintenance intervals.
What do you think, I've had to use about a gallon of the "universal" Prestone in my Porsche Boxster just after a water pump change. Did not flush but will do later in the year. Will I get build up if I wait a few months to do a full flush? BTW Porsche coolant. $50 per gallon, at least it's concentrate so you mix it. Thanks
There is a difference in antifreeze... old school green turns acidic an becomes electronically conductive an after 3-5 years accelerates corrosive properties. The gold, red, blue, orange are full synthetic coolant an do not need to be flushed till 100k or 10 years an do not contain the same corrosive chemicals as old school green glycerin formulation. Yes you could mix them in a pinch, BUT if you want to keep that cooling system an engine under factory warranty, or for over 300k stick with the color type that was originally in said cooling system, I've had to pull an entire cooling system out of a Super Duty 5.4l because of a nonbeliever mixing universal an old coolant in a fully synthetic system made for gold/red/orange.. with green the amount of sludge in that cooling system caused heater core, radiator, an water pump failure... next you'll be saying conventional oil is the same as fully synthetic..oil..
The green coolant is an inorganic additive technology (IAT). With this type of coolant, phosphates along with silicates are added to ethylene glycol. This helps to protect the metals that are in the vehicle’s cooling systems from becoming corroded. There are some IAT coolants that use propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol. The orange coolants are organic acid technologies (OAT). These were created for newer vehicles that had more nylon and aluminum parts in them. OAT coolants use organic acids in order to prevent corrosion. Some people believe that they can mix the two. This is a mistake and can lead to expensive repairs. The two coolants should never be mixed together as they do not react well. When mixed together they can form a thick, jelly-like substance that can completely stop all coolant flow which can lead to overheating. As the coolant stops flowing, other problems can occur as well such as happens with radiators, water jackets, and even heater cores. The water pump may overheat and stop working. In severe cases, head gaskets can blow, and heads may warp. The engine itself will encounter major damage.

My step dad added a cap full of orange coolant in my 2001 grand marquis i didnt relaize what he was doing until i turned around and saw that it was orange and stopped him just in time. What should i do? Bc i have no coolant at all. Except that cap size of orange coolant. I dont wanna mix the green. Its expensive to get it drained and etc. Idk what to do.
These guys don't know what they're talking about. Mixing coolant types lowers the life of the coolant. Which causes the shorter life of parts like water pumps, heater cores and radiators. Any decent technician knows this dude must be a parts store parking lot technician at best.
dI just mixed some Dex Cool orange to my Mercury Grand Marquis and then I noticed this warning after the fact on the top of the overflow tank. But the Dex Cool said that it was safe for Ford automobiles. So I quickly looked this up on RUclips. Thank you guys.

Should be ok. Mixes with any color on any make or model of any foreign or domestic car or light truck. I'm still very hesitant about mixing it with dex cool though 😂
I'd have to say. If it would damage the cooling system then these aftermarket coolant companies would be liable for damages under the warranty by law. Manufacturers recommend to use only OE coolants specified for your vehicle. But aftermarket coolants are proclaimed safe

Different coolants are designed for specific metals and components used in manufacturing of the engine. You can mix same formulations but Do Not mix a conventional with a extended life. If you mix it more than 20% You dilute the additives from both to a point you will not have protection from either. Color doesn’t mean squat it’s what additives are in the formulation and they don’t state which organic or inorganic inhibitors are present. Some manufacturers will void your warranty if you use a coolant that is not approved. It’s all about metallurgy and component materials! Read your operators manual and manufacture’s specifications. I have been testing coolant for over 50 years…yes I know what I am talking about

And added from the half line up to the full line of the reservoir with blue hoat Valvoline 50/50 engine coolant recommended pacifically for Asian vehicles and Hyundai is listed on the recommendation. I did this before I was aware of mechanic saying you're not supposed to mix. Can you please please please respond if I should have the entire system drained and flushed. Replacing it with the green oat coolant fluid. Or is it okay the car has less than less than 12,000 miles I have not driven it since I accidentally put different type in.
mixing coolant will not damage your engine but if you loosing coolant fast then you should check your cooling system , a boiling coolant reservoir radiator cap or air pockets in cooling system , thermostat not opening or stuck , fan clutch ,water pump,water hose crack leaks ect....
Don't mix coolant types unless you are in a pinch. There are clearly types that do not mix together. I know this first hand. So, to avoid gelling or other major problems, stick with the same type unless you're sure you know what you're doing.
Which coolants can't be mixed with other coolants? Prestone has been manufacturing coolant for 100 years... Prestone says you can mix their coolant with other coolants... Why would they say that?
Dealer coolant is different from the Universal stuff that most people buy, flush the cooling system and refill with whatever brand of universal coolant you choose (Prestone, Peak, Etc) and then you will never have any issues of a chemical reaction between formulations. BTW: Peak is made by the same company as Autozone and the Final Charge and many other private brands. Prestone and Zerex hide their manufacturer information on the SDS and claim it as their own product.
Alright guys so I have a question. My 2014 Cruze 1.8 requires 50/50 DexCool 50/50. I poured in straight anti freeze with the same brand DexCool. So my question is this since I want to change it can I just pour it in and mix it with the straight anti freeze or do I have to drain out the old( 100% anti freeze) and then pour in the new correct anti freeze (100% anti freeze)??
Its more important to pay attention to the base type and what ingredients should NOT be put into your particular brand and model vehicle. For instance my Honda CR-V uses non-borate and non-silicate anti freeze. My 08 RAV4 uses HOAT antifreeze (hybrid organic acid technology) . More important to know the type than focus on the color.
As long as the container says "can be mixed with any color", YES. your 1996 should already have the green antifreeze, which means you will not have any issues.

According to Petroleum Quality Institute of America, it is not recommended to put any antifreeze in a vehicle that is not recommended by the manufacturer. Also; Valvoline says on their website: "Mixing coolants of various types can have extensive and expensive consequences. As mentioned above, the mix can solidify, block your engine, and cause overheating, which can, in turn, cause the following problems: Degraded cylinder heads. Head gasket breakage.". my mums kia ceed 2008 has green in it i went to an auto shop told them it was green in the tank he gave me xstream g48 with a turquoise colour label but looks blue will this be ok to mix with the existing green?
I wish you would be correct, but I am having to clean out an utv cooling system the got the wrong anti freeze mix together. It caked up made an solid material in the water pump and and sheared of the plastic impeller of the water pump

I bought antifreeze from Autozone and it Plugged my Engine up I used the Universal Mix and it really messed my whole system up and I took Pictures.

You're wrong. Yes, there are SOME that are universal but, there's proof that it's not the same stuff. It's not as good. Now in short term/economical situations yes, it will work. If we are talking "long life" correct coolant, it is better, it breaks down slower, it resists corrosion much better. Massive proof to me is in the dealership I work in. People that have kept the genuine, silicate & borate free have original hoses and all other accessories nearly 20 years and 200k miles + later most of the time. It's depends on the chemical make up of the antifreeze. It is best to stick with the original stuff and not go for the "universal" which has less corrosion inhibitors and breaks down more quickly.
Cheapest/quickest way=cheaper/universal antifreeze.
Longevity=use what the engineers say is best and follow the maintenance intervals.
What do you think, I've had to use about a gallon of the "universal" Prestone in my Porsche Boxster just after a water pump change. Did not flush but will do later in the year. Will I get build up if I wait a few months to do a full flush? BTW Porsche coolant. $50 per gallon, at least it's concentrate so you mix it. Thanks
There is a difference in antifreeze... old school green turns acidic an becomes electronically conductive an after 3-5 years accelerates corrosive properties. The gold, red, blue, orange are full synthetic coolant an do not need to be flushed till 100k or 10 years an do not contain the same corrosive chemicals as old school green glycerin formulation. Yes you could mix them in a pinch, BUT if you want to keep that cooling system an engine under factory warranty, or for over 300k stick with the color type that was originally in said cooling system, I've had to pull an entire cooling system out of a Super Duty 5.4l because of a nonbeliever mixing universal an old coolant in a fully synthetic system made for gold/red/orange.. with green the amount of sludge in that cooling system caused heater core, radiator, an water pump failure... next you'll be saying conventional oil is the same as fully synthetic..oil..
The green coolant is an inorganic additive technology (IAT). With this type of coolant, phosphates along with silicates are added to ethylene glycol. This helps to protect the metals that are in the vehicle’s cooling systems from becoming corroded. There are some IAT coolants that use propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.
The orange coolants are organic acid technologies (OAT). These were created for newer vehicles that had more nylon and aluminum parts in them. OAT coolants use organic acids in order to prevent corrosion.
Some people believe that they can mix the two. This is a mistake and can lead to expensive repairs. The two coolants should never be mixed together as they do not react well. When mixed together they can form a thick, jelly-like substance that can completely stop all coolant flow which can lead to overheating. As the coolant stops flowing, other problems can occur as well such as happens with radiators, water jackets, and even heater cores. The water pump may overheat and stop working. In severe cases, head gaskets can blow, and heads may warp. The engine itself will encounter major damage.

My step dad added a cap full of orange coolant in my 2001 grand marquis i didnt relaize what he was doing until i turned around and saw that it was orange and stopped him just in time. What should i do? Bc i have no coolant at all. Except that cap size of orange coolant. I dont wanna mix the green. Its expensive to get it drained and etc. Idk what to do.

These guys don't know what they're talking about. Mixing coolant types lowers the life of the coolant. Which causes the shorter life of parts like water pumps, heater cores and radiators. Any decent technician knows this dude must be a parts store parking lot technician at best.

dI just mixed some Dex Cool orange to my Mercury Grand Marquis and then I noticed this warning after the fact on the top of the overflow tank. But the Dex Cool said that it was safe for Ford automobiles. So I quickly looked this up on RUclips. Thank you guys.

I'd have to say. If it would damage the cooling system then these aftermarket coolant companies would be liable for damages under the warranty by law. Manufacturers recommend to use only OE coolants specified for your vehicle. But aftermarket coolants are proclaimed safe

Wrong coolant...
Different coolants are designed for specific metals and components used in manufacturing of the engine. You can mix same formulations but Do Not mix a conventional with a extended life. If you mix it more than 20% You dilute the additives from both to a point you will not have protection from either. Color doesn’t mean squat it’s what additives are in the formulation and they don’t state which organic or inorganic inhibitors are present. Some manufacturers will void your warranty if you use a coolant that is not approved. It’s all about metallurgy and component materials! Read your operators manual and manufacture’s specifications. I have been testing coolant for over 50 years…yes I know what I am talking about
Thank you very much for your comment and I appreciate your experience. I have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra and it had green oat engine coolant. And added from the half line up to the full line of the reservoir with blue hoat Valvoline 50/50 engine coolant recommended pacifically for Asian vehicles and Hyundai is listed on the recommendation. I did this before I was aware of mechanic saying you're not supposed to mix. Can you please please please respond if I should have the entire system drained and flushed. Replacing it with the green oat coolant fluid. Or is it okay the car has less than less than 12,000 miles I have not driven it since I accidentally put different type in.

mixing coolant will not damage your engine but
if you loosing coolant fast then you should check your cooling system , a boiling coolant reservoir
radiator cap or air pockets in cooling system , thermostat not opening or stuck ,
fan clutch ,water pump,water hose crack leaks ect....

Don't mix coolant types unless you are in a pinch. There are clearly types that do not mix together. I know this first hand. So, to avoid gelling or other major problems, stick with the same type unless you're sure you know what you're doing.
Which coolants can't be mixed with other coolants? Prestone has been manufacturing coolant for 100 years... Prestone says you can mix their coolant with other coolants... Why would they say that?
Dealer coolant is different from the Universal stuff that most people buy, flush the cooling system and refill with whatever brand of universal coolant you choose (Prestone, Peak, Etc) and then you will never have any issues of a chemical reaction between formulations. BTW: Peak is made by the same company as Autozone and the Final Charge and many other private brands. Prestone and Zerex hide their manufacturer information on the SDS and claim it as their own product.
Prestone and Zerex are coolant manufacturers. Actually Zerex is the brand name of coolant for Valvoline.
Alright guys so I have a question. My 2014 Cruze 1.8 requires 50/50 DexCool 50/50. I poured in straight anti freeze with the same brand DexCool. So my question is this since I want to change it can I just pour it in and mix it with the straight anti freeze or do I have to drain out the old( 100% anti freeze) and then pour in the new correct anti freeze (100% anti freeze)??

Its more important to pay attention to the base type and what ingredients should NOT be put into your particular brand and model vehicle. For instance my Honda CR-V uses non-borate and non-silicate anti freeze. My 08 RAV4 uses HOAT antifreeze (hybrid organic acid technology) . More important to know the type than focus on the color.

As long as the container says "can be mixed with any color", YES. your 1996 should already have the green antifreeze, which means you will not have any issues.

Use water in an emergency. As long as it's not below 30 and you're leaving your car out you'll be fine.

Really enjoyed the Video guys and I see that it has generated tons of views and likes including mine so congrats on that , BUT, I don't think that it is actually good advice for folks who are not very car savvy. According to Petroleum Quality Institute of America, it is not recommended to put any antifreeze in a vehicle that is not recommended by the manufacturer. Also; Valvoline says on their website: "Mixing coolants of various types can have extensive and expensive consequences. As mentioned above, the mix can solidify, block your engine, and cause overheating, which can, in turn, cause the following problems: Degraded cylinder heads. Head gasket breakage.". We're not saying you can just mix together any antifreeze. This is about using universal antifreeze.
