- In 1972, Shirley Chisholm ran for president of the United States of America as a Democrat. She didn't win, but this was not the beginning or the end of her career in politics. She held a congressional seat in the New York delegation for decades, and Shirley was a pioneer on many fronts. Today we'll learn about her life, her career, and her legacy.

I am a pretty much white Ukrainian and I don't even live in the US, but I love this series so much. I've got American studies in my uni, so the CrashCourse episodes broaden my knowledge on the topic.
I respect you all guys so much. Even though you are talking about Black Americans, it is the sort of knowledge that would be useful to anyone: how one fights for their rights, how one doesn't give up and how one is proud of their heritage.
Thank you so much for this brilliant piece of education. I love it so much!
This is incredible, I can’t believe we didn’t learn about her in school. What an inspiring person.
This series is is what should be taught in schools! i recommend this to everyone! i’ve learned so much!
I’m a sophomore in college and have never heard of this woman. I stumbled upon it because the algorithm knows I’m in history class but I still probably won’t ever learn about this woman in books. Thank you for the video I’m all for the girls!!!!
I have never heard of this extraordinary woman. Amazing. Thanks for dedicating an episode about her!
Crash course's black American history has inspired me to research other nations' histories. it would be helpful and wonderful if crash course one day covered Chinese and indigenous histories too because they've experienced much conflict as well.
A series on native american history would be really intresting. Espacially since you seldom hear their perspective.
Shirley Chisholm was a political heroine of America!
This crash course gives me hope for the future of humanity.
It shows that even with all the setbacks, financial crises, supreme court decisions, etc. if people keep on fighting and given enough time change for the better is possible and will happen.
Looking forward to see the first black woman in the oval office.
Thank you for the amazing lesson! In the show Mrs. America, Uzo Aduba protrayed Shirley Chisholm, but her part was brief, and I wish they had shown more of her.
Crash Course, you all are doing some outstanding work. Thank you!!
I love this series. Clint is a great teacher/lecturer.
Fun fact she won the New Jersey primary. Let’s go Jersey!
I love this channel.
What an inspiration
As I watched this I actually drove past the state park that bares her name
To this day, I still think it is weird to have negative feelings towards someone because his skin has another color
Thanks Dr. Smith!
American schools: *don't give Black Americans any attention outside of slavery and segregation, thus implying that they had nothing to contribute to our greater history, culture, tech, and progress*
This channel: *exists*
As a graduate student at the University of Texas, I was doing research in Exercise Physiology. One of the people involved in the research was a middle distance/cross country runner who went on to graduate studies at Columbia University. She became a documentarian. Shola Lynch went on to produce and direct Chisholm 72, Unbought Unbossed. A fantastic documentary.
We love us some Shirley!! Thank you for sharing such an important part of black history, women’s history, _American_ history.
I was honored to work on Vice-President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and I love that her campaign design was inspired by Congresswoman Chisolm and her presidential run. For the People! 👏🏽👏🏽
So cool!!!
I see a crash course Black American History video, I upvote
Thank you for this episode. I will read her autobiography.
0:20 This man's delivery is perfect
I'm not black and I don't live in USA (which you call America, erasing all other countries), but still I love these videos and get inspired bye them. Love the tone and everything in them.
Yep the Schools/Media don't often point out the positive truth. There have been alot of great scientists, medical scientists, and specialists that have contributed to the USA. Thomas Sowell points out alot of good ideas alot of people don't want to hear. Good to hear a few sides of the story.
Year I graduated high school. 50 years ago.
Amazing
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️One of my all time favorite people in history.
Please do a Crash Course Black American History on Nichelle Nichols.
I love learning all these new details. I look forward to reading your book recommendation.
🖤🖤🖤
Strong, Independent Black Women. Truly unbossed in their own unique way.
Crash Course Music Theory?
right?! and art!!
And if you haven't seen Stevie Wonder's performance of Superstition on Sesame Street from 1972 I highly suggest you look it up it is a masterpiece.
Gonna be sad when this series ends hopefully they cover all the recent racism in the USA before then.
Thank you for keeping this up. Important work.
Can you add this to your Black History playlist? I have it bookmarked to check for updates and just happened to find this one came out.
added!

Democrats: “We had the first WOC to run in a primary!”
Also Democrats: “Lets invent superdelegates so that this doesn’t happen again.”
Lbgtq and black communities are completely separate.
